Keep getting told by people that I can get rid of Diabetes Type one

A few months ago, I nearly had a full blown argument with a nurse who smugly told me that a cure for type 1 had been discovered in Europe and that it was time the UK caught up and that soon everyone with type 1 would be cured...I tried to remonstrate with him but eventually gave up. He couldn't give me any actual facts or even say which country. I should add he wasn't a DSN and also said Type 1s mustn't ever eat grapes as they had too much sugar in them (I'm talking about 3 grapes...).
I would love to think there will be a cure in my lifetime but I doubt it somehow. It has been good to see the advances that have been made in recent years though.

Wow, I had an HCP nurse check my blood prior to treatment.. I had to be between 4.8 & 14.2? Which I thought was quite generous.. Her meter threw up a 4.6.. On being informed I carried my own treatment, she advised me to eat half the bag of jelly babies & wait an hour.
I told her I'd just have the one & see her in 20 minutes..

If nothing else. At least your guy with the "grapes" knows how to use them as a gentle nudge up during a "proper low," if nothing else is around.. ;)

I live in an area in the U.S. Where marijuana is legal and get tired of ignorant people telling me it will cure type 1. I also have cancer and apparently it cures that too. You can go to dispensaries (pot shops), tell what you have and they will mix up a joint for you to smoke.

Cannabis won't cure anything, but it absolutely definitely helps massively with alleviating the severe pain of peripheral neuropathy. Or so I've read :shifty:

Earth was once also flat

That myth is itself a myth. Even in the middle ages it was common knowledge that the Earth was round. It was also believed that the sun circled the Earth but that is quite a different thing.

As to people who tell you you can get rid of T1D, I wish I could get rid of THEM! Perhaps you should say "you do realise that every time someone says that a fairy dies?" Each time they try again, just say "dead fairy."

I would strengthen that statement to "People shouldn't say something about Type 1 diabetes if ..."
With so much in the media about type 2, most people don't think of type 1 when they talk about diabetes.

People all over the world express opinions on all sorts of things without having a full understanding of the subject. T1 is not alone in being on the receiving end of this. In fact, every health condition known to (wo)man gets it.

In the example you just gave about T2, the media gets it just as wrong, and promotes just as much prejudice and wrong thinking about T2 as they do about T1. In fact, I would be surprised if 90% of the population even realise that there are different types of diabetes.

It would be absolutely lovely if everyone did a full due diligence fact gathering before they opened their mouths (or hit their keyboards) but unfortunately, people are people. And often, the people who complain the loudest about how other people behave are actually doing exactly the same thing themselves, they are just blind to their own ignorance and prejudice.

A lot of people don't know about type 1 ( but, even if they did, it doesn't stop so called know it all's for giving their opinion on it), like many other conditions. I talk openly with people I meet when I am promoting brands in a supermarket, we have great chats about diabetes, I meet lots of type 2's, but not a lot of type 1's, so I can tell them about type 1 diabetes and my history.

Most people I meet seem to think it’s all the same. All caused by sweets and laziness and all requiring insulin as you don’t make any anymore. And many think you need more insulin if you pass out:eek: not very accurate whichever type you are.

The truth is if you do not actually have the condition, whatever it may be. You have no understanding of what it is like to have and live with it, so should not offer up an opinion. My own are Type 1, arthritis and Lichus Planus. Any condition outside of these areas are not for me to comment on. And hopefully no more will come along.

You don’t have to have any type of diabetes in order to understand it. You’re effectively saying that no one who does not have type 1 is able to comment, or share knowledge and opinions of anything to do with type 1 diabetes. I’ll have to remember that one and carry it with me into the many type 2 discussions where everyone is apparently free to comment.

Talk about trying to drive a wedge between two perceived groups

@Jim Lahey .
Regarding type 1 diabetes.
1. Feel free to comment. Your comment isn’t actually first hand experience but nonetheless if you feel it has value then comment on.
2. Feel free to share your knowledge. Knowledge gained from external sources no doubt. How could you possibly have knowledge of how type 1 diabetes affects any individual on a day to day basis.
3. Your opinion. Feel free to offer your opinion. So many people have opinions they lose their value over time.

In regards to sharing ideas, knowledge and information, if it’s not silly information or uneducated responses, I feel it does help someone. My best friend who has fibromyalgia, pcos, apparently partially blocked artery, ibs and allergies, I passed on information from this forum to her. Her doctor was reluctant to offer her statins and I linked the forum post about statins to her, so she can make a very careful decision. Her doctor suggested diet and I linked diet doctor for lchf and keto food ideas to her to try. All of the methods for fibromyalgia hasn’t helped her so I linked the latest study with the use of Metformin to her, even her rheumatologist didn’t know. So she can research it and make an informed decision for both her fibromyalgia and pcos. So what I’m saying is, despite me not having those conditions or experienced it myself, I’ve been able to help someone who is closest to me. It is thanks to everyone here, so we shouldn’t drive the divide between the different types of diabetes. I hope we are all here as one collective group trying to help those who need it, whatever condition it may be.

If we are really picking at people for not understanding at what it is like to live with diabetes. Then we shouldn’t be talking to our diabetes team, my team only has one type 1 diabetes specialist nurse who knows both sides. But they share their knowledge, methods and offer mental health support because they know it is difficult but we know the extent of it. (My consultant, as lovely as he is and who is willing to prescribe the latest medication and treatments. He shares what he knows, but he doesn’t understand the never ending difficulties that I face. But I think what it is important is to not judge someone and that’s what I admire about my team.)

Hi All,

Further posts have been deleted for discussing a deleted post.

Can you see the logic here? (rhetorical question - no need to answer)

If a post is deleted because it contains content that breaches our forum rules, then the same thing will happen to further posts that discuss THAT post, explain what the content was, and generally highlight the deleted content...

I refer everyone to our forum rules,
https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/community-ethos-forum-rules.50278/
particularly C8: Where considered necessary, matters may be discussed via PM.

All mod PM boxes are open to any member who wishes to contact us.

I don't know what it's like, which is why I have never pretended to. However, I don't have to know in order to be able to contribute to discussion. Type 1 diabetics do not have exclusivity rights on the subject of type 1 diabetes. That was the tone in the post I was responding to. That's the last I'll say on the subject as, frankly, this us and them mentality is tiring and isn't in the spirit of the forum community.

@Jim Lahey.
Then perhaps starting your posts with “ this is a ridiculous statement “ may help.
There’s nothing ridiculous about diabetes. Just ridiculous people.

Ladies and gents, if posters take issue with others, then nI suggest those points are taken to PM.

Continuation of this bickering is likely to lead to the thread being closed.

For anyone unsure, the Forum Rules can be found, in full, here: Forum Rules

it would appear that person doesn’t realise that our pancreas no longer works and this why we need to inject insulin! On saying that though, I do know of an operation T1’s can have, although the NHS don’t like doing it, and that is the islet transfer (this appears to kickstart a diabetics pancreas). I have relatives in Canada and they say as soon as someone is diagnosed as T1, they have the islet transfer op?!

I do not think your relatives are correct on that one.
