Interesting Times!

Hello,

I've been lurking for a couple of weeks so figured I'd join since I've gleaned much insight from you all. Here's whats been happening to me for the last couple of weeks.

I was diagnosed just over two weeks ago after a phone call to attend the gp asap.

The sit down was pretty good, I have diabetes and there is some confusion over which type so the conversation goes.

My bloods came back after a routine screen with a HBA1c of 106 .... .... .... Apparently this is bad, really bad!

That Friday evening I was asked to goto the local hospital for more tests and for monitoring. They agreed it was bad hah! However because I had no symptoms and the fact the diabetes specialists had gone home after 4 hours they decided to release me back into the wild with advise to take metaformin immeadiately. I went home and bought Jason Fuengs book and read it back to back in 24 hours. Immeadiately started low carbing to see what would happen, first with a taper.

Saturday morning off I went to the out of hours GP to get said prescription. Started to take them but no dice, as mentioned by so many of you the side effects are interesting if you are into bathroom interior desing :)

That Monday I was back at the GP, had a conversation with her about the side effects and moved to a slow release version which is much better for me. Later in the day I say my diabetic nurse and had an appointment booked with the hospital team later in the week.

Going back to the hospital they did an antibody test and are convinced I'm type 2.

Yesterday I saw the gp again, started on a statin and upped to 1000mg of the SR metaformin.

Over the last two weeks my fasting bloods have gone from 19 down to 9.8 this morning. I think that means low carbing is working (maybe). Although I find about 40-50g carbs works for me. Otherwise I can't function.

After all of the above I think the NHS has really tried pretty hard to help me and moved pretty quickly to figure out whats going on.

Now for the long haul, low carb, more exercise!

I hope you enjoyed this fun journey and bravo to all of you for giving up your hard earned knowledge!

Welcome to the forum, glad you have found it informative.

Just be aware that statins can raise blood glucose, most of us try to avoid them unless we have had a cardiac event.

If you are testing using a blood glucose monitor, download the mySugr app, it's free. Record your food and blood glucose levels it is very informative, highly motivating and after a few days data will give you an estimated hba1c.

Jason Fung has YouTube videos, they are worth watching.

Ask lots of questions, we are here to help.

Hi TrickyStillSticky and welcome!
I’m glad you feel happy with your treatment so far and well done on your improvement in blood sugar levels to date. The only thing I would question is have you got your figures for your cholesterol levels. Drs are all too keen to put all diabetics on Statins regardless of lipid levels. The reason that I mention this is that Statins do sometimes increase blood sugar levels.
And just in case during your ‘lurking’ you didn’t come across it here is a link to our useful info post:

Hi! And welcome to the group. You’ve done a great job so far... and the journey continues.

I too have mostly lurked and learned. Diagnosed in March with an A1C of 6.5 which is 48 in U.K. (just into diabetic range, but still terrifying). Started lc on my own by cutting out all sweets and all breads, cakes, cereals, etc. By late May, had an A1C of 5.6 (38) Since March, have lost 5 stone and continuing. Donated massive amounts of clothes that I can never wear again. Nor should I.

Along the way, I found this wonderful forum filled with amazing people and loads of information.

It’s an interesting journey. Keep up the good work. Get a meter and test strips if you don’t already have one, and eat to the meter.

Thanks all for the advice. I have a GluNEO meter, lancets and strips on a repeat prescription for a while and I didn't know about the statins so will look into that. Maybe thats why I'm back in 10 days to do a review of fast blood glucose?

I'm not sure on my numbers to be honest but am hoping with LCHF they will come down. Next time I'm tested I'll make a note of the types of test and numbers for each and report back.

If you’re in England you should be able to request at your surgery to get on line access to your results :)

Hi TrickyStillSticky,
In the UK most T2s don't get prescription meters and strips unless they are also prescribed Insulin or Gliclazide or similar drug that might induce Hypos. Metformin doesn't do that.

My advice is Low Carb - either by LowCarb HighFat lifestyle or Keto/Paleo/Carnivore etc.
Use those BG meter strips : Before every meal and 2hrs after each meal so you find out which foods to avoid - we are all different, so some can eat (cooked) root veg - where I get a BG spike after eating 3 small pieces of raw carrot!
So test and make notes - then test some more until you have your dietary lifestyle sorted.
After that, just keep on following it and your condition will improve, your Hba1c numbers will et better and you will feel better.

For several members having that T2 diagnosis was one of the best things that has happened to them because for the first time they were able to take control of their own body!

Good Luck (it isn't easy),
Ian

In my area those on Metformin do get a glucose meter and test strips.

Mine (the strips) got removed after ditching Metformin.

@TrickyStillSticky please research statins as they can cause a rise in blood sugar levels. I was diagnosed with a hba1c of 48 which is just diabetic and was prescribed statins because ‘all diabetics should take them’ and I knew no better but within 3 months my hba1c increased to 54. When I came off them due to other side effects my hba1c quickly dropped to non diabetic levels. My GP has now put ‘statin intolerant’ on my notes as we don’t want to risk it happening again.

Hello all!

Thank you all for your replies.

The notes on statins are interesting. I have an appointment with my GP in 10 days time to check that my fbg number are not rising, I imagine this is because of the statins.

All I can say about meters and strips are they are on my repeat script. Before I knew this I did buy some lancets though much to the bemusement of the lady serving in Boots. I think she was rather confused I might want to be proactive ;-)

So I'm good to go. FBG numbers are failing and it will be interesting to see how LCHF works out by the time the next HBA1c comes around in November.

Thank you all for your tips, they are much appreciated
