I woke up this morning with a bs of 19 and it has gone down to 14 obviously too high still.
However I'm blooming starving and I can't eat yet

Hello @NorfolkNic I find I am more ravenous when my BG levels are running high, it's the fact that you have so little energy whilst running high because the body can't convert the excess glucose in your blood into energy that causes the hunger, I tend to just do low carb when like this, so an omelette or something that doesn't continue to fuel the high BG levels.

Thank you for the advice, I don't have any eggs but have cheese so I will have a small piece of that and hope it starves the hunger off until my bs are lower x

Eating cheese is a good decision, I find fat is more filling than carbs and keeps you fuller for longer too.

Hopefully you know why you went high too ?

Hello @NorfolkNic

It sounds very much like Dawn Phenomenon as this it's a regular occurrence, it's talked about a lot on the forum so there's lots of threads on this. What basal insulin do you take and when do you take it ?

I take Novorarid with meals and then Toujeo at night, 80units.
I really appreciate your help, I really don't know what to do as my diabetic specialist at the hospital are rubbish.

Although I don't need any medication, I thought that I'd just mention that eating breakfast always meant that my blood glucose levels stopped rising - about 10 gm of carbs along with protein and fat.
By not eating you might be prompting your liver to continue to provide glucose to assist in whatever activity needed to get something to eat.

Hi @NorfolkNic I would suggest setting your alarm at 3am first to double check what your BG levels are doing first - 3am is the time at which your BG levels should be at their lowest during the night - if your high at this point then you would rule out DP as it kicks in upon waking. High at this point would indicate your basal needs adjusting.

In regards to DP try avoiding carbs during the evening and do some gentle exercise too, it’s always best to eat upon waking too, even if it’s a small bowl of plain yoghurt, this tends to fend off the dump.

Good morning, thank you all for your help yesterday, I am still very confused as to what to do though ............BS at 3am was 8.6 I took it again when waking up and it was 9.6, went downstairs to make a cuppa and two rivita with butter on, before I had eaten or drunk anything I measured by BS and it had gone up to 11.9.......i had a correction dose at 3 as my meter told me too but why shoot up like this ...........help

Foot on the floor. As soon as you start moving body releases Adrenalin to get you going. I wear a Libre and it is fascinating to see how even a Trip to the toilet in the early hours, precipitates a jump in levels. These drop again when I go back to sleep. In the morning however you keep on going and so levels keep rising. Try taking your insulin before getting out of bed and then relax for 5 minutes. Eat a small amount of carbs such as plain yoghurt and berries for breakfast as this helps to tell the body it isn’t going to be starved and dump yet more glucose into your system. For me some mornings I cannot get a stop on it, so always take a correction dose later.

That sounds great advice, I would love a libre but you have to go through high and hell water to get in in my clinic x

I self funded or two years and managed to keep reducing my HBA1C. So that was one tick for the criteria. The main argument for getting it on the NHS (3 months ago) was the fact that I have erratic levels that require my basal to be adjusted up or down every couple of weeks. The best way to do this was to be able to see it in real time with a Libre or indeed go on a pump. Ironically the Libre was cheaper so would best win for funding. The letter written to secure me this funding was detailed and long. I have a very good hospital team.
You mention hell and high water. They have to stick to the criteria and if you fit you fit. They are not allowed to deny.
Anyway try the in bed injection. What bolus are you on? I was also changed to Fiasp a year ago to try and get a handle on my morning rises.

I would love to be able to self fund but I had to take ill health retirement from work a few years ago. To get a Libra I have to show that I test at least 6-10 times a day for at least 10 weeks and need to see a clinical psychologist.
You would think with all my diabetic related problems I would be a priority for the Libra.......

I will definitely try the breakfast in bed . I am on Toujeo basal insulin, 80units

But - that is normal - your liver is releasing glucose so you can chase down or travel to find breakfast - is isn't something to be concerned about, it's what has happened since before Adam realized he needed trousers.
That is a bit of a sad breakfast - I have had steak or sausages with onion, sweet pepper and mushrooms.

Hi @NorfolkNic As said above it's a dump alright, I avoid carbs in the morning for this reason as they fuel the rising blood glucose levels, I simply have plain Greek yoghurt and keep frozen blueberries in the fridge and have this, fortunately I can manage my morning levels much better now. Getting that quick acting insulin on board as soon as you wake is important though too :)

That is the sort of thing I have been eating over the last three - I used to wear size XXL and now I buy M.
The advice on what to eat to lower weight is wrong - to fatten farmyard animals they feed them on carbohydrate, not fat, not protein - yet we are told that wholegrain is the thing to eat, even at the 'education' session for my type two I was told that a lunch of baked potato and beans was an ideal choice. It isn't.
