Hi Rustyboy,

You could google Frio pouch and see if that will meet your requirements.

I agree with rglennon thatFrio pouches are excellent for keeping insulin cool, all it takes is to submerge the pouch in cold water to activate the cystals and your away, I find the pouch can keep cool for up to 4-5 days but this depends on the temperature they are stored in.

I used to take (as I was camping before frilo pouches) an airtight container and spare bowl with me, then insulin in airtight container, fill the bowl with cold water then put into the shade, when I moved upto a trailer tent it was kept under the bedding area, as it's pretty cool under there..

Never had a problem with any insulin going off even on 3 weeks stays when I only had the cool box, and no ability to refreeze the ice packs for it..

Don't forget both will last a month at normal temps, as long as they are not in direct sunlight

Make yourself a Evaporation Cooler

To make one, take a large cake or biscuit tin and stand it on flat stones or wood blocks
IN A LARGER TRAY of water. Drape a wet towel over the box so that the edges of the towel stay in the tray. The better the draught over the towel, the greater is the evaporation. Heat for evaporation comes from the water and from the metal box. Anything stored in the box will be kept cool, although not cold. Top up the water at intervals. This device works well enough to preserve perishable food for about as long as it would last in the middle of a fridge.

I went through all sorts of things to try & keep insulin cool/cold etc when I first went onto it & this subject was raised on my DAFNE course.

The diabetic specialist nurse stated that an insulin pen is good for a month when not stored in a fridge. The best practice is to keep a pen in the fridge, but when it becomes impractical to do so it is still good to go for up to a month.

This info was also backed up by a rep from one of the big pharmacutical companies who attended the course to advise (make that sell) us on new products.

I have on occassions taken an insulin pen to work & because of running/cycling home and doing the same thing to get back the next day etc I've left it in my locker (fridges are communal and there's over 100 people work in the building) and I've never had a probelm. Sometimes the insulin is either in my pocket or in my locker for 4/5 days at a time (ie not kept refridgerated at all during these times) and as I said I've never had a problem.

You just need to make sure that the pen is being kept at an ambient temperature, ie not being exposed to extremes of temperatures. I've been away on motorcycling camping trips and obviously there si only so much you can carry on a motorbike. I have a small waist bag that I keep attached to me at all times when on the bike as it holds wallet/phone/money etc, I keep my pens in that so they're always at hand, kept out of direct sunlight during the day etc.
