Hi,
my doctor has referred me to a "Lifestyle Change Coach" provided by Changing health. Has anyone else been on this course and whats the verdict. I've kept my bloods low and don't eat half the stuff I used too. I reduced drink drastically. Now only have when on holiday and the odd weekend, I'm curious to know people's views and not the garb they put on the website.

What reason has the GP given for offering this to you? How do you feel about trying it?
To be honest I think it's a bit insulting. I have pains in legs and feet since doctor put me on statins. Metformin is giving me the runs and I've a leaking heart valve. I'd love to see what they recommend. I've just applied for a blue badge as feet and legs are so bad

It's an app and as far as I can see it's all about exercise and weight loss and will probably push NHS dietary guidlines.

hi @bluejeans98

i feel the insult.

but i wonder if it is for a good reason.

i doubt many of us are as honest with the hcp's we see as we could be (i know i'm not, after all the flak others get.)
so maybe they can't 'see' the reasons, which may be the lchf, perhaps, if it's that that you are on.
(b12 comes to mind as does cq10 )

the statins, as @bulkbiker , exceptional posts prove are littered with side effects, perhaps this is one.

I suppose as the effort to help you has been given, perhaps it might be wise to build the relationship based on trust and be honest in how you feel and how YOU manage your diabetes, even i fit's not fully sanctioned by your practice.

Obviously you have to give regard to your other health issues, but for the health coach to fully understand the impact of ALL the medicinal AND diet interactions, you'd have to be open and honest.

I know i sound hypocritical, as i stated i'm not honest with my practice yet.
But i suppose each step (thinking southport practice) begins with just ONE person reporting honestly,
and you MIGHT just get some positive benefits from the meetings/guidance.

Little to lose by listening and reporting back here.

Best of luck with decision and the first meeting.

ooh just spotted @JohnEGreen posting.

its an APP..how depressing.
please dismiss all i said earlier, sadly if it's just an app ..it will have the software written in and NO learning about you just more spouting off as Johns says , about eat more carbs, etc.. sadly.

I threw away the Metformin and Atorvastatin - I got into a really dreadful state taking them for just a few weeks.
I was walking using sticks - incontinent, in a daze most of the time, aches and pains all the time, everything tasted strange, my hair was falling out, I had to crawl up stairs as my joints and muscles simply could not carry me, I needed to be very careful getting into and out of the bath.
When I did the shopping for Christmas twice I decided it was not worth living like that any more, but it was a long time before I felt right again completely - and I had to relearn all my songs - luckily my daughter had encouraged me to write down a lot of them, and I had a fairly complete list of titles, but even now I am remembering more to look for.
There was information recently about statins making diabetes worse.
What was the most galling is realising that all I need to do is control my blood glucose by limiting the carbs I eat and I get normal blood glucose levels, so I had five weeks of torture for no reason other than that is what they do at diagnosis.

Glad I'm not the only one who feels bad taking them. It's a toss up between take the drugs and live longer feeling like **** everyday or don't take the drugs and you might live longer with no aches and pains.

I did find an article on the BMJ open site where age at death and lipid tests had been analyzed - longer life was associated with higher LDLs, not lower - and the numbers were up at almost 70,000 individuals.
Pretty much against medical dogma.
I gave a copy to the nurse at my local GP surgery when I saw her last- she went rather quiet about taking the statins then.

Lower leg pain i would put down to the statins,I've been on several different types, pain goes away for about 6-8 months when they change them then come back, so I've stopped taking them (against medical advise) but I'm 40 something year old women with few other risks and unwilling to live with pain for the next 40+ years (hopefully)

Half way through the app and it's actually been an eye opener. Three ways to look at dieting. LCHF. Mediterranean and low fat. It's also listing good and bad fats etc. Will see what the rest of it goes.

When I read your post, I assumed the 'coach' would be a human being! My GP practice is known in the local area for the poor quality of support for T2 diabetics, so I was stunned to hear of someone being offered more time with a specialist -or so I thought!

4 years after my T2 diagnosis, I'm still on no medication, but my HbA1c has gone up in the last year, and the prospect is looming - and I don't want to go there! So at present I'm dedicating 3-months of paying this way more attention than I have been doing, and trying get my head around just how much change I need to make, not just for a while, but for the rest of my life. In no way is this easy, is it?

I'm using the food diary on myfitnesspal, and would be lost without it. Do you keep a food diary?

Be interested to know what it says good and bad fats are if you could share...
although I have a nasty feeling I can guess...
It says Trans fats are bad as is Omega 6 fats. All others are ok to have including lard and butter. The app approaches diet in three ways. LCHF which going off past experience it stays true to what most people know, then the med diet and low calorie or fasting diet. It explains type 2 diabetes as body fat intolerance. Saying that each person has a certain level of fat it can tolerate before it affects the ability of insulin to be absorbed or used by the body. Which is why one person can be thin and get type 2 while another can be 20 stone and not. I have my first coaching session on Friday. I will see how that goes.

I sometimes wonder if I am the only one on here who takes statins without any problems. I started taking them before I was diagnosed with diabetes because I have a truly lousy family history of heart disease (mum died 47, brother 57, cousin 47, aunt 59, grandad 60 something), I also have hypertension and before it was controlled on occasion it would go to 200/120. I also have paroxysmal tachycardia -pulse occasionally goes to over 140. So I am thankful to be able to tKe statins and I have never had any side effects. As far as metformin goes, I had side effects from the usual version but was then put on the extended release version which completely solved the problem. I am on a LCHF diet to keep my sugars under control but I am unlikely to be able to ever stop taking meds because my diabetes is steroid induced rather than because of poor diet. It also does not help that I am a wheelchair user because of polio and as a result of post polio syndrome I do not have the energy to do much exercise. Sorry this is so long, I felt I had tu what I needed to say in context.

am also using MyFitnessPal, ap but find its USA based and lot of UK/uropean foods have to be manually entered. on the good side . It enables you to enter individual items, recipes and entire meals. does give a lot of data. but be aware it wont make allowance for you to be eating LCHF and will constantly tell you: Too much fat, Eat more carbs...

Hi @SlimLizzy

MyFitnessPal allows you to change the Setting for the desired % of daily calories coming from each of the three main macronutrients Carbohydrates, Fats and Proteins.

By making the appropriate changes you should be able to set it up to handle LCHF and eliminate the warnings

You can find the relevant sub menu under the "Goals" main menu option.

Regards

Pavlos
