Extreme Tiredness

For the past couple of weeks I've been sleeping upwards of 17 hours a day every day. Has anyone experienced this with higher numbers or should I be looking for an alternative cause?

Hi @samochod Are you on insulin ?

Running high will impact your energy levels, my favourite analogy is a formula 1 car running on diesel, your blood is clogged with glucose which isn't being processed efficiently and your body isn't functioning at it's max performance so you will need to speak to your team about getting your levels down, in the meantime drinking plenty of fluids to help flush glucose through your system and avoiding high carbs which will only antagonise the situation.

My blood sugars are high, working on getting them down. I feel exhausted however I also have fibromyalgia and inflammatory arthritis.
Hope you feel better very soon.

No insulin, no. I'm on 3 types of tablet (names escape me, my head is constantly foggy these days)

Don't know about a F1 car... more like an unplugged slot car outside a supermarket

That's not fun @samochod - time to get yourself an appointment and get those BG levels sorted, it's not great to be feeling like this, can you call your DSN now and get an appointment ? Running high levels is not a good place to be and once you get your numbers down your thinking will improve greatly.

I appreciate I know very little about your circumstances and I noticed your new on the site so have a good look round, read up on 'Success stories' @Rachox has an amazing story to tell about her journey and her success in getting her diabetes into remission.

Thanks for the tag @Juicyj
I was tired and foggy headed prior to diagnosis, but just put these symptoms down to getting older. My diabetes was found by chance on an annual check up. It was only when I got my diagnosis and set about getting my blood sugars back to normal that I felt better and realised how poorly I’d been feeling.
So in answer to your question, yes your tiredness could be your high sugars but it sounds like whatever the cause you need a review with your Dr.

Very well done on your success! It's great to hear a bit of good news every now and then.

I'm going through an unprecedented stressful period just now and I'm certain the high numbers are linked. Hopefully if I come out the other side one will help the other. I definitely know what you mean, it's scary how easily feeling disgusting can begin to feel normal.

Thank you for your kind words. Sorry to hear you’re going through a tough time, I hope it passes soon but yes stress can put your sugars up which in turn stresses you out.

I was regularly sleeping 10+ hours every night when I had high blood sugars, and embarrassingly would fall asleep on the sofa around 9pm. Which I don't think you're allowed to do as a 'normal' person until you're a bit older than I am.

I had no idea I had high sugars - I thought the sleepiness it was from depression. Which of course, was linked to me eating lots of biscuits as comfort food.

Now I sleep 6/7 hours a night, and it still really surprises me when I am awake and not at all tired at 11pm.

Can I ask if you test your own blood sugars, before and after meals, and also when you feel so tired and grotty? What sort of levels aere you seeing? Can you also have a look at the meds you are taking and let us know what they are - it is important we know this so we can give you appropriate advice. :)

I'm on Alogliptin/Metformin 12.5/1000MG one twice a day, Dapagliflozin 10MG once a day and Gliclazide 80MG two twice a day. I don't test my sugars, I cannot really afford it just now (what price do you put on your health, I know) but I had my BG taken ag the GP a few weeks ago and it was 31.1. I had it taken a few days lated at the hospital and it was 19 and that was after being on the go for 15 hours without eating anything at all. My previous Hba1c was 117 that was when my GP added the Gliclazide in but my latest Hba1c was taken last week and has come back at 131.

Goodness, with all that medication your levels should be a lot lower.

I really urge you to get a meter. Do you drive or operate machinery? If so, you should be prescribed a meter and strips by your GP because of the Gliclazide. Meanwhile, I really urge you nto buy one. It could be a life saver for you. The Codefree and Tee2 are the meters withg the cheapest strips. @Rachox can help you with this. (I am away from home and don't have my bookmarks). Unless you were misdiagnosed and are actually Type 1, it sounds like it could be your diet that needs attention. Can you share with us what a typical days food consists of?

Here are some meters that are popular on the forum:

Taken from a post by @Bluetit1802 as she wrote it so nicely:

The most popular meters for self funding T2's are the Codefree and the Tee2 because the strips are much cheaper than other meters, and you need a lot of strips. You can't buy them in pharmacies.

Try here for the Codefree meter

http://homehealth-uk.com/product-category/blood-glucose/blood-glucose-monitor/

and here for the extra strips

http://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/sd-codefree-test-strips-to-be-used-only-with-the-sd-monitor/

There are discount codes if you buy in bulk.

5 packs 264086

10 packs 975833

The Tee2 is here

Don’t forget to check the box that you have diabetes so you can buy VAT free. (for either meter)

These are dangerously high levels You muxt be aware that you may be heading for DKA. You need, as a matter of urgency, to get your levels down much lower than this. DKA is a life threatening condition. What are you eating? you probably also need to look at your diet and start getting rid of high carb food and drink. But first things first get an appointment with GP/Diabetes Specialist Nurse to get your sugars sorted out! If you're not in UK go to the ER. All the medication in the world won't help until you actually realise that you need to reduce carb intake!

You should certainly be eligible for strips and a meter from your GP if in the UK. Unfortunately if you're elsewhere, you may have to get your insurance to fork out for them.

Plus, as advised by an other member, all the fluid in the world wqon't help to reduce BG that high. All it's likely to do, if you start guzzling large amounts of fluid, is deplete your body's electrolyte levels, leading to further issues.

Sorry for not replying sooner. I developed a really bad headache in my right temple and behind the eye last night and it still hasn't shifted. Once I can think straight I'll get back to you.

I hope things have improved for you since this post, I am going through a very similar lack of energy foggy head constantly tired etc and yes all the doctors say is its down to your diabetes ( which is the standard quote for everything since diagnosis) what I have found using a test meter is my food puts me at a high of 9 or 10 whilst an everyday stress attack puts me at 15! so no matter how much I eat well my A1c is still up as Im stressed day in day out

The problem is high blood sugars..happens to me. I find eating same thing Two meals a day same time 12 md and 5pm With 50 grams of Carb drinking only water from 6pm through to 11am you will be amazed at the energy you will slowly get back.. This gives the body enough time during a Nights fasting to chuck out the glycemic load..
