Anyone else shocked at Paul Hollywoods 'diabetes on a plate' comment when discussing a dessert on tonight's episode of GBBO? I feel like this kind of stuff just reinforces uneducated and frankly stupid ideas and questions about diabetes, for example, 'did you get it cos you eat too much cake?' and my personal favourite, 'if you ate this Mars bar, would you die?'

Perhaps I'm just being an over sensitive type 1, interested to see what others thought.

I cringe when this 'laugh' is made and very old hag. It's like a dad joke but way off base.
He's only making himself look stupid. No one else. @Lotts0

I laughed. I get very steamed up about simplistic and ignorant remarks from people who are meant to be advising me, but I don't care what Paul Hollywood thinks! I was more upset about the diabetic couple on Eat Well For Less who were harangued by the presenters and made to feel guilty about their poor food choices, because they claim to speak with some kind of authority.

I am type 1 but yes I think it is a little oversensitive given that type 2 is somewhat connected to over consumption of Bake Off products (and plenty of other factors before anyone gets riled)! It would be tedious if PH had to state the difference between type 1 and 2 each time he mentions diabetes or if he had to re state the difference between hyper insuliemia and insufficient insulin. He is not on Trust Me \I'm A Doctor and is merely reflecting popular opinion/ignorance.
My personal bugbear is the people who mention 'artery clogging' fry ups etc....as in 'heart attack on a plate'! None of them are presenting on a medical show however and its there we should criticise the orthodox myths that get peddled e.g. the Healthy Wholegrain.

I saw it too and my my daughter's boyfriend also heard it, neither of us said very much, except I said 'ouch'
I would think the show would of had some complaints about that sweeping comment:rolleyes:

Not very good on computers!
I never watch Bake Off, all that food I can’t eat. But that remark does sound very insensitive and downright stupid!

Hypos, rude people, ignorance and grey days.
It was a very irresponsible comment from someone who should know better, lots of kids watch this programme so it will only give the wrong message to kids in school about diabetes, which isn’t fair on type 1 children who already have enough to deal with.

It is very irresponsible and untrue to say it of anyone, whatever their type of diabetes.

in the case of T2s their diabetes isn’t caused by cake or sugar.
It is caused by insulin resistance => hyperinsulinaemia => insulin resistance => increased appetite => food cravings and/or weight gain.

some people develop insulin resistance on less than 50g carbs a day. Other people have insulin resistance on zero carbs a day. Me, for example (due to other health conditions). I defy anyone to declare that is ‘too much cake’.

The people worst harmed by the kind of ignorance shown by this man are the T2s.
They already have enough ignorance directed at them from healthcare professionals, the media and the public.
Every comment like this that is left uncorrected simply makes it harder for them.

I don't watch Bakeoff, but I do sometimes listen to the Kitchen Cabinet on Radio 4. I do get irritated when they refer to food with a lot of butter or cream in it as a 'heart attack on a plate'.

I am not shocked by anything Paul Hollywood may say as I find him a most unprepossessing man and one of my least favorite people on TV.

It may seem trivial but it's a prime example of ignorance and when it comes from someone in the public eye who has influence over the general public (I personally cannot stand him) then it matters. Would anybody make the same flippant 'joke' about any other serious condition?, 'Oh, that's cancer on a plate'. No they wouldn't and yet diabetes for some reason is fair game.

I understand what you're saying. I just thought, why is he making a joke about a chronic illness? Imagine if someone on television l, on a family show made a joke about cancer or HIV, it would be totally unacceptable, so why is it OK to make jokes surrounding diabetes of any type?
So who is allowed to make jokes about chronic and potentially life threatening conditions? Not that it was much of a joke but let's hope the Twitter mob have corrected him for his sugar shaming antics as he is clearly pancreatically privileged and therefore not allowed to say anything.

I checked twitter to see what the fuss was about. There's a lot of people shouting, some of them coming to T1's defence and then adding that he shouldn't be "ignorant", as it's just the T2's who have themselves to blame for being alcoholics and eating too much sugar.

Cringe.

....I really do need to stay off twitter.

it is that level of hypocrisy that is most difficult to watch, isn’t it?

I’m with @NicoleC1971 on this one. It strikes me as little more than a relatively harmless, throwaway comment. Perhaps somewhat ill-advised, but not worth getting upset over. The diabetes specialist nurse who advised me to eat “SOME” sugar, on the other hand...

All-in-all, in the game of diabetes misinformation, I think we have bigger problems than a TV celebrity half-seriously proposing that a plate full of refined carbohydrate might not be the elixir of good health. I don’t expect many to agree, but that is the beauty of opinions
