Today I went to see diabetic nurse to discuss my results after two months of trying to keep control with diet instead of them putting me on insulin.

2 months ago my reading was 114. Now it’s 62. Which I’ve shared with you guys and I’m super chuffed at the figures.

But today, I feel deflated coming out of the drs. She didn’t appear to be impressed by my results. She said I should eat more carbs. Should not be doing LCHF diet.

Said at the moment she won’t put me on insulin. As I still have to reach my goal of 58. She doesn’t believe diabetics should do any fasting regimes. Told me she wants to see me in 3 months.

It makes me not want to go back to them.

I want to say Thankyou to everyone who has given me help and advice on here. Without your support and insight I’d be on insulin now.

Send her round my house. I’ll set her straight.

And well done on your efforts. Keep up the great work and don’t worry, you’ll soon learn to ignore these types of medical experts. They’re not worth stressing over.

The surgery gets paid for your diabetic ‘care’ I’d refuse to go and you can tell the practice manager that under no circumstances will you be seeing that particular person agin and they are to provide you with the appropriate support.

Your nurse may not be impressed with your numbers, but I am, and so will most on this forum. Unfortunately some HCPs have not caught up with modern thinking, and are still sticking to their outdated teaching. Carry on with what you know works. You’re doing great!

If you go on at that rate you are going to be back to normal before many weeks are past.
The nurse seems to be totally at sea when it comes to the treatment of diabetes, and should perhaps be encouraged to find some other calling where she can do less harm.

I'm afraid many "professionals", I'll use the term loosely, are most upset when their dire predictions are proved to be incorrect.
Those pesky patients who manage to do the "impossible" by following the advice of "internet forums" just have to be wrong. That they fail to see the evidence in front of them is sad and could almost be construed as malpractice...

Please carry on being one of those difficult patients.. get your HbA1c down below pre-diabetes levels and show the nurse how wrong they are! We're here to support you even if they can't.

Keep a firm eye on your blood sugar levels and if you start to go too low then eat something..
Otherwise discuss reducing the dose or coming off it all together if you start seeing lower end numbers.. (sub 5 mmol/l maybe)

Today it felt like she was saying that it was only because I’m now on gliclazide that my numbers have gone down!!
I asked about fasting as I have always struggled since I was a child to eat 3 meals a day. She told me it was far too dangerous for a diabetic to fast and especially if you are taking gliclazide.

I really don’t understand why “professionals” that specialise in “diabetes” are so out of date with what actually works. And have results staring them in the face.

Thankyou again to everyone on here for your support as I tread water frantically trying to make sense of this world.

Hi @Smiler69
congratulations..great scores

i'm not on glics, just diet and metformin
so can't really say about the fasting impact.

just seems such a criminal shame we can't talk openly to those supposed to be there
to help us and get Good, Honest advice in return.

Have to wonder how many of 'those' type of hcp, would choose the higher carbs,
higher meds then complications route, for themselves or their children,
they all seem to love thrusting upon us so much

Well I think @kokhongw's award is much more impressive and far more fun than the gold star I was about to offer, but here it is anyway, in recognition of your impressive results:

Well, first of all, both diabetic meds I was started on said they were to be used in conjunction with diet and exercise. ( so didn’t you just follow instructions?) Pretty sure all package inserts say that? Second, all meds have to post trial results, at least in the US as part of their application for approval. At most, the most effective reduce A1c by 1.2%, or about 14 mmol/mol. So, no matter how you look at it, 114 to 62 in 2 months ROCKS so yay for you!!

That's a very impressive result in just 2 months. You should be out celebrating it. Although, it sounds like you are.

If what you are doing works, keep doing it. I'd be discussing getting off Gliclaazide if you plan on fasting etc. It does depend on whether or not you want off it, if you want off it then tell them so. You cannot be forced to keep taking it, just as you cannot be forced to take anything. Just be prepared to argue your case, and possibly expect your request to be denied. That's your decision of course.

Your nurse is the last person I'd be taking advice from, although it is an all too often encountered problem. Sounds like you are getting no support and that is part of their job, to support you. Work with you. Unfortunately there are some who like to dictate to patients and be in control of all the decision making. Maybe this is your situation, I've experienced that myself.

At the end of the day you can see with your own two eyes the results you are getting, which are great and also uplifting.

Deflated? Don't be. THEY don't know what they're on about, and what you're doing is working. You're on the right track to being well, celebrate! You deserve it!
