I am a Type2 diabetic and I am taking huge doses of fast acting insulin and Lantus a day however my levels are still off the scale 30 and no reading, the lowest I can get down too is between fifteen and twenty, I have been told I am insulin Resistant and was put forward for an insulin pump, after a number of years and a change of Specialist I have been told I cannot have a pump because of the nice guidlines (I am not type1) I now have damage to my feet and digestive system and getting worse has anyone any ideas of what I can do now, I have been put onto all sorts of tablets insulin doses all of which have failed. I am getting nowhere with my diabetic center

Thanks SarahQ,

I try to stick to 110 - 120 grams of carbohydrate per day some times much less as the complications from the result of my problem mean I have to starve myself for two or three days before I can get out too any appointments.

I have to be very carefully as most days I am taking 100 units or more of fast acting insulin and 70 of Lantus and this with only a sandwich and evening meal.

I havent tried U500 but I will tell my diabetic nurse next week when I go for my check up.

Also I didnt know I could apply for funding from the DLA, how would I do that?

I must admit I am getting rather low after years of this and keep getting told the same things I already know from differant specialist every time.

U500 which I take is more for convenience than anything else.
You're not alone in being insulin resistant. I've not had an hba1c below 14 for over 18 months and that's despite taking over 1500 units a day. Luckily with the u500 I only have to use 300 units.
Type 2's have been given pumps if they fill the criteria. It might be worth getting in touch with John Davis of INPUT for advice.
You're not alone with your resistance.
If you need any advice about how I cope send me a pm.
I'm lucky that I have a friend who's always there when I need a moan cos she knows exactly where I'm coming from. We all need someone who understands

Fuggsy,

Thank you I am in despair the Diabetic unit I attend only seem interested in putting the amount I take down all the time which dosent do anything as well as changing tablets to make me absorb insulin all of which I have gone through before, I am still in the same place but with more damage after three years, the last straw was seeing a new specialist who said that after reading my file she had to tell me I was insulin resistant and to take tablets again. this is all after telling me I could have a pump three years ago, what do you have to do now I cant work becuase of Neuropathy I can just make it to the garden on some days as I can keep nothing in my stomach and attacks last days, weeks.

Sorry to moan thank you keep smiling it confuses them :?

I've always wished I could give my dsn - you can guess what it stands for in this house lol, for 24 hours so they actually know how awful it makes you feel.
I was told not to drink after 7pm so I didn't spend all night on the loo. A really practical solution when you've got a raging thirst and someone's nicked your saliva.
I've been down the not eating root and it doesn't help so try to eat, even if it's just a slice of toast.
Have you been offered byetta? It made no diff to my bg and made me feel violently ill and I put on weight lol. It may be worth asking about though as many people seem to get benefit from it.
I know the neuropathy is a pain in the rear. I'd love to feel my feet. I take thiamine which has helped. I've had a 50% improvement since I started taking it. Have also found that changing to soya milk has helped my bg go down a bit, so it's worth considering even though it tastes vile lol.
One other thing. You are perfectly entitled to ask for a referral to another diabetic centre. However, I wouldn't recommend the centre I go to pmsl

Fuggsy,

I do wonder if these people really understand sometimes they talk to me as if it is my fault the last time I had my results card waved in my face with comments of "WHATS THIS, WHATS THIS!"

It helps to know I am not alone out in the wide world.

Thanks again.

It's ALWAYS our fault lol. Am sure my dsn feels that I'm wrong in having the audacity to breathe!
I know what it's like to feel that you're the only person going through it, but, and I know it's not much consolation, you're not.
I've had every test known to man done. They could attach all the scans I've had done and completely reconstruct my body lol. And all they discovered was that I have a problem with digestion.
I've always tried to maintain a sense of humour when I go to clinic, but am wondering if perhaps they would do more if I went in sobbing about being unable to cope. Recently I was found to have a bg of 45.3 and they sent me home with their comment of if it was anyone but you we'd be worried ringing in my ears. My OH was close to hitting them that day!
Have you been admitted and put on a sliding scale? It might be worth trying. If they hook you up for long enuf it might give your pancreas enuf of a rest that, for want of a better word, it reboots itself and brings your bg down.
Before you next go to clinic, make a list of things you want to say and insist on some answers. They will be less able to blind you with science and change the subject if you know exactly what you want to ask.
I'm quite happy to let you know what they've done to me to try and get my bg down if it helps. You never know, you might be lucky and something might work for you xxx

Fuggsy,

I know what you mean but as you say it's good to keep a sense of humour about things if we can, the writing things down is a good idea I'll try that.

It might help if you would let me know if anything is helping you at least I can put some things forward.

Kind regards
