I do not envy parents of children with diabetes.
I was diagnosed at 20 and 30 years on my mum has never stopped being that little bit extra caring towards me than my non diabetic brothers.
Your children will be checked and monitored for their healths for the rest of their lives, and thats not a bad thing.
They will eat better than all the junk food, sweet eating kids... They can still eat normal foods and treats.
Be proud of yourselves as Parents, as life is so much better for having your worries and concerns over us diabetic children. Your children and you will be so much stronger and better for your managing diabetes.
Its hard, but parents... Honest, you do not have to fear the future... It will still be good for your children.

People that can't listen to other people's opinions.
People that can't say sorry.
I've done injections in my bum for 30 years. Now cannulas. I rotate around each cheek for 4 weeks then swop to the other. No lumps, no bumps, no pain. Consistently know what my levels are because I'm not swopping between legs, arms and tum. Lets face it, its the fattest part of our body and hurrs far less than anywhere else.

Pure soap and a tad of bio oil in past few years and honest, the HCP's cannot believe I have no scar tissue etc...i am lean and muscly so difficulty with any set in my stomach or legs due to occlusions and pain and much higher levels.

Don't worry about using bum, it certainly hasnt done me any harm.

Infact, if you read other postings about scar tissue or bad sites I think you will find the majority of these posts are from people who have used their stomachs...

That's very useful to no ! We used to hav to pin her to the floor to inject her now she will hav to give ya big hig wilst ya inject the bum a mention of any other area and it causes a lot of stress to her! It's still pretty new for her and we didn't want to push her do that's diffemtly good to no! My other concern wit the b is wen she starts to inject hetself won't it b awkward?

Much easier to turn round and put in somewhere in your bum than lifting up a jumper or lowering skirt etc..

I used to do it in restaurants, canteens etc as its only slightly turning round and a slight lowering of clothing. If you get a pump longterm -well nobody knows at all.

Thats really tough going for you to have to pin her down, but personally I find it is much less hassle in my bum and it still looks good at 50, at least thats what I'm told- and proud of it. Honest, you would never know I've had one injection in it let alone 63,000 injections in 30 years.. Slightly less actually as on pump for last 4 years, but you get my gist.
Would take photo, but think it would be banned!!!-lol!!

Yep, my bum in public?? Even though its a gorgeous jlo bum may be a bit too much!!!

My male neighbours yesterday apparently were making sexist comments about it, despite them being 20 years younger than me... So not that bad!! And they have seen it in perfect skin in their jacuzzi!!

Injections will get easier, but a pump is less hassle in many ways because the 'needle' should last 2-3 days.

Our CCG gives all new type 1's the option of pumps now.

There is a facebook group called "Diabetic Mums UK" what I am a member of which is brilliant. A lovely bunch of mums/nana's of t1 kiddies. Always someone to chat to on there & lots of experienced mums on there who have lived with t1 for may years. It is normal to feel this way, join the group it is brilliant support. Also the admin & page creator's daughter has a group on there "type1 teens" what maybe helpful to your son when he is ready. My little girl was diagnosed aged 2.5 very poorly on kid intensive care then high dependency for 6days then home. Take one day at a time it is a lot to take in, over 2yrs now for u & it just slots into our life now not runs it =) x x

As you carb count please don't do any insulin corrections after 2 hours...if you're doing 2 hours tests after a meal BECAUSE the insulin will most likely still be working. Check after 4-5 hours after eating a meal. I learnt this on DAFNE and used to correct after 2 hours but many times went into hypo hours later. Unfortunately DSN didn't say this was wrong and I found out about the 4 hours test after a meal 6 MONTHS ago on the DAFNE course.

My daughters DSN have have given us loads of education and always told us never to give any fast acting insulin within 3 hours of having last fast acting injecton so i would never give after 2 hours!

A bolus for corrections should be tested 5 hours after the correction and by that time the person should be at their target level. If not and too high or low then the correction factor should be changed.

I appreciate info but have to admit to being a little confused. We have guidelines re corrections from my daughters paediatric diabetes specialists which we follow and they work for our 7year old :)

Hi all, only just joined today, my 11 year old son was diagnosed last Tuesday night with T1, who has taken it extremely well, i on the other hand, have not! Everything is only just starting to sink in, a lot of mixed emotions going on atm :/ but am trying to stay as strong and as positive as possible, am trying to encourage him to sign up himself and chat to other kids his age with T1, but his too busy watching a film lol xxx

We have also just returned from a holiday in the USA where our 11 year old son was diagnosed with T1 and spent the last week in hospital out there. A total shock as we just thought it was jet lag and the heat that was affecting him. Had to take him to A&E as we thought it must be heat stroke or something. His blood sugar measured 33 when admitted. They then told us the diagnosis. Now back in the uk and trying to get a good routine going. He had also lost around 8Ib in a week and looked so thin. That upset us the most to see him that thin as we have been starving him. Felt very guilty and was quite upsetting. He has now regained his weight and looks so much healthier.

Just a little unsure on how strict we need to be with meal planning? We do eat healthy meals but do we need to start meaning all of his veg and stuff with cups and scales? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi not sure how old this post is but I noticed no one replied. I know exactly how you feel take everything a day at a time my daughter was diagnosed a day before she turned 6! We spent a week in hospital and that week changed our lives forever! Life outside of the hospital seemed so daunting to me I felt I was with a newborn all over again only a newborn with complications! But now it's part if life! You will adapt! And you will go through a grieving process for your son! And as regards food you will carb count eventually but wait until it all feels ready! Your diabetic teem will help you! Breathe and don't panic! It'll be fine! Hugs to you and your family and Son x
