Hello everyone! First of all my name is Nikola and i am from Serbia ( and also my english is not that good ;-;, so sorry if i make any grammatical mistakes ) So my question is.. is there anyone that still takes Levemir and Novorapid, basically what my problem is that i think Levemir does not last for 24 hours, i inject levemir once a day ( at 10pm, sometimes 11pm every night, 18 units ) and my blood sugar is usually good if i wake up at 8am, and if i dont and lets say i wake up at 9:30-10am my blood sugar wont be as good, but that rarely happens because i try to wake up at the same time every single day. Then before my first meal of the day at 8:15am i inject 14 or 15 units of novorapid ( depends on what i eat for breakfest and how many carbs i eat ) and then what my biggest problem is that Novorapid also lasts only 3.5-max 4 hours, so i have to inject it again at 12:30pm and every time force myself to inject it ( novorapid ) and eat every 4 hours because if i dont my blood sugar levels literally go from 5.5 ( normal ) to 15-16 and sometimes even higher than that, and then again at 5pm i have to eat and inject another 14-15 units and then at 10pm again 18 units of levemir and over and over every single day, i am kinda tired of it. I have heard that there are some people that are on 2 dosages of Levemir ( before they go to sleep and 1 dosage when they wake up ) is that true? And also what would i have to do with my 3 doses of Novorapid? Thanks in advance guys, and once again i hope that you understand what i mean, because my english is trash .-.

Your English is great - I speak no Serbian!
Yes you can slit your basal (levemir) then take novorapid as usual.
Have you done any basal testing to check your basal is right? Just because the all day rise suggests you might need a bit more - could be useful to try before splitting.

Welcome Jokara - I am type one and take Novorapid before lunch and before dinner (4 or 5 units) I take a 24 hour long lasting insulin every evening which lasts 24 hours, a different brand name from yours. What do you eat on a usual day? I have restricted my carbs and that's why I don't need as much insulin as I would otherwise. I eat no rice, pasta, potatoes, bread and no sweets. I eat above-ground vegetables, 2 or 3 fruit a day spaced out over time, plenty of meat and cheese, plus fats like butter, olive oil. If you cut your carbs your insulin needs will drop. So what do you eat? Your English is very good.

Hi Jokara

I am on Levemir and Novorapid. I have split doses of Levemir so I am on 16 at 9am and 10 in the evening. I take Novorapid 3/4 times a day depending on when I eat.

Speak to a specialist about splitting your Levemir into 2 injections

I split my Levemir dose which is what I was recommended to do when I started on it. 10 units around 6.00 a.m. and 8 at 10.30 p.m. which seems to work well for me.

Novorapid - it depends on what I eat or how much I'm going to be walking, as a walk longer than 1/2 hour can drop my blood sugars.

Thank you guys for your answers, i really appreciate it! Yeah i eat around 2300-2600 calories a day ( currently trying to put some weight for summer ) I run every other day and live a pretty active lifestyle ( i also workout at least 4-5 days a week ) I eat healthy fats ( eggs/olive oil/avocado/walnuts, etc.. ) and around 100-120 grams of carbs a day because if i dont eat carbs i literally cant perform in the gym nor run ( i was on keto diet a few months ago but i switched to this type of diet because i am actually trying to gain some weight and on keto thats pretty hard ) @Japes ( Sorry for tagging you, i dont even know if its allowed or not, if its not please let me know and i will untag ._. ) So when do you eat your breakfest? at 6am or? if so do you inject your Levemir + Novorapid at the same time before you eat your breakfest or just Levemir and then before your lunch and dinner only novorapid and then at 10:30pm 2nd dose of levemir. Could i PM you? @Diakat Yeah they told me to increase my Levemir dosage ( i was on 15 units a month ago and now i am on 18 ) but the problem is that my Levemir only lasts for 8 to max 10 hours, if i inject it at 10pm it only lasts until 8am so thats why i want to split it and inject it twice a day, they didnt tell me nothing about it, i might have to find a new doctor but thats pretty hard here in Serbia, it seems like that theres no good one.. I also dont want to eat every 4 hours because sometimes i am just not hungry and sometimes i have to force myself to eat lunch at 12:30pm even though i want to eat my lunch at 2pm.

@Jokara232

My usual routine is
  • Levemir and Novorapid at 6.00 a.m. and breakfast then.
  • 2nd small breakfast of around 10 carbs if blood sugars are low-ish, (under 5 for me) around 10.30 a.m.
  • Novorapid as needed with Lunch at 12.15 p.m.
  • Check again at 4.00 p.m. especially if walking home - often need a small snack then especially if under 7.
  • Novorapid as needed with evening meal around 5.30 - 6.00 p.m.
  • 2nd dose of Levemir at 10.30 p.m.
I only have the between meal snacks if my bloods are low or if I'm going to be walking for than 1/2 hour.
I only have more Novorapid if I'm over 10 at the mid-morning/mid-afternoon checks and bedtime. Which may or may not be at 10.30 p.m.

This is only what I've found works for me. The only exercise I do is walking, or housework and gardening and a reasonably active job in education (which is why my timings are pretty routine, I stick to what works on a work day timetable. I'm less routine bound out of term time!) I'm also a reasonably small, middle-aged woman trying to lose a little weight, but not much.

You definitely shouldn’t have to eat every four hours.
Try splitting and see how you go.
