Who else is out here Tryna **** up t1 by eating nuts, seeds, heavy protein food and low carbs? I encourage everybody to try this type of diet because your health care professional is lying when they say eat anything u want, that’s why we feel like **** 30 mins after eating that pasta, cereal, yogurt, chips or even a lot of fruit(did that this morning, objected by still by blood was 16 2 hours later), I want to live At my best version and diabetes has been getting harder and harder aka most days I feel like ass for half of it because I’m either trying to fix the issue which caused a nother bad blood sugar or I’m waiting for the insulin to work, so I’m bout ending this non sense and live properly. I believe the key to this is exercise meditation and low carb high fat meals anyone else **** w that idea

Hazedsoundz - I'm not T1, so I'm fortunate enough not to have to juggle insulin into my day to day life. You do sound incredibly frustrated by it all.

Are you looking for other T1 low carbers, or something else?

I agree low carb is good, but it is possible to eat a more varied diet without terrible numbers. The problem with the medical establishment is not that they tell people they can eat whatever they want, but that they don't really give people the tools to understand how to dose for different foods. It's not easy but there are dosing strategies using a CGM and regular insulin to cover slow-digesting carbs if on MDI that are far more effective than just dosing rapid-acting insulin according to fixed ratios and testing 2 hours later .

I’ve been a t2 since 1989. BS was over 70 when diagnosed.
Been through several ups and downs and very poor decisions on diet and advice from professionals

My poor control has given me a lot of related complications. It is a struggle but no impossible to have somewhat of a normal life
I have went low carb for about 7 months. Slowly worked my way to it at the caution by all professionals I deal with
A1c I improved, daily living is good. Lost some weight and generally feeling good. I also reduced my insulin daily by over 28 and still will be able to reduce more
I currently am on 48 carbs daily and plan to work my way to 30 (dr Bernstein’s diabetes diet) so far what he has preached in his books has done some good for me

I think there is a good in between and the occasional oh for goodness sake go mad for a day! The more we stress about it the more effect on levels anyway. As I’ve said before there are so many other factors which affect levels, and are out of our control, which we have to react to.
From a personal point of view I have found very low carbing not good for my mental health. Making me feel depressed and bitter. It also didn’t give me the results that made the effort worthwhile. 70-100 carbs gives me a better balance.
If socialising or on holiday, I do my best but don’t beat myself up if I overindulge. Just test test and inject. Have just about given up potatoes, rice, pasta and bread and have found that as time has gone on I prefer my alternatives. However, giving up fruit is non debatable for me. I will always turn to fruit when on the low side. Or eat it as part of my meal.

That’s smart asf, but what do u eat? I’ve been t1 since 2015
Fish, eggs, tofu, above ground veg, avocado, olives, goat and sheep cheese & butter (I’m allergic to mammal and bird meat as well as cow dairy, thanks to my idiot immune system), nuts - no processed stuff apart from the odd bit of quorn. Occasionally vegan protein shakes if I’m super low on protein. I write about my food in my blog and FB page, the links are in my sig :)

Whilst there are many people on this forum who follow a low carb diet, it is not necessary for all.
I do not feel **** after eating pasta, cereal, yogurt, chips or even a lot of fruit ... and I am not lying.

One of the wonderful things about humanity is that we are all different and all react differently to different foods, situations, etc.
It is wonderful that you have found something that works for you and avoids you feeling ****. But, please, do not assume it is the same for everyone.

Absolutely. Different things work for us all in different ways. I always felt really sleepy after carby food, even before T1. It’s mostly T2s that advocate low carb, but I gave it a go after I mistakenly took a massive insulin overdose after I mistook the raw and cooked weights on a pack of spaghetti. Terrified me witless, had to call an ambulance. I’ve found it works for me, but many T1s happily eat carbs, time their insulin just right, and that’s cool too. I was never able to get that right (and I’m good with numbers), so it's just easier for me not to bother with them.

Hey

I'm curious what you eat as alternatives to rice pasta potatoes and bread? I'm currently eating a lot smaller amounts of brown rice and potatoes mostly avoiding sliced bread and have seen an improvement in control. Any other tips would be helpful

Personally I wouldn't survive on a low carb diet. I LURVE my carbs. BUT I also inject a fair bit of insulin to cover them. As has been said, we are all different and what works for one definitely won't work for the other. Good luck with your low carb quest :)

After diagnosis I always ate brown rice and pasta and limited potatoes. After much poo pooing and derision thought I would give cauliflower rice and courgetti spaghetti a go. I fell in love with both. I know it sounds bonkers but they are now a preference.
Today’s lunch was baked haddock, courgetti spaghetti and cauliflower rice all mixed up. With some broccoli and peas. Yum! Made mash for hubby and grandson. Finished with stewed apples fresh from the tree with homemade custard minus any form of sweetener. Just a sprinkle of cinnamon. I always finish with a handful of nuts and a piece of 90% dark chocolate. I totalled it up as 40 carbs. With the 10 I had for brekkie and the fact I will likely not eat again before tomorrow not a bad day.
I also make my own whole meal bread. I absolutely do not eat commercial bread, in any shape or form. They put all sorts in it. I find I need a lot less insulin for my own bread. However, I used to make a loaf a week and freeze it ready sliced. I have now cut back to once every 3 weeks.
They do say pre cooking pasta and then reheating, lowers the effect on sugar levels. And I do believe wholewheat versions to be better. Not because they don’t turn into sugar eventually, but the word is eventually. The rise is a lot slower.
All this said, as a type 1 we do not have to give up all carbs. Just moderate them to aid us in our day to day management.

Hi @hazedsoundz I'm Type 2 so can't comment on whether lchf is good for T1s, but some of the T1s on here do find it helps.
But I just thought I'd welcome you to the forum. :)

I have tried low carbing most days for past few months and found it to be relatively easy to do. Brekkie is now around 30g of carb, greek yogurt and fruit or museli. lunch around 30 g of carbs and dinner around 30/40 g of carbs. previously I was taking around 250g of carbs a day.

Main thing I cut out was bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. Now eating lots more veg instead of potatoes and rice.

I have tried cauliflower rice but OMG its is worse than horrible, yet I love cauliflower and it is one of my main veggies that I now eat. What is courgette spaghetti

Have you tried really upping the seasoning for your cauli rice? If I'm doing it with a curry, I'll use Pilau sasoning, of if I'm doing s Pretendy Paella, then,........... you guessed it; I use Paella seasoning.

Not tried that, may give it a go. I have tried doing it as a stir fry, with onions, peppers mushrooms and black pepper but the smell and taste was vile. As i said that was surprising as cauli is one of my fav vegetables, either steamed, boiled or roasted

As a confirmed eater of complex carbohydrates, I can recommend cooking cooling and reheating brown basmati rice and whole-wheat pasta, I could see the difference just on finger sticks years back, but then low carb isn't for me.

Not all carbs are equal is what I've learned from 35 years experimentation :)
