good luck Bob :D - I am pleased to see your HC team supporting you with this - I agree the ready made choc one is best - it is the only one I could force down when I tried the slimfast diet many years ago (pre db)- I did lose weight but like many went back to my old ways and put it back on quite quickly

Bob - don't throw out the Caramel shake just yet (that bucket o'Slimfast looks expensive!)

I've found that over the course of a week or so, my tastebuds became more "tolerant" of the really sweet shakes (in my case, it was the Strawberry and the caramel shakes). Maybe caramel just ain't that nice, though? I won't be buying the caramel Optislim again...

800kcal bite

reminds me of a Christmas episode of ER where a guy comes in with severe stomach pains after having had bariatric surgery. When asked what he'd had to eat he said, 'just a smoothie'. Doc asks, 'what was in it?', answer: 'turkey, potatoes, gravy, cabbage, stuffing, sausages...'

What's the carb value of a Slimfast shake? I've been using Atkins Advantage, as it's only 6g (2g net) per shake. I think the Optifast is around 20g!

Optislim is 20g per shake. I DO get a +1hr spike, but my fasting BG's are awesome. Tried it with some protein powder (Choc flavour) one night and had a much reduced +1hr reading....

I think that you need to be a bit careful with your choice of gunk. Optifast and (to a lesser extent) Optislim are supposed to be nutritionally balanced meal replacements.

Most Protein Shakes (that I've seen) come with a warning saying that they should not be used for meal replacement.

I'm not sure if "nutritionally balanced" just means "contains lots of carbs", or if there are lots of carefully calculated minerals and stuff in there too.

It's only in our peverse little low-carb world that 60g of carbs seems like a lot. I found that my pre-meal BG readings were so low on this diet, that I could easily take a 20g spike (only ever got over 7mmol/l two or three times in 3 weeks).

I've been worried about the sugar in these shakes for a while. So I bought some flavoured (milk) Protein Powder from a body building website (99p samples). Mix 'em up with water.

These powders have <2g total carbs per 30g serving, and are much thicker than the Optislim shakes. They don't taste as sweet (god/bad thing depending on taste) either.

I also compared the vit/min content in the Optislim to a normal (believe from Lidl/Aldi) 1-a-day A - Z multivit. The contents were almost identical, with the shakes having aproximately 1/3 of the RDA of each component as compared with the tablet.

So, in theory, you could do 2 (or 3 if you're "a brave/stupid* pioneer") protein powder shakes, and 1 of the 1 a day multivits to do this the lo-carb way. Not too sure I'd like to try this - it's possible that it might make your liver kick out sugar. I'm trying to avoid that.

*Delete as appropriate. <That is NOT an invitation.

Keep it up , Bob. Have you noticed a change in your belly yet? Mine was pretty quick, and definitely noticable.

Don't know how you are making up the powdered shakes bowell but a little tip is use a stick blender if you have one rather than the shaker - makes them really frothy and thicker - I found them more palatable made like this and even more like macydees - just leave out the icecream!

Don't know how you are making up
I get the carer or my wife to shake um up

Think i will try some ice cubes in one tonight

Belly Patch
Yes it does seem to be flatter, very handy when stabbing myself with the catheter.
Dog can see the rabbit now

So far I am not finding it a problem at all ? could be that I am now used to just sitting here doing nothing ,except reading ,PC. TV. Talking to carer ,or any other poor soul that comes in range of my front door :D

I don't use that much energy so knowing my luck put lbs on :?
So far the slim-fast Chocolate .Banana ,Coffee Shakes I really like

We have a Loyds Chemist up the road so I may try a few of your make Optisilm Patch
If your Looking on line there are loads of VLCD on ebay just type VLCD on ebay
Slim-fast Tin seems the best value from looking around £5 for 12 meals

So far i am coming back down within limits 2hr+
i am going to drop one Glit off today see what happens tomorrow

Dist nurse called today taken armful of blood
