@jjraak I am sorry that you, and others have been upset by finding out that non-members can access your posts.
I have always found your content to be supportive, and friendly. I hope you will continue to post, and thank you for the reminder that this thread has given about being cautious in what we reveal about ourselves.

@Pipp

a beautiful post, most touched by it.
thank you so much.

been a rocky day, had a few issues lately and this has left me rather unsettled,
but as posted i will retreat and regroup and plan a new strategy.

again it's not the finding the odd posts on here, its the ability of ANYONE to drill down into everything i ever posted in seconds, by simply searching my user name.

but hey ho, it's done ...time for me to regroup my thoughts on this.

once again lovely post, appreciate the kind words.

:)

I always knew that all posts were visible without the need to sign up and this didn't bother me.

What I didn't know was that DCUK shows selected posts from here on their Facebook site. I have always objected to this procedure as I hate Facebook and the Facebook mentality, but it's all done to drum up trade (sorry, of course I meant raise awareness and help others ;))so our feelings aren't taken into account. It's all done 'for the greater good' and the fact that we don't want our posts to be on Facebook is irrelevant. I can't find the original thread that discussed this, but here's a later one.

https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/updates-to-terms-and-conditions.142045/#post-1751431

I never knew that before now, either. I don't like it, but at least now I know. Thank you for posting the link.

I hope you won't leave. Talking of beautiful posts, yours are some of the best I read on this board. You would be a great loss to many if you left.

Not sure that was made clear at first registration

seems a rather an unsecured open world, compared to many others i have been on.

i would ask that it be made clearer.

while i will now be debating the information given out any future posts
(forgive me for noit knowing as i don't do facebook, etc.
can people do this with every forum ?

i do feel for those, of whose posts i have read
who were too terrified to tell work colleagues or friends and family even.

much to ponder.
Everyone is different.
Whatever you decide remember, we need you.
@DCUKMod 's suggestion may work for you or even change it regularly, if hv concerns.
Your right to Privacy at work or establishments where contracts you hv to abide by can be enforced by yourself if you hv worries in the UK.
I'd be very sad to lose you over the policy of clarity and transparency.
You are doing a worthwhile service to other shy diabetics. Or even downtrodden ones. They need you!

Not to sidetrack the thread onto FB, but it is notorious because companies are known to check out the FB pages of job applicants before making hiring decisions. I think that is an appalling invasion of privacy, but I never suspected even headhunters of trolling the Internet for people's private information on other web communities.

That said, I have heard of people being stalked on other boards, but that was because they posted links to their businesses' websites. I have never come across any troll posts here on DCUK, thank heaven.

Something to be aware of is that the web was created specifically as a platform to share information and data, and search engines were created to make it easier to find by maintaining their own indexes of the information retrieved from other sites. Once it's held on their servers it's publicly available and no longer under the absolute control of the originating site.

There are privacy protocols in place to prevent particular areas or pages on a site from being indexed, though these can often be ignored by rogue indexing robots. However as far as I'm aware there's no universal way to prevent any specific word or phrase being indexed and used as a search term via a search engine. Forum software could probably be modified to prevent user name searches via the forum itself, but it still wouldn't stop them being retrieved and indexed by Google and the like.

5.9 this morning which is still OK on the roller coaster of blood sugars.

Really looking forward to today. Finish work at 11.30am and don't start back until 6pm for the evening shift. So shopping, lunch at M&S cafe, hairdressers, coffee and more shopping and more coffee. A perfect day - at least for me. It would be husband's worst nightmare.

Thank you @jjraak You are right. There is absolutely no need for someone who is just lurking to be able to access every single one of an individual's posts. Time for a rethink for me too.

Unfortunately I think there is every need for this to be the case. Firstly, I don't pretend to have a clue how DCUK's business model works, but if the forum were a closed community, we would probably be paying to use it. Secondly, if it were, the information contained within would not be searchable from the wider internet, which defeats its purpose. This is just how things work on the web.

The Facebook thing I think is a little more nuanced and open to opinion, but as far as guests (and robots) being able to search/index the entire contents of the forum, this is entirely normal and to be expected. That said, it's understandable that some folk are surprised, but I advise members to think carefully about who loses if they stop using the forum. For better or worse, it will most certainly continue without them.

I am happy for guests to be able to read the entire forum and select which threads they want to read and if I have posted in those threads then that is fine. What I am not OK with is someone maybe thinking they 'recognise' me from one of the posts and then looking back at every single one of my posts. There is no need for guests to be able to search an individual's posts. Search topics and threads yes, all of a person's posts at a glance. No, that's not right and not necessary.

When I hire someone to redo my bathroom or when I get a referral to a specialist I do a google search for them and check out their fb page, Linked in profiles and anything else I can find. In the case of the bathroom I mainly look for related things and happy/unhappy customers but also if they havent filled their facebook page with racist, sexist or other things I cannot agree with. In the case of the specialist I try to find publications to get a feel of who I might be dealing with.
So I'm not a company, but I definitely do the same when I want to 'hire' someone.

This DCUKMod account goes with the role, so as and when I am no longer in position, someone else will adoopt the account and I will go back to my old, dormant, account, AndBreathe.

If anyone has the fortitude or patience to read the 9450 posts on this account (not all mine, obviously) or the 9600-odd (or whatever) posts on AndBreathe, then they should get out more. I'm just not that interesting!

I honestly, don't think folks are generally that interested. Even when I had my internet stalker, I quickly learned they got bored quickly and actually their stalking activity was all about them, not me.

Should anyone encounter an "internet pest" here or anywhere else, there are processes to deal with it, whether online or in the wider world. On here, obviously use the Report button on any post, PM or profile, clearly citing the reason you are doing so, and appropriate processes can be put in place.

In your wider world, then contact the police who have processes which should kick in.

It has been said that ANYBODY could search the forum, let's not forget we are all, with a few exceptions, ANYBODY. I am actually a 16 year old girl. The exception are those who use their own name or photograph and give away personal details like their birthdate, that seems very unwise.

Personal settings can be used to limit the personal details displayed. For those interested in investigating thouse, the can be found in your account settings.

To examine your account settings in full, please log in via your browser (not the App) and go to your account. The options available to you will be displayed, largely via drop-down menus

I've just gone looking for a notice about DCUK's Facebook presence and I couldn't find any mention of it or alert to it. I did find links to Twitter with an invitation to follow there, but nothing at all about FB. Maybe the FB alert is in the info we got when we joined, if so, it has never bothered me, but just now I thought I would go to the DCUK FB page and I couldn't find a link to it anywhere on here.

Just not sure why any one needs to search ALL MY posts before doing so.?
Get over yourself. You are not an international man of mystery.

Nobody is rushing to search all your posts to see if they can piece together your identity from snippets of information. The internet is not hanging on your every word.

You are tilting at windmills.
:bag:

{I would so love to end that post there but it comes across as hostile, when it is intended to be blunt to get a point across, not confrontational to be mean. @jjraak I get that you feel your trust has been broken/misplaced but that is because you misunderstood something not because this site did anything wrong.

I hope you take your own advice, be a little more guarded but keep posting.}
