Raised liver function type one

Hiya,

I've had my routine bloods come back with raised liver function. I went back for repeat bloods and they were the same, over double what they should be.

My bilirubin, cholesterol and all other markers are normal.

I'm type one on a pump.

I've been referred for an urgent liver scan and my diabetic consultant said it had nothing to do with the diabetes and should be treated as an isolated condition.

I'm 32, good control and never been overweight. I had a baby 10 months ago.

GP won't say anything and said the differentials are great.

I'm genuinely scared, and just want to be as healthy as possible for my baby. Just wondered if anyone else has ever had anything similar?

I'm trying to detox but I wasn't unhealthy before and i don't drink alcohol.

Am hoping it's just a reaction and my liver will heal itself, but my mum died of cancer in her liver exactly one year ago so the timing couldn't be worse!

Thanks for your time.

Hi @Ica291, Waiting for tests to clarify what is happening is truly agonising and exasperating.
From my reading, the liver is a vast chemical factory with many reasons why something can appear out of kilter.
I hope you have answers soon and they are of the not too serious kind.

Try not to worry. It could simply be fatty liver (like a lot of T2s get). It's usually to do with carbs and not alcohol. My slim, non diabetic son had raised LFTs after a bout of glandular fever and had to have a scan and that's what his problem turned out to be. If that's the case with you too come back and we can help you to rectify that.

I am no doctor so don't know and may be wrong, but I would have thought that your CRP levels would be high too if you had anything very serious.

Whatever is wrong, your doc is right to send you for a scan. I hope you don't have to wait long. Let us know when you have the results, I'll be thinking of you. :)

Do you mean raised liver enzymes, eg ALT or AST or both? Have you been using any new medications in the last 6 - 8months?

Did you increase your carbs alongside insulin which pregnant, especially last trimester, like me?
I'd say if so it's all carb related.
If on normal carb intake now then liver will slowly improve.
If you were a type2 I'd have encourage you to go low carb til it was back to normal.

Are you taking other prescription meds? The liver has to filter the toxins out of meds.

Hello all, I didn't get notified on your responses and I apologise for the late reply.

I am on no medication, no different diet etc etc. Scan showed no abnormality, no fatty liver.

I then saw a specialist who said there are 100 things that could cause a rise in ALT and AST. As I don't drink, or take medication (other than insulin), am not overweight, etc she had no idea why. She reckoned it would go away by itself and to have repeat bloods until that happened.

Low and behold, my liver bloods are now normal.

So basically, there were no answers, no reasons, the liver was stressed for about a year and then sorted itself out.......

I am, to say the least, extremely relieved. Thank you everyone xxx
