Hi Daniel, my mother got a rare form of cancer 13 years ago which West Indian people don't usually get (normally Orientals), my brothers and I were tested for the gene and were clear. Chemo did not work and she was getting thinner and thinner (dying), she then had a clinical trial and is one of the longest lived. The medics wanted to continually draw her blood to try to put together what saved her, no doubt you have the same level of interest.
Hi there, this is definitely on a similar level, very interesting infact! How is she now, if you don't mind me asking? Dan

Hi, Jayden, there's no confirmed name for the gene as of yet, but it has generated dormant cells which have layed in my pancreas for this time to be recharged, therefore my pancreas to be working again, doctors have combined this with my long distance running, sending my organ into a "shock". It's a ongoing progress , and all looks good

That’s fab! Congratulations

Hi my name is Daniel Darkes, I'm here to support, and answer any questions, and to give my best knowledge and advise on my type 1 diabetes cure, at this stage

Hi Daniel, welcome to the forum. What a great story. As you will know your story has and will generate great interest. Even type IIs who will have varying degrees of insulin resistance will have a pancreas that might be producing adequate amounts of insulin, but might find that their insulin producing beta cells are decreasing in number. I hope that all the facts will become known and maybe something can be done to help all type Is and maybe type IIs.

Hi Daniel - good to see you on here. When I read your story in the press I had questions and nowhere to ask them - so here we go!!

- did they run antibody tests on you when you were initially diagnosed? Could you share the results?
- did they ever do a glucose tolerance tests to see what your c-peptide levels were? My pancreas was unscientifically described as 'sluggish' after that test. 90 mins in it decided to join the party, but not well enough to keep me off insulin.

I agree that exercise is key to keeping BG levels down. The medics say the level of exercise I was doing when I was diagnosed last year probably saved my life as I was literally burning the sugar off.

Very, very interested to hear your story!

Hi there, yes I had all tests that indicated me to being type 1, my C-PEPTIDE showed very low levels of insulin, especially at the first stages of diagnosis, also antibodies in my blood attacking cells , other tests were fasting glucose & A1cs

Hi Daniel,

First congratulations to you, wish you all the best. So this will seem like a stupid question, but I'm not a scientist so forgive me if it's blunt and lacking of correct terminology. Do you think that really your body could have adapted to a 'survival factory setting' under the regime of exercise you were doing and carb control? I mean I do not know you but you obviously are one of the fittest diabetic people I have read about. I'm trying to see if it's more of a body adaption to shock/ survival than some rare gene. Btw they could have at least named the rare gene after you X) Once again all the best.

Hello Dan!
Your case is very inspiring and fascinating. I am incredibly happy for you!
I was wondering what your diet consisted of. Was it low carb? Calorie controlled?
Aside from running 15 to 30 miles a few times per week, did you do any other type of exercise?
Best of luck!

Hi, could be one theory, I do alot of running it's my passion, I think the doctors and consultants have found this gene, in which recharged my immune system, with long distance running shocking my body, carb wise if I'm not running a long distance I will lower my carbs abit, sometimes on short distances I won't eat carbs just protein, and salads, fruit. Maybe when they finalize and conclude my results, the gene will have a name

Hi there, so my diet in general is consisted of protein, fruit, veg, I eat fish, chicken with veg in evenings, or the day before I train il add rice, pasta , or sweet potatoes, breakfast is usually cereal and fruit , or if I have a long distance run, porridge, lunch would be a small range I fruit or nuts, crackers , so bit of both really, I'm gonna burn it off either way, I balance it depending

That's quite spectacular. However, I'm a bit confused by this. My understanding is that type 1 diabetes occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks and kills the beta cells of the pancreas. If your beta cells were dead, did your pancreas grow new ones? Or were they not actually dead and somehow started to function again?

Also, have they identified the gene? And have they looked for it in other people?

Thanks.
I agree , does your claimed

I agree. What is the rare Gene that you claim can cure diabetes. ? Type 1 (or significantly improve it) ... it's a hell of a claim that millions of us want to know more about and find out how we can access it. I'm Type 1 and have been for over 25 years. Recently under my own research and insistence, I had my Dr. prescribe Metaformin to enable me to test whether it assisted with my Insulin management and reduction - sure as hell did! I take less than 10 units a day now of fast acting (down from 20 to 24) and 24 of Lantus slow acting down from 30 to 36 - inside 14 days. Blood sugars always under 8 in the morrning now. I am also sticking as close as poss to low carb diet. But all of this has been self supported not professionals as access to them is severely limited (my Drs surgery has zero diabetes specialists!) and have been point blank unhelpful and un-supportive of experimentation. So I am so keen to follow this expert and learn more and I don't want any false hope proferred or unsubstantiated claims - it simply would not be humane to do so.

Hi there, so related to the gene, it's still ongoing on what it will be named and what it consists of, all I know is at present it's acted as a back up amune system recharging cells which have layed dormant in my pancreas for this time, enabling me not to inject insulin, all diet and carbs have been myself on how I do it, with all my excercise and running helping out with it.
I'm doing a interview with diabetes.co.uk next week

Hi @Daniel Darkes. Welcome to the forum.
How long had you been diagnosed type 1 until they discovered this rare gene?
After 46 year as type 1 I think my auto immune system has totally wiped my beta cells from my pancreas and doubt my pancreas would know what to do with them if they returned!!
If I was you I would keep out of the big pharmaceuticals sight as they would loose billions of pounds if you are the start of the "cure" for type 1 diabetes ;)

Hi Daniel!

Very interesting case! This christmas It will be 4 years since I got diagnosed as a type 1! Just like you I have had low c-peptide and strongly positive for GAD, ICA and IA-2. Thus far I have managed my diabetes with low carb and by this method I have normal HBA1c about 5% and this way my c-peptide had actually increased a little bit last time I got checked (still in bottom range in normal values) but still have all antibodies remaining as expected...
Her is my question to you. In order for you to be cured then all your antibodies most be gone now? Did they check you for all type 1 antibodies and got them confirmed negative?

Hi , thankyou, I was type 1 diabetic for 7 years prior to this gene being found, for me I hope this is the start of a break through!

Hi, yes I had all type 1 checks, to diagnose me a type 1 diabetic, all antibodies came back negative all low levels of C-PEPTIDE aswell

Ok, is your c-peptide level still low ? my c-peptide level was 0.16nmol/L and normal range is 0.13-0.87 in this Lab. I am very interested in knowing what your c-peptide is today?

I wouldn't be able to give you a accurate reading today, as I'm not in clinic for a few more weeks yet, going off my last reading which was 0.97(NG/ML) depending how your GP expresses the result
