A DiabetesUK woman visited the group this morning. Usual rubbish about diet. We have all been doing things wrong. When the woman said that potatoes were OK, I pointed out that all starches turn to sugar I was told I was wrong and there's nothing wrong with eating a fist size portion.

She also told us GP should all give us BG meters and strips and only 2 people said that they had them on prescription

There was a man sitting next to me who used to be a moderator on here but didn't catch his name, he and I were the only slim people in the room.

Next month there is a visit by a dietitian. God help us. I don't know if I could stand the anguish of listening to rubbish again.

Maybe you should get yourself a libra and let the group vote on what food you try, with a reward for the person who predicts the outcomes best for each food item.

I'd have been as almost nearly rude as possible at that fist sized comment.
It would represent about two days 'allowance' of carbs for me.

Carol - Last time, our local Specialist Diabetes Dietitian visited our DUK group, the tide was (re)turning for her, almost back to the "old days" when reduced carbing was the way forward.

We're due to have her visit again, early next year, so it'll be interesting to understand her current direction of travel. Maybe you'll get lucky?

Hi. I'm lucky as my DN recommends keeping the carbs down. So DUK (not this site) still has representatives pushing out the old mantra. I guess it could take many years yet before they admit they have been wrong with diet. I resigned my membership and perhaps others should consider options including contacting DUK to comment on the diet advice.

I was told by a medical professional within the last year that I shouldn't use Avacado Oil as it had 9 carbs per gram :banghead::banghead:

Yes mine does too but says 200g is low carb! I explained I had huge spikes in anything more than 20g pd and she looked blankly and tried to change the subject. I pressed on and she maintained that was low carb and everyone did well on it ........ again pressing for info that “doing well” was with medication and insulin - which is ok unless you desire to be meds free. She then said everyone needs carbs

If I only had a £1 for every person I meet, including medical people, who do not know what a carb is, I would be rich.
Nah, a penny a time would be enough to get rich...

I did a first aid course recently, and the presenter insisted that only sugar pushed glucose levels up! As a T1 I felt I had a bit more credibility than her and my class mates genuinely appreciated the resultant explanation!

What really annoys me is how much of the media, NHS etc treat Calories as a food group and talk about eating so many calories per day. It's a major problem as it causes people to reduce fats instead of carbs to keep calories down which is the wrong approach to control both weight and blood sugar. It also causes the problem in the earlier post that many have no idea about carbs and that they are a food group and not just sugar. EU-based food front of package labelling just adds to the mis-information. The ND is yet another example of calories driving the approach rather than carbs.
