Hi I've been checking this site for a while but have only just registered. I'm 27 and have had diabetes for 25 years. It will be nice to have people to chat to. I'm struggling to get my blood sugars steady and it's leaving me really tired (and grumpy!). The diabetes nurses don't understand at all. Over the last few years they've told me to do less than 2 bloodtests a day, accused me of eating sugary things and told me to just get on with it. I go to bed with blood sugars of 13, have toast as a snack, but wake up within 30 minutes really low (less than 2). It's left me too scared to go to sleep so I normally stay awake until 3am and now I'm exhausted.

Having no energy as this is so limiting.
Hi Twilight and welcome. :)

Sorry I can't help as I don't know about T1 but hopefully another T1 will be along soon to offer some advice.
You seem to be having a tough time so it might be an idea to tell us a bit more so that it will be easier to understand the problems you are having, things like what eating plan you are using and what medication etc.

Hiya twighlight
it sounds to me that you want to expressing your concerns to your practise manager .
If they are accusing you of lying then the best thing you could do is phone 999 everytime your levels are less than 4 they will trace your unusual levels and you can tell them what your health care from your GP's is down right dangerious to be honest . I'm not that long diagnosed but i would'nt accept the service you are recieving . JF

Thanks The nurse that told me to not do a lot of bloodtests has now left luckily. I've seen a different diabetes specialist every year since I was 18 and still haven't found one that will help me.

I started going high a lot but everytime I reduced my insulin I would go really low. I had page after page of high bloodtests and when I showed them to the diabetes nurse she said that because my hba1c (i hate the hba1c) was good she 'wasn't prepared to change my insulin'. I started to find that because my hba1c was good that was all that mattered, even though I had proof that my bloodsugars were seriously out of control. After I got the same response from a few people I refused to have the hba1c done so they refused to see me. I'm now seeing a new diabetes team who are willing to help me change my insulin but I've started having concentration problems. I feel like I need some time out to adjust to a new insulin regime but I'm looking for a job and can't afford not to

I have 2 injections a day. I have weetabix for breakfast, an apple as a snack, sandwiches for lunch, a cereal bar for another snack, jacket potato, pasta, rice or something similar homemade for dinner and then toast before I go to bed. My blood sugars are around 13 during the day and before bed. I avoid stress as much as possible and avoid any rushing round so everything I do is calm and slow. But I still keep going low at night

jacket potatos very high in carbs also rice is the same . If you would like some good dieting advice on carbs affecting your levels have a look on the index page called non carbing diets . I can't fully remember at the moment but there is a post called viv's diet have a look and see .Some people have done very well non carbing and i know your gonna say i thought rice or potatos etc are advised .Just have a look at all the options i certainly thought apples were healthy . And the research will send you tired

Thanks justfocus
I tend to eat really small portions because I'm always too thirsty to eat much. I'm normally ok with weetabix but i've had sugar free muesli this week and it's made me really high. I'll have a look at the lo carb diet now but I have to admit I've always been a bit wary of it.

I think the problem I have is that because I was diagnosed as a child it's always been assumed that I already knew everything, when I actually knew nothing because I was too young to remember it all at 1 year old! I've asked the diabetes staff to explain things better to me but I can never remember it (I think I block it all out). I've tried phoning Diabetesuk but found them surprisingly unfriendly.

This morning by BS was 19.8 I had an extra 5 units of insulin, went out for a long walk, had a bacon roll for lunch and got home to find that my BS was still 17. I had another 2 units and 2 extra with my evening injection. I'm now 5.8 but because I've been going high for so long I now feel shaky and low anything below 8.

twilight,

I think its time you asked your diabetes care team to change you over to a basal/bolus regime, this means changing from your current 2 injections to 4 but this gives patients a greater flexibility to what and when they can eat whilst producing better postprandial bg readings. Should you make the change you can then ask your care team to enroll you onto a carb counting course such as DAFNE (Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating) which will teach how to count the carbs in your food and match it with the correct amount of insulin.
