Hi

I was (and still am) 36 when diagnosed. The dr's in hospital said that was very unusual, but I've read in various places that the max age is 40. (But who knows). :!:

I was just 2 months shy of my 13th birthday. I think that the most likely age is between 11yrs and 13.5 yrs, but obvioulsy many fall outside of that. My MIL was diagnosed with type 1 aged 45, so 40 can't be the max age.

Welcome to the forum Dannii,

I was diagnosed with type 1 aged 11.

Type 1 diabetes is most common in people under the age of 30, although it can develop at any age.

All the best,
timo.

I was 8, with fairly typical symptoms.
An acquantance was about 60 when she got it, after many years on steroids for chest problems so she thought she'd be a slim type 2 caused by steroids. But she's been told she's definitely type 1 and done the DAFNE course which is only for type 1s.

Hi Dannii,

I was 18 when I was diagnosed. I have 2 T1 friends, one of whom was diagnosed aged 36 and another at 42. I don't think there's a cut-off point for either T1 or T2 to be honest.

All the best,

fergus

Anyone can get any sort of diabetes at any age. I did a quick literature search, and I found one paper describing a newly diagnosed T1 who was 94 (this paper claimed that the previous oldest known case was 93). At diagnosis a T1 is typically under 30 (often a lot under 30) and thin, whereas a typical T2 is over 40 and overweight. However, these are stereotypes and there are lots and lots of exceptions. Thin people or young people can still get T2, and old or overweight people can get T1. To make life even more complicated there are also quite a number of other, rarer, forms of diabetes than the usual T1 and T2. This is all good reason to see a specialist if you are in doubt about your diagnosis.

The youngest type 1 I have ever worked with was a kittle boy who was just a couple of months old.

When i worked in the hospital we def had seasonal patterns and I remember one xmas we had 4 kids all age 11 diagnosed the week before xmas - all from the same school - that was very strange.

Hiya,

I was diagnosed Type 1 when I was nine. Was told by the consultant that I shouldn't worry as there would be a cure by the time I was 21 - I'm nearly 27 now

You just have to stay upbeat and get on with it as best you can :)

I was 20 (21 now), my uncle was 12, but I have heard of people being diagnosed in their 40s and 50s so, like people have said, I don't think there is a cut-off age
