Hi all,

I’ve been having lower back pain for about eight weeks now. I’m on atorvastatin and I hear this could
be a symptom. At first I thought it may be sciatica as I get a shooting pain down my left leg.

It feels like a deep pain that radiates down and throbs, reading online its saying could be kidney related. So I’ve basically worked myself up to think it’s my liver or kidneys. My urine is clear and I don’t really have any other side effects.

I do love a beer and I probably do drink too much.

If I press down on my left rib it also hurts but apart from that is just lower flank pain. I’m sure it could be the tablets.

I’m just very worried. I have my diabetic check up next week and am well controlled.

Any ideas or tips would be great.

I’m 36 and male

Thanks

Best to see your GP. As useful as Google is, it can easily lead us down a path that just frightens us to death, best to see the GP. I could tell you what my lower back pain was but that would only show you one of many causes. For me it was muscular spasms. Plus I also had sciatica.

I’m on atorvastatin and I hear this could be a symptom.

You might like to review your statin situation after you've sorted out the lower back pain. I took statins for 17 years, I stopped 4 years ago because my low carb diet helped my total cholesterol drop like a stone. The leg pain I experienced was different to the sciatica pain.

My urine is clear and I don’t really have any other side effects.

That could mean you are well hydrated.

If I press down on my left rib it also hurts but apart from that is just lower flank pain.

You know what your doctor will say? Don't press down on your left rib.

So, it really goes back to my first statement, best to see your GP. One thing you might like to do is exactly what you have done here, write it all down, it saves time and makes sure that you tell your GP everything that's on your mind. I was always forgetting stuff and if you're trying to stick to ten minutes, having all the facts written down is a great help. I just hand my notes over and the GP will even get them scanned to go straight into my notes.

All the best.

Kidney stone springs to mind. Although you often get microscopic blood in your urine with a stone but urinalysis will identify that

Hi, you really need to make an appointment to see your GP and then, if need be, you will be referred to a specialist. It may not be diabetes related ( the kidneys) but it's best to find out sooner than later.
Take care.
