Struggling

Hi all. This is my first post on the website. I was diagnosed 12 months ago and for the most part have just got on and tried to deal with it all. Over the past few weeks there has been a lot of stress and I find I am really struggling. My levels have been up and down and I'm asking "why me?". I hate that I am feeling like this, there are so many people who have worse problems, but I feel resentful. How bad is that?! Is it normal to feel this way? I'm usually the sort of person who just gets on with things. When I was diagnosed, the first thing I did was find out everything I could about Type 1 so feeling like this is so not me. I'm sorry if I sound pathetic but I am struggling.

not type one, so hug sent just to let you know someone read it.

its a major shock getting any long term illness.

we then go find out an awful lot in a short space of time,
that info an worry, can throw us off track,
add in some recent stress and your probably dealing with some things you maybe
could of had to face earlier, but tried to shrug off.

we are all different in how and WHEN we deal with problems.

pretty sure your not the first to feel 'why me'.
but the good news is, your aware, so hopefully with a little help from others better aware of type 1,
you'll be able to take stock and move on.

wishing you the very best.

Hi @winelover and welcome to a great off-loading and uploading service! There must be thousands, on the forum alone, who have felt the same way. It would be strange if you didn't, regardless of your usual mindset. I spent my entire childhood and various times beyond that thinking "Why me?" No one else in my family had this imposed on them. I had a pancreas/kidney transplant in 2013, ending 54 years of Type 1. Two months later I was diagnosed with Charcot foot and was confined to a wheelchair and/or crutches for 10 months. Again I thought "Why me?" until I got picked up by the transport ambulance to go to a check up in Cambridge. Inside were 2 diabetics in wheelchairs with no legs at all.... It's all relative, but doesn't make your reaction any less valid. However, there are so many decent posters on this forum, and no matter what you need to know (no question related to the big D is considered stupid. Some of us had much longer to figure things out before the arrival of instant knowledge), somebody will be there to try and help. We all have an advantage over doctors in that we can spend as much time (even none!) as we like on any one point. I hope you soon manage to focus on the positives. You have already started, by posting this thread. Good luck!

You are never alone, you're sailing the same ship as us. If anything, I know there are diabetes specialist therapists, I think you need to ask about it because I didn't know until it was mentioned at my hospital. I felt a similar way when I was in and out of hospital for 3 years for DKA. It's not too bad when diabetes is in control, it's like we are best chums. :D

Stress messes up numbers (as does all sorts of other things). Hang on in there and things will get better again.

Hi .....lately my BS has been up and down and no matter what i seem to do or tweek what im eating is having a desired effect on lowering my BS. I have changed my diet over the last 18 moth and have lost over 40lbs, although i now feel great and look real healthy which i love. My problem is when testing my BS when out of bed which is usually around 6am daily (work) , my BS can be ranging from 11 to 14. I eat either to wholemeal toasts for breakie or maybe 2 weetabix, Lunch ,which will be soup or a salad, and evening meal will be some fish or meat with veggies, couple of times a week i;ll have Greek yogurt with strawberries, but the high readings in the morning have got me down a bit........i used to be between 5-7 most mornings and early evening the same, but now ive spiked im concerned, a keep a daily diary of what im eating, and the only thing i can think of is my breakfast, but i must eat in morning or by mid day i feel a bit sick with hunger.......im open for any suggestions that any one can come up with

Read up on Dawn Phenomenon- basically your liver can dump glucose to “help” you start the day.
Breakfast - how do you feel about bacon, sausage, eggs?

Ive now for last 5 days started having bacon n eggs, or salmon flakes with scrambled eggs, last couple of days BS in mornings have been 10.3 and today was 9.4........ive completely stopped my bread intake as was partial to an odd slice of brown, and no longer eating cereal....hopefully i will see the figures drop in next couple of weeks.

Hi. Well done on your weight loss. I hope your readings are looking better and you are feeling better about them. I noticed you said you have had strawberries. I've found they really spike my levels so now i have Greek yoghurt with cacao nibs and nuts instead.
