How much egg whites/day can diabetics eat

Hi,
I wonder how much of egg whites a diabetic with nephropathy can take per day. I read that egg whites being a whole protein will not cause much problem.My concern here is not about the cholesterol or the about the caloric value but about how much of protein the kidneys can handle. and what is the safe limit. Any expert advice please..

Have you taken advice from a Dietician about this ? You would normally be advised by a Dietician if you need to follow a special diet. The advice you are given will depend on how well your kidneys are working, your blood test results and your own preferences about what you normally eat and drink.

The National Kidney Federation says that there is no special diet needed.......however if you already have Kidney damage then it may be that you need to limit intake of certain things, proteins etc.

Only a dietary expert can advise you what is the correct protocol........what is right for one person MAY NOT be right for you taking into account your particular circumstances and medical history. Hence I wouldn't advise you what is a safe limit for YOU.

We do have one recognised Dietician here who may be able to advise you in general terms......if she sees the post......

Hi, I do not suffer with kidney disease but typed in google "eggs and kidney disease" and it came up with a good selection that you could choose from. The one I looked at was nlm, came up second on my search. Hope you can get it sorted and hopefully someone with more knowledge will answer you soon

I wonder if the free range eggs have a smaller or bigger impact . Ican tell you this my wife and i lived off scrambled free range eggs on toast for 2 weeks .My cholestrol was lower after that time??

Thanks for posting, I was under the impression that usually high protein diets in diabetics with kidney disease are not adviced. But my diabetologist says to add 3-4 egg whites a day. Need to check with the dietary specialists

It's also very important to have good Diabetic control, BG levels all within targets and also ensure your blood pressure is 130/80 or less.......that will help limit any further damage. It is also true that high protein diets are not really advisable if you HAVE kidney disease.......

LOL. Hi daisy1 at the proper north england we still have wild chickens run about the streets all you have to do is follow them to there nesting areas. :wink:
