I’m more frightened by the side effects than excited about any health benefits of pickle juice! :wideyed:

I might try this, not for diabetes but for leg cramps that I get sometimes. However where do you get this pickle juice from? I assume that pickle in the US translates to gherkin in the UK, but all the gherkins I buy are in vinegar not "fermented".

Hypos, rude people, ignorance and grey days.
I love the use of the word 'may'...

Having just eaten my way through pickled cucumbers and extra strong pickled onions this week I hope this does work !!

Urghhh! No way does that appeal to me.

A couple of years ago I read that sauerkraut was good for reducing BG so I had some every day for a couple of weeks and, yes, my BG did go down a bit but the digestive 'issues' were horrendous and I suspect pickle juice might be the same. :dead:

I’ve heard it touted as a cure for keto flu (the salts helping depleted electrolytes). But not for bgl

Not sure it needs to be fermented.. maybe just try with gherkins and see how it goes. I think its mainly as an electrolite replacement drink. Water, salt and vinegar I guess you could add some magnesium salts which are meant to be good for cramps too?

It says in the OP's reference....
The cucumbers are fermented by Lactobacillus bacteria, which normally cover the cucumber's skin.
However, these beneficial probiotic bacteria are usually removed during commercial processing, and vinegar is added instead.

The vinegar version might still work for cramps though, I will keep a jar of gherkins on my bedside table.

Cruelty. I am kind.
By Pickle juice they mean the liquid of naturally fermented vegetables. Not pickled in vinegar.
It is pretty good for you in moderation, it carries a wide range of friendly bacteria. Many of us need help with our digestion after a lifetime of high carb western diet!
It can be had from specialist suppliers and it tastes ok as a condiment, but personally I can't eat enough of it to justify buying it or making it. The other popular naturally fermented food is Kefir. They even sell that is Tesco these days, although they have killed a large proportion of the natural bacteria to meet food standards.

Kefir (the proper stuff, not the supermarket versions laced with fruity bits) helps my grouchy intestines - I buy mine from a health food chop and you can also get goat's milk kefir. You can make it yourself from grains but I haven't tried that. I do like sauerkraut with slices of beef wrapped in lettuce leaves (again you can make your own sauerkraut and other fermented veggies) but drinking pickle juice? Hmmm. I'd rather crunch a blow-your-socks-off pickled onion. I think the question of marital bliss comes into all this as well..... I'm taken with @Mr_Pot's suggestion of a jar of gherkins by the bedside :D

I eat quite a bit of sauerkraut from time to time and really like it and it is supposed to be good for you they love it in the eastern european countries. It is fermented cabbage not pickled as we know it so I take it the liquid is the pickle juice that they refer to. I usually buy it in jars but I did buy one of the circular fermented cabbages and there was loads of it although it was one of the smaller ones so I froze it in portions and it was fine and lasted for ages .It seems to be a special kind of cabbage used as you can buy them fresh and they are flat and round and some are huge

Fermented vegetables are very easy to make.
All kinds of recipes on the web.
I do think the vinegar from the pickles is good to help with the carb flu became of the salt.

I love sauerkraut - traditionally made under the outdoor stairs in great big stoneware containers in Bavaria. I think there’s a recipe in Elizabeth David somewhere. In France choucroute (same stuff) comes from the butcher in November and signals the cold season. The french version is filled with sausages, smoked pork belly and the like. Our forefathers knew a bit about diet! Nowadays I just buy it from Waitrose in jars and use it like a condiment.

Hey @Mr_Pot if you are having trouble with leg cramps, maybe you should consider getting some Magnesium oil. I did so after @Brunneria talked about it. Wonderful stuff - apply directly on the sore muscles - easier than sitting in an epsom bath salts tub full of water!! It was great advice and I would encourage you to give it a try and quite reasonable price too. Cheers/L
