Hi,

I have been T1 Diabetic since 2013, rare for someone of my age group at the time. I will go into greater detail about that in another post, but right now I just want to something that happened to me yesterday. I just still feel so shaken up by it, as it is the worst Hypo I've had in about 4 years. I am pasting this from my Twitter account, to give you the gist of what happened:

"Had an awful, awful hypo in the shops yesterday, tongue bit and bloody as usual. The mad thing is there was an off duty Paramedic and and off duty cop doing their shopping(not together)and came to my aid along with my sister. I am so thankful to those guys.

Also the staff at Hunts Cross Asda who were incredible and let me use a mobility scooter to get back to the car as my legs were jelly, all the while escorted by the paramedic and cop, we must have looked a right picture!!

Also wish I could apologise to the other shoppers who had to witness my turn, my sister said there were a lot of concerned and distress customers, who also came to my aid. At least these horrible situations can help restore some faith in humanity!!"

Thank you for reading, I already feel better for sharing this.

Hello @suedehead83 welcome to the forum :)

Your experience sounds terrible, thank goodness you were able to get assistance.

Did you feel yourself going low at the time ? Thats the same for me - shopping and hypos go hand in hand as there’s a lot going on mentally with decisions and then exercise and being distracted, I can usually feel them coming on so try to find a quiet corner to treat and use glucotabs as I find they work quicker than anything else.

Hope your feeling better today ?

Me and my Sister are going to take some gifts into the store for the staff, they were so kind. They bought a screen out to hide me when I was being treated, bought me food. They were incredible.

I am feeling great now, thank you.

Basically, I was at the till with my sister, felt fine, and then all of a sudden the classic hypo symptoms started. So I ran to the nearest fridge near the till to get an energy drink, thought I could wait it out before opening it before the person in front had been served. Then I come to on the floor with concerned faces around me. And you are spot on, the real bad hypo's I have had have only ever come while shopping(this time of year especially)or at the gym.

Hi. Good that you got the support you needed. I assume you are doing all the right things such as balancing the insulins, testing regularly etc. I do extra testing when driving but have occasionally narrowly missed going too low. BTW it's not that unusual to be diagnosed T1 when not a child. Many of us have been wrongly diagnosed as T2 due to a lack of understanding by the medical profession.

So, any thoughts at to what was responsible?
I'd had a breakfast at a hotel in the morning, and sort of guesstimated the carbs to insulin ratio(to be honest, I've only recently started seriously carb counting)and then racing around shopping.

Did you have quick acting insulin on board at the time then as that sounds like a really fast drop ?

Maybe have a snack before you next go shopping or drop your bolus injection prior if your on a basal/bolus regime ? Food for thought - I always try to take these moments as lessons for the future, have had quite a few hypos out shopping and they are never nice so I try to avoid at all costs now.

Also do you carry glucose with you at all times ?
