Diabetes-like symptoms, what could it be?

Hi all!

Please give me som input so I can understand what my underlying health issue might be. I've had problems with low blood sugar for 20+ years. If I let more than 3 hours pass without eating, I start feeling nervous, have a hard time thinking straight, and get a headache. Eventually I start shaking and get a cold sweat. But strangely, if I do physical work, like carpentry, I can go on for longer without getting this feeling.

I've always thought that this is the opposite of diabetes. However, when I check my blood glucose values, they are always in the upper range, and one time even slightly above the range, indicating pre-diabetes. This is 12 hr fasting blood glucose, so when taking the blood sample I always feel symptoms of low blood sugar. Now it seems to me that my problem isn't low blood sugar, but instead something related, perhaps insulin sensitivity.

Last few weeks the symptoms have gotten stronger, and I now also have numbness in hands and feet and frequent headaches. If I don't plan my evening meal carefully, I will wake up in the middle of night, all sweaty and with a super strong craving for food. Last few months I've also had some symptoms that are typical for diabetes: low energy, blurry vision, loss of body weight, poor blood circulation, and the need to pee frequently. But I don't have excessive thirst or a dry mouth. My urine doesn't smell sweet.

What could it be? Government healthcare can't figure it out. I've done the typical blood checks, and everything looks normal. I need ideas for more specific things to check for.

Very grateful for suggestions.
Regards,
Bjorn, Sweden

Hi @BjornM,
Welcome to the forum, I believe you need to be referred to a specialist endocrinologist. Your readings seem to be an imbalance in your glucose and insulin levels after food. The symptoms you are suffering could suggest either insulin resistance or hyperinsulinaemia (high levels of insulin), or even both, all of these and more can cause the symptoms.
Hope this helps.

Bjorn, have you had your thyroid and adrenals checked? I'm not suggesting that's what ails you, but either being wonky can lead to the sort of symptoms you describe.

Yes. He doesn't know what's wrong with me. I've done numerous tests.

Hi @BjornM, my son had symptoms that were similar to diabetes, so I told him to get checked out with his GP, it wasn't diabetes, it was very high cholesterol !!

Well, I’ve lived with frequent low sugar condition for many years leading up to type 1 diagnosis (adult onset). Gradually failing pancreas can apparently produce too much insulin sometime and cause hypo. I too always thought this was opposite of having diabetes. I hope you don’t have diabetes but for your info just in case. It could be reactive hypoglycaemia?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

Lamont D: Yea, I have suspected insulin resistance. Will study this.

DCUKMod: I've checked thyroid, but not adrenals. Will read up on it.

Robinreadbreast: I recently checked cholesterol, and it was fine.

Michita: I've tested for reactive hypoglycemia, and it wasn't the case.

Hi again @BjornM,
As I've found out, there are many types of Hypoglycaemia, not just reactive hypoglycaemia. I have read posts on the RH forum that has the same symptoms.
Not RH, but Hypoglycaemia.
Until you have the tests, you just don't know, there are many conditions covered by metabolic syndrome, it may be one of those!

Best wishes

Thanks Lamont D!

I need to study all the variations of hypoglycemia.
