I dislike like the term 'Low Carb' because what is actually classed as low carb ? as it varies for so many  I personally only have a tiny amount of carbs for breakfast, but even with just protein, scramble egg and a piece of bacon, it's 1 to 1 1/2 units of Insulin, which is more than for an Irish Yogurt or a small piece of fruit !
I like the term - Reduced Carbs :D

Not tried that, may give it a go. I have tried doing it as a stir fry, with onions, peppers mushrooms and black pepper but the smell and taste was vile. As i said that was surprising as cauli is one of my fav vegetables, either steamed, boiled or roasted

I always cook mine in the wok, over a high heat. Often I might dry fry it (in a hard anodised wok), or use some oil. Chilli oil is rather fab for it, and my (home meade) chilli oil is err,............ fiery!

I have tried low carbing most days for past few months and found it to be relatively easy to do. Brekkie is now around 30g of carb, greek yogurt and fruit or museli. lunch around 30 g of carbs and dinner around 30/40 g of carbs. previously I was taking around 250g of carbs a day.

Main thing I cut out was bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. Now eating lots more veg instead of potatoes and rice.

I have tried cauliflower rice but OMG its is worse than horrible, yet I love cauliflower and it is one of my main veggies that I now eat. What is courgette spaghetti

Courgette spaghetti is long strands of............... Courgette :D but I am not a lover of this veg, even with seasoning. I have had cauliflower rice, it was just passable and I like cauliflower a lot, also roasted in the oven is very tasty.

:) Chilli goes with everything :) black pepper too, I've a ghost pepper plant on the windowsill with 11 chillies ripening :p and they're quite fun.

Have you tried frying the cauliflower in coconut oil. About a teaspoon. The courgetti is spiralised and lightly fried.

It’s a minefield isn’t it. I know a lot of type 1s that eat very few carbs do so to avoid swings in sugar levels and the risks of going too low with too much insulin. Others on this forum think that the more insulin you take the more insulin resistant you become. Interestingly, I have found, that if I eat a moderate amount of carbs with my meal I ultimately need less insulin than if I eat none. And my Libre line (when I could wear one before the dreaded allergy) was flatter and more predictable.
At the end of the day we are individual. Our diabetes belongs to us and it is up to us to manage it to the best of our ability. It’s a daily struggle and we all need a pat on the back.

Hi, yes it is a mine field and I have seen posts from a well known type 1 member who is on reduced carbs, 30 I think and they still have swings. Diabetes and all that it entails, with decades of Insulin injections and finger pricks is a huge pain in the derrière at times .Sometimes I am so chuffed with the good stable readings, especially when the hospital changed me over to Tresiba and other times, I want to scream at my meter and throw it out the window lol
I don't have a Libre, but hoping to discuss getting one when I see my diabetes specialist on the 22nd.
Take care

I roast my cauli rice - melt some coconut oil in a metal oven tin, toss the “rice” in the melted oil with lots of salt and pepper, and roast at 180 for about 20 minutes, stir and give it another ten. Gives it a really lovely nutty flavour, and most importantly for me, drives off a lot of the moisture. Makes an awesome egg fried rice :)

After diagnosis I always ate brown rice and pasta and limited potatoes. After much poo pooing and derision thought I would give cauliflower rice and courgetti spaghetti a go. I fell in love with both. I know it sounds bonkers but they are now a preference.
Today’s lunch was baked haddock, courgetti spaghetti and cauliflower rice all mixed up. With some broccoli and peas. Yum! Made mash for hubby and grandson. Finished with stewed apples fresh from the tree with homemade custard minus any form of sweetener. Just a sprinkle of cinnamon. I always finish with a handful of nuts and a piece of 90% dark chocolate. I totalled it up as 40 carbs. With the 10 I had for brekkie and the fact I will likely not eat again before tomorrow not a bad day.
I also make my own whole meal bread. I absolutely do not eat commercial bread, in any shape or form. They put all sorts in it. I find I need a lot less insulin for my own bread. However, I used to make a loaf a week and freeze it ready sliced. I have now cut back to once every 3 weeks.
They do say pre cooking pasta and then reheating, lowers the effect on sugar levels. And I do believe wholewheat versions to be better. Not because they don’t turn into sugar eventually, but the word is eventually. The rise is a lot slower.
All this said, as a type 1 we do not have to give up all carbs. Just moderate them to aid us in our day to day management.
Cauliflower rice, broccoli rice and celeriac rice are much tastier than normal rice. I couldn't go back to that bloated feeling after eating rice.

@Dodo have tried celeriac chips which I love. But never celeriac rice. Will have to give it a go.

I gather it's out of season at the moment. More likely to get it in the autumn and winter months, but the only supermarket I have found it in is Waitrose. It's my particular favourite as it doesn't go mushy which some cauliflower and broccoli rice can.

Absolutely. Different things work for us all in different ways. I always felt really sleepy after carby food, even before T1. It’s mostly T2s that advocate low carb, but I gave it a go after I mistakenly took a massive insulin overdose after I mistook the raw and cooked weights on a pack of spaghetti. Terrified me witless, had to call an ambulance. I’ve found it works for me, but many T1s happily eat carbs, time their insulin just right, and that’s cool too. I was never able to get that right (and I’m good with numbers), so it's just easier for me not to bother with them.

Exactly! I feel the same way I guess there might be too many factors that effect my sugars personally, it’s different for everyone though

I get mine in Morrisons.

I think there is a good in between and the occasional oh for goodness sake go mad for a day! The more we stress about it the more effect on levels anyway. As I’ve said before there are so many other factors which affect levels, and are out of our control, which we have to react to.
From a personal point of view I have found very low carbing not good for my mental health. Making me feel depressed and bitter. It also didn’t give me the results that made the effort worthwhile. 70-100 carbs gives me a better balance.
If socialising or on holiday, I do my best but don’t beat myself up if I overindulge. Just test test and inject. Have just about given up potatoes, rice, pasta and bread and have found that as time has gone on I prefer my alternatives. However, giving up fruit is non debatable for me. I will always turn to fruit when on the low side. Or eat it as part of my meal.

I find 80 to 100 works for me too, the DR doesn't want me to goo any lower and that suits me too, lower just didn't work for me. Like you I can't live without fruit. I just tried all sorts with loads of finger pricking to see what suits my body. I know an apple will send me sky high, melon has been my saviour. Unfortunately as with most things the fruit my body likes is expensive

Who else is out here Tryna **** up t1 by eating nuts, seeds, heavy protein food and low carbs? I encourage everybody to try this type of diet because your health care professional is lying when they say eat anything u want, that’s why we feel like **** 30 mins after eating that pasta, cereal, yogurt, chips or even a lot of fruit(did that this morning, objected by still by blood was 16 2 hours later), I want to live At my best version and diabetes has been getting harder and harder aka most days I feel like ass for half of it because I’m either trying to fix the issue which caused a nother bad blood sugar or I’m waiting for the insulin to work, so I’m bout ending this non sense and live properly. I believe the key to this is exercise meditation and low carb high fat meals anyone else **** w that idea
Does the NHS offer Dafne courses in your area it has really helped me to balance my insulin with exercise and life in general. As it says on the Dafne course your quick acting insulin works over 4 to 5 hours. Your 2 hour measurement will be around the peak of it working. This holds true for myself I use NovoRapid by injecting not pump.
