Hi Storm and welcome to the forum :) I understand how confused you feel - I felt the same until I found this forum. To help you, here is some information written for new members by our friends Sue and Ken, the former monitors, which should answer some of your questions. Have a read of it and whatever questions you have, feel free to ask as many as you like as someone will always answer you.

Here is the advice that Ken and I, as Forum Monitors, usually give to newly diagnosed Diabetics. We hope that these few ideas gained through experience help you to gain control and give you some understanding of Diabetes. This forum doesn't always follow the recommended dietary advice, you have to work out what works for you as we are all different.

It's not just 'sugars' you need to avoid, diabetes is an inability to process glucose properly. Carbohydrate converts, in the body, to glucose. So it makes sense to reduce the amount of carbohydrate that you eat which includes sugars.

For more information on CARBOHYDRATE see here:

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=20306

This is NOT a low carb diet suggestion, just a reduction in your intake of carbohydrate. You have to decide yourself how much of a reduction will keep your blood glucose levels in control.

The main carbs to avoid OR reduce are the complex or starchy carbohydrates such as bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, starchy root veg and also any flour based products. The starchy carbs all convert 100% to glucose in the body and raise the blood sugar levels significantly.

If you are on Insulin you may find that reducing the carb intake also means that you can reduce your dose of insulin. This can help you to keep weight gain down as Insulin tends to make you put on weight and eventually cause insulin resistance. This should be done slowly so as not to cause hypos.

The way to find out how different foods affect you is to do regular daily testing and keep a food diary for a couple of weeks. If you test just before eating, then two hours after eating, you will see the effect of certain foods on your blood glucose levels. Some foods, which are slow acting carbohydrates, are absorbed more slowly so you may need to test three or even four hours later to see the effect that these have on your blood glucose levels.

Buy yourself a carb counter book (you can get these on-line) and you will be able to work out how much carbs you are eating, when you test, the reading two hours after should be roughly the same as the before eating reading, if it is then that meal was fine, if it isn’t then you need to check what you have eaten and think about reducing the portion size of carbs.

When you are buying products check the total carbohydrate content, this includes the sugar content. Do not just go by the amount of sugar on the packaging as this is misleading to a diabetic.

As for a tester, try asking the nurse/doctor and explain that you want to be proactive in managing your own diabetes and therefore need to test so that you can see just how foods affect your blood sugar levels. Hopefully this will work ! Sometimes they are not keen to give Type 2’s the strips on prescription, (in the UK) but you can but try!!

For TIPS FOR STRIPS see here:

viewtopic.php?f=20&t=19002#p173253

If you are an Insulin user in theory you should have no problem getting test strips.

The latest 2011 NICE guidelines for Bg levels are as follows:
Fasting (waking and before meals).......between 4 - 7 mmol/l...(Type 1 & 2)
2 hrs after meals........................no more than 8.5 mmol/l.....( Type 2)

2hrs after meals......................... no more than 9 mmol/l ......(Type 1)

If you are able to keep the post meal numbers lower, so much the better.

It also helps if you can do at least 30 minutes moderate exercise a day, it can be split into 10 min sessions to start with. It doesn't have to be strenuous.

The above is just general advice and it is recommended that you discuss with your HCP before making any changes. You can also ask questions on the forum on anything that is not clear.

Finally a few QUESTIONS TO ASK AT DIABETES CLINIC.

Hello, after the initial shock/panic you'll soon realise diabetes is not a problem it 's just a change! A problem holds you back but diabetes just means a bit of self control and sense at times-you'll be fine.

Feeling a bit sorry for myself at the moment :(

I would say that now I've got it it ain't going to go away so I wont let it frighten me or get me down. It's easy to get obsessed by it.

Got to go back in two weeks, and keep a food diary during that period. Been given Metformin tablets to take, I will start them on Monday

Hi welcome Storm

Be prepared to learn a whole new langauge, see food in a totally different perspective than you've done before, oh and for now on any ailment you visit your doctor with it be 'that be the diabetes!'

And belive me the medic's can link a broken toe to diabetes  Yes I was asked if I had had a hypo when I broke my little toe Nooooo.. I just didn't have a pair of shoes on when I banged the door stop!!!

Take a look around, plenty of idea's to tame the blood glucose, and ask all the questions you need no question is consider silly if you don't the answer.. Unless of cause you'll asking how many carbs in a mouse!

Don't feel too down - you soon get used to the routine of it. I am almost glad I got diabetes as because of it I found this forum and friends. I don't know anyone with diabetes outside this forum. I do remember when I was first diagnosed. I didn't feel down to start with - I just refused to believe it  Thanks to the advice on here I have got my levels completely under control so I don't worry about it any more. I expect you'll be the same in time. Just keep popping in here :)

Too right it's easy to get obsessed! My doc tells me life is precious so enjoy it without worry. Obviously there are common sense changes to make but it needn't be negative. I have lost just over a stone since diagnosis which'll help me play more competitively at badminton & I also love the compliments from friends who notice. I still go out, I just drink a bit slower (saves money too) or tonight I'm seeing a local band so my drink will sit on a table a long time while I applaud. I walk there and back so it's exercise all in all a guilt free night out.

Re: Hello and Welcome

Hi Storm, don't worry, you are amonst friends here, we are all in the same boat. Yes it is frightening at first, I was very frightened initially and as I was a senior nursing sister at the time of diagnosis I felt that I should have been full of answers but when things happen to you it's completely different. Just take it one day at a time and you will get to grips with everything soon enough. For me, it actually gave a the "kick up the a---" that I probably needed, with losing weight and some modification to my lifestyle. I now take moderate exercise and have lost some weight but by no means has having type 2 diabetes ruined my life, as I said in some ways it has enhanced it. So be positive and gain control by learning all that you can about diabetes because knowledge is power and ultimately you have control of your diabetes. Best wishes to you, Debra xx

Hiya, it'll be the shock making you feel bit down n numb, acts as an impact buffer to cope with the shock... then as you come around you can learn n develop a way to deal n tackle the diabetes in a positive way. I went through denial ' what!! me ??? no way ... ' to feeling a total failure especially when all meds I was put on failed to work! thats when I really did need my fellow diabetes contacts on here, as daisy says I too do not know any other diabetics except for the ones I meet up at the clinics. Take time out just for you [help you come to terms with it] n keep in touch with us all here, over time you will feel brighter n positive about your journey with diabetes. Anna.x :)

Oooh, can I go completely off topic for a moment and drool Sid.

I think that the only thing I miss about living in the UK is a good curry.

Welcome to the forum storm, btw :)

I'm back after a while :D

Well I managed to get my H1ABC down to 7% (was 13%) and give up fags (was 40 a day) and loose a stone , so all good fun.

I could kill for a kebab though
