Hi, everybody, I have just joined here and was have been told by gp that I have a corn on my foot and that I should see a chiropodist (?). I was just wondering whether you have to pay to see them or whether its free on NHS because all the things you can buy in the shop to get rid of corns says you can't use it if you have diabetes. TIA.

When I attended a DESMOND course at my local hospital they said that anyone with foot problems could consult the podiatrist who was part of the diabetes team. Whether that includes treatment of corns and if that service is available at other hospitals I don't know, but worth investigating.

@PinkButterfly its definitely worth checking out the podiatry service at your surgery/hospital. If the doctor has recommended you see one they should be able to refer you if you aren’t allowed to self-refer.

I recently had a small foot problem and despite my diabetes being very well controlled I was fast tracked for treatment after self referring (my GP suggested the self referral and mentioning diabetes as the fastest way to get treatment). Service rang and offered me an appointment the next day!

I see the diabetes doctor at my surgery so I've not seen anybody at the hospital for it so I will try and find out what is available as I've had this corn for nearly 2 years and not really had any suggestions from the doctor as to what to do about it and it's getting really painful to walk now.

As part of the package of appointments you should get a foot check, and referral to the NHS podiatry service if needed, plus the diabetic eye check. Also a education course (one day, I said no as they didn't support low carb) or possibly a referral to a dietician.

Until you can get to see a specialist, I can recommend the Compeed Corn Plasters. They are excellent, really sticky and designed to stay on fit days, and take the pressure off the corn. (They don’t have medication/chemical in them so can he used with diabetes).
