Hi all,

I was diagnosed 2 weeks ago with type 1. When discharged from hospital (which was a terrible experience for many reasons) I wasn't given any means to test my blood sugar, but was out on 4,6,6 Novorapid and 10 night time Lantus. I saw my GP three days later who was horrified that I was on insulin with no means to test. Is it worth making a complaint about this?

Yes I think it is worth putting in a complaint. You could easily have ended up back in hospital and they need to review their procedures so it doesn't happen again. All the best.

Stupid people
Was you seen by a diabetes consultant or given a DSN to oversee your care? It's not good that you wasn't given any means to test your blood especially being on insulin. Wait until you see a diabetic specialist and then complain to him/her

People that can't listen to other people's opinions.
People that can't say sorry.
Yes, definitely... contact the PALS team at your hospital and tell them that you wish to submit a complaint.

I don’t know if you are a driver, but you cannot drive without blood testing...

Also you should have been told about prescriptions being free but you must complete a form first and have received your free prescription card before you can tick the box for free prescriptions.
That’s assuming by me that you are old enough to have been paying for prescriptions.

If you have not been told about these two things, well they ought to be in complaint as well.

A diabetic must test.. there is no two ways about it and they have been negligent in complying with NICE guidelines for T1 diabetics.

Don’t worry about complaining as they will treat you better next time from complaining. I have made complaints before and in the midst of one now regarding my husband dying without being assessed in 8 hours. Due to meet the Clinical Director this month. My complaint regarding myself gave me better care long term but this was regarding cancer and a hospitals care...
