Thanks Dave, I was getting a bit worried that my numbers weren't coming down and adding that with the fact I haven't suffered from feeling sick ...I was wondering if Byetta wasnt working for me. I suppose 5 days isn't long enough for me to know anyway.

The feeling that this stuff is just not working for me is a real one for me as well.

In my case its in the mornings that don't feel as if it works. My breafast is just a few pieces of toast and even with the Byetta this does not lead to any "full feeling". My lunch is about 6 hours later and therefore around the maximum time period for the Byetta to work and most days it doesn't.

In the evening, my main meal of the day, it does work and I eat less, and later drink less as well.

My BGs are also not coming down and in fact have started to Yo-Yo a bit. Yesterday moring 14.2 today 10.4. etc The average remains at around 12.5.

My only saving grace is that there is some (slow) weight loss, about 7 lbs in 9 weeks.

It's strange because I don't feel as if Byetta has affected my appetite or made me feel fuller but the very act of the injections keeps me on my diet, makes me think about what I am doing and I have lost weight. My sugar levels didn't alter for first month but are now around 6-7 (were 12-14) so I am pleased about that. Keep with it apparently it sometimes takes a while to see results.

HELP PLEASE - CALLING KEN!!

After starting on insulin last November by February this year I had regained almost all the weight I had lost when I was on Byetta (14 kilos) which I was on for 15 months but my sugars refused to come down! The insulin has brought my sugars down but everything else has gone back up!!
At the end ofApril I finally got to see Consultant (after 14months waiting..) and he has put me back on the Byetta alongside the insulin to try and help me lose the weight. Unfortunately I am not losing the weight this time - I havent had the nausea like I did before but have felt extremely fatigued and wondered whether that could be the byetta?
I am due to see Consultant again in August and am sure that he will take me back off the byetta if I have not lost any weight. I am so disheartened Ken, the weight has all gone on around my middle and it has made my lower back problems worse and I am so uncomfortable.

As you well know, any advice, encouragement will be gratefully received.

Hope you are doing okay yourself at the moment? Love from Jude x

Hi Jude
Nice to see you back here but circumstances not so good from the sound of things ?

The only thing I can suggest is to go back to basics and make sure the carb count is down and portion sizes are reduced. Not sure what your diet involves at present but it does have a significant impact on Bg numbers and also can help to kick-start some weight loss as well.

Have a read of the 'Basic Advice for Newbies' (ignore newbies) which is at the top of the greetings and introduction section here. It may help you ?

As for me, I'm fine thanks but having an extended holiday and popping in when I feel like it. I will always be here for friends like you ! Just so you know Sue and I were unceremoniously dumped by the new 'team' here. Whatever ! So we don't monitor this place any more. Suits us, we hopefully won't get all the flack from certain quarters - however, don't hold your breath ! Anyway there are plenty of helpful members here.

If you need to give me a pm anytime.

Ken xx

Hi Ken

Thanks for your prompt response - I am sure you and Sue will be very much missed by us mere mortals!! you both have contributed so much, very sad.
Anyway, part of my problem in the beginning with the insulin was that I did not realise it made you feel hungry and when my sugars went too low I panicked and ate too much to counter it!! Anyway, that is mostly sorted now as I now understand the workings of the insulin but I am very disappointed that the byetta isnt giving me the benefit it did before.
Do you know of any others who are on Byetta with insulin - they might be able to help? I note Viv doesnt come on boards now but I have her email address and am keeping in contact with her direct.
As I probably told you before I need the carbs for my ibs and also the insulin soo it gets very tricky!! It is good to know that you are there for us anyway - will let you know how I get on over the next couple of months. Jude

There are one or two who use Insulin as well but mostly the ones you probably know are not around posting any more. People move on and off the place over time.

I remember about the IBS - that's the problem you have to work out just what you can tolerate carbs wise and what you need to keep the Bg's down. Difficult choices ! Its not really an area I feel competent to answer you on, wish I could be more help.

Next time you speak with Viv tell her we miss her and you on here . Quite the 'double act', even though the pair of you sometimes gave me a headache you were always great to know ! Give her my regards please.

Thank you for your kind words - you have cheered me up! and yes of course I will pass on your wishes to Viv - didnt quite appreciate we were a double act!!
If I do not get the weight loss with the Byetta I am going to ask to be referred for a gastric band - last year I asked my DSN and she said I wasnt big enough (?!!) but I have since regained 14 kilos so maybe I will qualify now!
Bye for now and goodnight. Jude :) x

ANYONE ON INSULIN AND BYETTA?

Long story short .....on byetta for 15months lost 14 kilos, unfortunately sugars did not come down enough so taken off byetta and put on to insulin. Sugars then came down and weight re-gained so now Consultant has put me on byetta with the insulin to see if the weight will shift but this time it is NOT going!!...HELP PLEASE ....
Any advice gratefully received except low carb advice because I also suffer with IBS and need carbs to try and keep that stable.

Re: ANYONE ON INSULIN AND BYETTA?

Not talking about byetta etc...because I don't know..however I can tell you something that hugely helped my niece's IBS.....

Niece had been investigated for everything concerning stomach and bowels and was decided that it was IBS-she was in her early teens....she got recommended to go to a hypnotherapist....one that specialises in IBS...and after 5 sessions she no longer has IBS. She had to have parents permission to see hypno..but ever since she has done everything from going to Australia by herself, other 3rd world countries on a volunteer basis by herself and now working back in UK.....my sister in law and brother swear that the hypnotherapist cured her.....

I would like to know who moved my post?? I put it as a separate posting because the byetta thread is so long and I know there will not be many people on insulin as well and I was trying to get some response. I posted on this thread before and the lovely Ken got back to me but he does not have experience of these two drugs together and I was hoping to find someone.
I have been on this forum for many years now and I am extremely disappointed.
donnellysdogs - I appreciate your response but unfortunately I have been living with ibs for over 40 years.
I was desperately looking for someone in the same boat as myself but sadly I have been denied that oppportunity. :(

I have sent you a pm ......

If we have any Byetta users who are also using insulin can you please offer Jude the benefit of your experiences with this combination.

I know we have members on both, let's see if we can give some help .......

Well its just been over a week on the 10MG dose, man am I feeling it, sick, dizzy, headache, chills, VERY sleepy for at least 3 hrs after injection, difficulty in concentrating, eating virtually nothing 1 hrs after injection (1/2 slice of brown un-buttered toast)

injected this morning at 7.30, just beginning to feel a bit more "Human" (now 10.10)

same in the evening, I'm going to persevere for another week, if the symptoms dont subside i will speak to my diabetic nurse to see if anything can be done ...

Dave sorry to hear you are struggling at the moment but if it is any consolation I too felt like that for 2/3 weeks after I went up to the 10mg dose but after 5 months on it I can report that my health care team are delighted with me. My last ha1bc was down to 6.2 and my weight has dropped 10 kilos. I will be honest and say that I still suffer from a loss of appetite and struggle to eat, I still feel tired and I do feel the cold but having got my blood sugar levels under control after 5/6 years of trying various other medications, diets etc., etc., my health care team consider me a byetta success story. I hope this gives you some hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel; and knowing that my sugars are under control helps me to know that at least there is probably little damage being done to my other organs! So the few side effects I am left with seem negligible by comparison. Good luck and try to keep going.x

Hi Jude

I also put on weight, about 3st after going onto insulin. My bg's were too high and when I showed concern was advised by my diabetic nurse to keep increasing the insulin. This was the worst advice.

I asked if there were any alternatives, and was given Byetta last April. I was on the 5mg dose and half my previous dose of insulin for 2 months and then tried the 10mg and a quarter of the insulin. The nausea was very severe so after 3 months I went back to the 5mg dose but by then I had lost 10 kg and continued to lower the insulin.

I have now lost 22kg and have dropped from 100 units of insulin to 10 units a day. I have not lowered my carbohydrate intake as it was low before and my weekly bg average has been between 6.5 and 7.0, but my Hba1c reading this week was 7.9, still too high.

I am now a size 12/14 and weigh 78k, from a size 18/20 and 100kg a year ago and am delighted, but apparently need to lose another 8kg and hopefully my Hba1c will come down and I will be able to come off the insulin completely.

Byetta and insulin together has worked very well for me, but I am now struggling to lose weight. I don't particularly want to go any thinner but need to bring my Hba1c down. I am very active and eat healthily.

If anyone else has had a similar problem please let me know.

Beryl

I tried Byetta and did so for three months, however, I had a lot of side effects such as nausea (only had one day where I did not cope with this.

However, I had a lot of problems with inflamed injection sites, hives and intense itchiness.

Have since changed to Victoza with no side affects, however, I feel I lost more weight on Byetta, and noticably so...

In my limited experience you have two disposal issues.

The PEN.
My local chemist takes mine ( no issues or problems)

The Needles

The chemist does not take these but

My GP will prescibe disposal boxes (Little yellow things) and the COUNCIL will make a special trip to collect it/them (I'm not sure how often they would come)

Seems a bit over the top to me.
