Erectile Disfunction

After suffering with really bad ED for 5 years, i eventually managed to broach this subject at the Doctors.

I saw an apprentice, which i thought would be OK as i would probably not see him again.

I have a quite complex history, suffering with Heart Failure & T2, and take a whole host of drugs, including slow acting insulin & Glimepride.

Anyway, the doctor was fine and put me at ease (i am REALLY embarrassed - like i say, 5 years suffering so far). With my medical history he wanted to take advice and promised to telephone me with a plan after the weekend.

That was 6 weeks ago. I saw another doc 2 weeks ago who said it was unacceptable to be not rung back and he assured me he would speak to the first doctor and get things sorted.

As i have still not heard anything, i am getting ready to give the whole thing up.

Is this how ED is normally dealt with ??

Doesn't matter if it's ED or anything, if he's promised to follow it up and get back to you, and hasn't, that's unacceptable. And now compounded by the second one not getting back either, that's very bad. Try and call the second doctor again, and if no joy go to the practice manager.

it seems this is a common way all diabetics are treated. it's not related to ED. ask for a referral to an ED specialist/clinic
if you have googled it, it's a complicated interactive thing with many things to consider but odds are if your BG is in normal range, an injection is the answer after 5 yrs

Hi and welcome @muppet65

The forum is a bit slow at the moment (there’s some maintenance going on) and you’ve posted on a 5 yr old thread, so bear with us if you don’t get many responses.

You might get more people to see your post if you wait a day or so and then start a new thread. :)

In the meantime, I am going to suggest that you make another appointment with your doc.

The way my doc seems to work is that they keep writing prescriptions in the hope that something will work. A different thing each visit. Then when they run out of prescription drugs to try, you finally get the referral you needed in the first place.

If I don’t keep going back and badgering them, they just assume their (1st? 2nd? 5th?) prescription worked, when in fact the odds are you just gave up the will to keep hassling them and assumed you were stuck with the condition for life.

I am as a type 1 diabetic been suffering with ED for about 12 years since I was about 60'ish. Like others Viagra and Cialis nothing really worked and there are lots of side affects such as a stuffy nose. I funded counselling for myself incase that may help but it was a total waste of time. My GP helped me by giving me a prescription for a vacuum pump which despite being a bit of a passion killer in the bedroom did work. If you type in Genesis on the net you will get all the info you need. As I have said you can get this device on prescription. It does work so don't despair. You can also talk directly to the company for advice and you will find them very helpful. I hope this helps you.

One thing I found worked was cutting out alcohol and reducing carbs/sugar in general along with some core strengthening exercises. It's not a quick fix, but for me it's helped a lot. My GP was great and offered me all of the drugs, Cialis was good but the stomach acid I got was awful - especially if I ate fatty foods. So the GP gave me a lower daily dose but I still got acid.

Also for me I found that my libido all but vanished - again getting fitter helped. I do find that when I get a grip on carbs/BG then I get a huge spike in energy generally, I'm more alert mentally and more interested in life. I do think that diabetes affects our mental state, as for me high BG = feeling lethargic a lot of the time, and I hate that.

As Brunneria said, do go back to your GP

I get Viridal on prescription, 4 shots a month (1 a week). It has a very very fine needle which yu inject onto the side of your penis and is virtually painless pricking your finger is more painful. It's extremely impressive and you get a 'diamond-cutter' erection that lasts around an hour (even if you pop to soon LOL), then after-shock erections lasting around 15 minutes for 4-5 hours after.

My only regret is I wasted nearly a decade taking viagra and suffering the side effects.

I initially went to my GP about this, and the Advanced Nurse practitioner took one look at my notes and my blood history and said "That's because you're a diabetic" and couldn't work out why no one in the previous 5 years had flagged that.

Right there and then he started the Diabetic process, and also prescribed me 50mg viagra.

Sorry for going into too much detail, but I don't know how else to explain things

About half of the time I could manage sex, but it often went floppy inside, the other half during foreplay it would go hardish, but by the time we tried penetration it would be floppy.

I find Viagra helps a little, but not like the stories you read would lead you to believe. I've tried the 100mg dose and the 50 mg dose, I've even tried cutting the 50mg in half.

Whichever dose I try has the same effect, I still suffer from the symptoms described above, sometimes having to give up trying as it wont go in (even with lube all over it, just goes too soft), and I still suffer from it going soft once in. The reality for me is that instead of it going soft about 30 seconds after penetration, it's now going soft about 1 min after penetration. In other words both me and my wife do notice a difference, but it's a very small difference, nothing like sex was a few years ago.

I've tried taking it on an almost empty stomach, 30 mins, 1 hr, 1.5 hrs, 2hrs before sex, no difference at all.

The odd thing is, for a few years now I haven't woken up with morning glory, but whenever I use Viagra, whatever the dose, no matter how badly functioning I am during sex, I wake up with a rockish hard erection, 100 times harder than during sex, but by that time wifes been up for 2 hrs, dogs are going mad, and I'm bursting for a wee. I only ever do this the morning after taking it, very weird.

Whether I take 25g or 100g, the side effects are awful for me, slight blurred vision and the most awful headache for hours the following day.

I went back to the doctors and they didn't offer me any alternative, basically said if that wasn't working, in their words "try something like a Penis pump or **** ring"

So for now we are using the viagra a couple of times a week, and I'm putting up with the side effects.

I have written about this before here, but I too suffered with not being able to maintain an erection. This was before I discovered I was T2, but I am lucky in that Viagra works quite well for me, with only minor side effects of blue-y vision and feeling 'stuffed-up' for an hour two afterwards (100mg) . It gets less withime too.

I would encourage anyone not to be put off from asking your GP about it, once you start to talk about it you get a sense of relief when your GP is matter-of-fact about the whole issue. I do now want to try an alternative that may work quicker, as the half hour wait can spoil the moment as it were.

When prescribed I wasn't (known!) to be diabetic and the GP then (he's retired now) wouldn't prescribe an other drug as 'they're for diabetics' !! I will discuss it with my new GP when I see him soon after my latest HBA1C. I find it easier to talk about it now have broken the ice so to speak.

Don't suffer in silence chaps! GP's are well used to this sort of thing.
