Incompetent medical professionals

It would be nice if people did that. Realised they knew ****** all about a specific subject and studied up on it before launching forth with opinion. Unfortunately humanity doesnt work that way.
Worthwhile looking up D-K effect. They were even able to provide a graph that shows least knowledge more confident. But people with high levels of knowledge about a subject were actually less confident in their understanding of that subject.

It doesn't need a social scientist to calibrate a graph. Anyone with any knowledge of a subject needs humility because we realise we know a smaller fraction of much wider spectrum of knowledge.
That's why true science never claims to have the final word, unlike someone who would believe the Myers Briggs!

Sad to see that eye tests and diabetic nurse's have not got any better since I left the UK 25 years ago, it was a real surprise to find the treatment in France was so much better here in France and it seems it still is, I have had insulin pump for the last 18 years libre for the last 2years eye test every year Hb1c every 3months see a diabetic consultant every 6 months normal doctor every 3months, I do not think I would still be alive if I would have stayed in the UK, so I very much hope the UK catches UK with the rest of Europe for treatment of diabetics very soon

Hi, I had an appointment with a new a Doctor. When I entered the Dr's room she started to tell me off. ( I hadn't even sat down).
'Why are you not taking your medication ?' she yelled with raised voice. 'We expect you to take your medication and you should do as we tell you ! ' and she continued yelling at me. I could feel my blood beginning to boil and my BP rising. STOP I said, what medication are you saying I am not taking ? I asked. She said the name of the medication but I had never heard of it before.
I replied that this is all new to me as I haven't been issued with a prescription for such a tablet ! She turned to her computer to see my medications. 'OH' she said I am sorry, I have the wrong patient on screen. Let's take your Blood pressure. You have got to be joking I said and walked out .
This Dr had just been upgrade to be the leading Doctor over 4 other Doctors at the Surgery.

Thank you Peter03.
I am on 2 tablets daily only for a heart condition and no medication for diabetis. My latest A1c is 55 mmol and has begun to reduce. Thanks to the forum and reading some threads I have started a low carb diet and now use a glucose monitor which I purchased. It is helping me to see what I can eat without the glucose reading jumping to silly numbers.

Me: Well, I've noticed I've gotten a lot more short-sighted in the last month.
Optometrist: Mmm... well it's probably taken longer than that.
Me: No but I pay attention to it. It's just been a few weeks.
Optometrist: Do you have diabetes?
Me: No.
Optometrist: <shaking his head> well it must have taken longer and you just didn't notice it.

Two weeks later I was admitted to hospital with a sugar of 42...

Hospital (at diagnosis)
<nurse sticks a cannula in my arm>
<I look away and wince>
Nurse (nastily): You'd better get used to it, you're going to have thousands of those!

More hospital (at diagnosis)
Nurse: Could you please wee in here...
Me: Uh.... I'll... try?
Nurse: Well you'd better do it, otherwise we'll have to stick a tube into you.

Psychiatrist
Psychiatrist: Medical conditions?
Me: Type 1 diabetes
Psych: Tsk Tsk you must have eaten too much sugar when you were younger.
Me: No... that's Type 2 diabetes
Psych: No, it's definitely type 1.
Me: No, um...
Psych: Yes it is. I have a niece with type 1 diabetes.
Me: I... I don't think...

There are some people who work in various medical spheres who, I agree, need retraining or involved in some kind of continuing professional development. I would however like to applaud every one who has contributed to helping me understand and deal with my T1. I am indebted

I don't know where to start with this post @mentat, with a complete stranger telling you he knows more about YOUR condition when he's not even a diabetes Specialist or telling us that 'type 2s' are diabetic because they ate too much sugar as a kid! Please tell me he was joking? Imagine him trying to help a person with a psychiatric condition.

You're right Sue, we tend to remember the daft ones but the majority do the best they can to help us.

I tend to find those who ask and advise are far more use than those who tell and instruct.
If you ever need a sensible conversation about type 1 diabetes then talk to a type 1 diabetic.
