Diabetes Nurse Worried I Would Get Bored...

Today I had a review of my last HbA1c result and my diabetic condition. This time it was with a nurse that specialised in diabetes. I was interested to see what she had to say.

She said that I was doing well. I explained how I arrived at blood sugar levels that were normal. She smiled and nodded knowingly when I mentioned my own lchf freindly GP and Dr David Unwin. It turned out she was comfortable with lchf but still seemed to gravitate a bit towards the “balanced diet” that Eatwell comprises. As if she couldn’t let go of Eatwell. She tried to encourage me not to go too low on carbs. It was as if things are changing but slowly, like a thawing of snow and ice in a heavy winter.

I explained what I ate now including full fat dairy produce and we discussed my last cholesterol readings which were spot on. She said that she was worried I would get bored on a limited range of foods. I explained that it was best that way to avoid the onset of diabetic symptoms again. After reviewing my weight losses and drops in blood pressure and corresponding medication she said I could have a 6 monthly HbA1c. I had to ask for that and checked with her that I hadn’t misunderstood or misheard her. And for that I was pleased.

In 2½ years of eating moderate lchf, I have not been bored with what I eat.

As for the limited range of food to eat the "nurse" needs to read up more on it and see what is readily available to eat on lchf.

That's magnanimous of her...

Well I was quite pleased to eek an HbA1c test out of them, considering how difficult it appears to get them here (according to reports).

Aye Tipetoo. I know you have a more varied diet compared to some.

Maybe your nurse thinks you only eat yoghurt, bacon and eggs, basic meats and butter by the block. :D

Congrats on the progress!

Keep up the good work!

From some of the comments I've seen - including on the forum, I feel there's a lot of misconception about what a decent low carb diet entails. :banghead: I've been eating LCHF for over five and a half years, and haven't yet got anywhere near bored! I'm actually eating a better and more varied diet than I was for some time previously.

Well that’s not too far from it.

But...she said her husband was type two. She caught him knocking back 4 slices of toast. She told him off and asked him why the hell he was doing that and he said he was hungry :D

Seemingly he hasn’t latched onto the idea of filling up with fat yet.

I agree. As I keep to under 130 grams of carbs per day, it still gives me scope for variety.

Hungry sounds like a fair reply.... what he ate, not so much :D

Interesting comment about getting bored of food.
If your food is making you bored you are not hungry just wanting to eat for leisure.
I eat pretty much the same stuff daily and if i tuck into meal and think meh, I just wait a couple of hours
and the food does not touch the sides.
I tend to view food as fuel these days. but i do have the odd bit of leisure eating cheese on ryvita or peanuts.

I think when people talk about food regimes being potentially boring (I agree with y'all that LCHF is full of heaps of yummy food), they are thinking, too, about the social aspect of food sharing? That you need to turn down a lot of high carb food options when eating low-carb, and this can be a bore, socially? I don't know - just a thought.

I disagree. I’m a vegetarian who doesn’t eat eggs & I get bored of the limited variety of meals and very bored with trying to get enough fat & protein and as few carbs (mostly from veg) as possible.

I end up getting so bored I virtually stop eating as I have no interest in it.

Eating out is a nightmare & that’s boring

Friends trying to cater for me is hard work do my social life suffers and that’s boring.

I’ll take boring over medication but please don’t make sweeping statements about people only being bored if they’re not actually hungry & are just eating for pleasure

She repeated the phrase at least twice.

I do find my dietary options are narrower now but as I allow myself 100 to 130 grams of carbs per day that helps to give me leeway on a broader based platter. I didn’t really get a chance to develop the consultation further on this point she raised.

Well for my two bits.....

I'd say before I started, I would have agreed fully with her .

Thinking back to those first few posts and reflected in many others members first days. It was all "BUT WHAT CAN I EAT NOW...:arghh: "

Because a high carb diet WAS what WE were used to..... And to have someone come along and torpedo practically your whole years menu.

Think back

... hungry. ?
Have a sandwich

Want a meal out
Curry and rice

Want something quick
Burger n chips

Fancy a treat
Ice cream

Want to be healthy
Eat more fruit
Drink fruit juice

Because that's what WE thought back then.
Well probably most of us.... And that's how others not eating this way probably see it

But I do agree with many other poster.
Plenty for me to eat, now I know what I can eat ( and how to prep it. .:D )

Exhibit A m'lud.
Avocado
Butternut squash
Aubergine

All easy.....ONCE you know how
;)

To be honest, in my world, when someone says, "that'll be boring" they're applying their own value judgements to a scenario.

For example, if I talked to some of my girlfriends about going to a cricket match, they might consider, and state, "you'll find that boring", or "won't you get borde by lunchtime" (or whatever). It's how they feel about it. If I thought it was going to be boring, I wouldn't be going, yet have spent lots of time watching cricket; although the 5 day stuff can be testing (pun very much intended).

Were someone to say that to me about my way of eating, I'd respond I'd be back to talk about it if or when I got bored, but for now it works for me.

Many, many folks are very wedded to their bread, potatoes, pasta, cakes or whatever, and many of us really enjoyed some or all of those things, before coming to terms with the fact that they (all or some) might not be doing them any good.

These days, I can't get too worked up about it.

Being the 'nurse', she probably didn't allow 'fats' in the house, telling him to limit carbs AND still limiting FATS!!! No wonder he could have been hungry ;)
