Hi friends I am still battling low carb but my kidneys last time I had a blood test are working at 30 but now I have metallic taste in my mouth and I am panicking Incase my kidneys are giving up.
I try to keep off sweet things most of the time and have started making low carb sweet desserts. Should I go vegetarian would that help.
Or would limiting fat help I just need some advise please friends.

Sorry to hear you’re getting symptoms that are worrying you. I think rather than starting altering your diet, the best thing to do is to consult your GP and he’ll order a new blood test if he thinks that’s what’s needed. All the best x

Poor grammar, bullying and drunks.
There are a few things that can cause taste disturbance, I get a metallic taste when I have sinusitis and some people get it as a side effect of Metformin.
I think you need to speak to your GP about this, there's no use in making any big changes until you know exactly where you stand. Good Luck and best wishes.

How low carb? Being in Ketosis can cause a metallic taste - definitely affects me. But best to check with your doctor - hope all will be OK.

it is really hard for any of us to give you a 100% sure advice if you are battling with kidney problems, are your kidneys working at 30% ?
then you should do what is adviced by kidney specialists, as I am informed it is essential not to eat too many proteins in such a case, your kidneys must have first priority as their health are essential for you to be able to have a good life..

too little amount of proteins is also bad for your body,I think the best you could do is to use a food tracker on your phone, I myself use lifesum which also keeps track of protein and fats and carbs in the meals I eat.

if you have your body weight and height, and an idea of your ideal weight, you can also find out your level of ideal grams of proteins in a day.
for a woman that doesn´t do a lot of exercises and weight training, the level of proteins in total daily is around 0.7-0.8 grams pro kg lean body weight, so a woman of like 75 kg of lean bodyweight would need around 60 grams of proteins daily in total.

here is a calculator where you can put in you numbers and find at what level you total calories have to be to keep weight or if you want to lose weight, I think it would be essential not to be too drastic in any way in your situation, so at least eat the number of proteins you need daily and make sure also not to get too many proteins.

Just to make you feel a little better (I hope) my dad had kidney failure, but we were told by a consultant that you only need 5% of one kidney to be working to still be ok.

Hi. Metformin can cause a metallic taste; it did for me in the first 6 months of use. Low-carbing is usually good advice but don't worry about the fats.

Byetta made me incredibly sick. Actually throwing up every couple of hours, BUT also produced a metallic iron/zinc type taste. At the time I thought it was the throwing up that produced the taste, but could well have been the Byetta. If you read the info leaflet is a peculiar taste listed as one of the side effects?

As far as the kidneys go, I too have had eGFR s of 30. Didn't have a metallic taste at that time, in fact I have gone down to 5, but I was in hospital having a bad reaction for that reading. Two points: 1) the test results (assuming blood test not mri) are not exact, you shouldn't worry until you have a run of low number results, 2) if treated well, kidney function can get better e.g. my GFR is now (as of last test) 60

Treating your kidneys well? Basically eat sensibly. Don't overload your plate with meat, make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids.

I don't think you need to worry, but I'm a random person off the internet, so if you are worried go to your GP. Another blood test, preferably taken at a different time of day (yes the eGFR is that variable!), should indicate if there is a concern.

Thank you for your reply,I have found the Byette ok no problems and only started getting this metallic taste over the last month. I will watch the amount of meat I eat and will have to have more veg haven’t for a long time and on low carb I have avoided fruit because of being Diabetic.

Hi @Motherhen2014

Your healthcare team are definitely the best people to go to for advice on kidney problems.
However, you asked whether going vegetarian and cutting fat would help...

That depends entirely what you want to achieve.
Some vegetarians eat lower protein than meat eaters. But it is possible to eat quite a lot of protein as a vegetarian - it all depends on food choices. What advice have you been given by your healthcare team on protein intake?

Vegetarianism is often accompanied by higher carb intake. Although, again, that is personal choice.

What is certain though, is that raised blood glucose (caused by an excess of carbs) will damage kidneys in the long term.

As for fat, your kidneys do not process fat, or eliminate fat, so the fat content of your diet will not strain them or damage them.
Obviously, you can check this with your healthcare team.

Thank you for your reply I get so confused as I thought that too much fat makes you put on weight and protein was good as long as it wasn’t fried and fat taken off, it’s hard. Trying to unlearn a life times learning. I like meat but have go avoid lamb beef and bacon as my tummy doesn’t like it,
I had a message from someone last night who said limiting protein is the answer and drinking plenty and avoiding sugar. Which is most of my struggle I love my food sometimes so it is a battle but Ibam trying go find an easy calculator for carbs and protein if U can battles that and the sweet things it would be half the battle. But thank you for your advice I will see. My doctor ASAP . Xx

Fortunately, kidneys and liver have huge reserve and we can actually live on very low percentage of their function.
The worst enemy leading to kidney failure is hypertension (high blood pressure) and it should be addressed in the first place.
Talk to your doctor to have medications and diet redesigned from the aspect of potential kidney failure.
In short, consult a nephrologist and good luck.
