Dvla hba1c question

Hello.
I've just applied for my provisional driving license in England.
Do the dvla by default contact your gp?
I haven't had an hba1c taken in over a year and haven't seen my GP in that time either. I do have records of good blood testing results however.
What is the likely outcome for me? Do I need an hba1c reading to proceed with getting my application approved ?
Thank you
Charlie

I don't think the dvla is interested in your hba1c. From what I know they only want to know about 'serious' hypo's (ie, the ones you needed help for).

Are you on insulin?

If you do, you need to fill in form D1AB1 and send it to them. They will contact your GP and ask if your diabetes is well controlled.

If you aren't on insulin, you do not need to tell them that you are diabetic.

Good luck with your lessons...

I am on insulin. What I really want to know is if the DVLA contact your GP or diabetic specialist regardless of the info you provide in their forms. eg, If I declare 0 serious hypos do they verify this with checks with healthcare professional? I have nothing to hide it's just I haven't seen this GP in ages and want to know if I'll need all the diabetes checks to be on her system before I submit the application. Thank you

They may do - my husband has a pace maker which DVLA are already aware of and he has recently been diagnosed with Parkinsonism which they have given him a 3 year medical licence for. His GP had to fill in a form for his pacemaker and they contacted his neurologist after his latest diagnosis.

If you are on insulin, wouldn't it be sensible to have an HbA1c anyway, and check in with your medical team?

Hi @Charlie-friend ,

T1, driving since 1986? I've had 3 year restricted licences renewed without an issue since passing my test.
I normally make sure an apointment with my GP coincides with the DIAB1 form send off to DVLA.
I tend to mention to my doc to expect contact from DVLA regarding a licence renewal. Have I anything to be concerned about?
I tend to get a "non plussed" response from the doc..

If you meet the criteria for fitness to drive? You should find the licence issue (in my case reissue.) pretty quick off the mark.
I've had letters stating they have received my form & dealing with the process drop through the door the same day as my new licence.

Good luck with your test!

Just renewed my driving licence for about the 12th time (every 3 years). As you say, the DVLA are pretty quick off the mark. I also received two notifications from them this weekend, the first telling me my new licence should take a couple of weeks to arrive, the second letter actually contained my new licence. Whether they do check your medical records is something I have never found out, but I do give them both my GP and hospital details.
