Feel light headed if you are over 8mmol?

I do not have diabetes
Hi, I'm still not right and am trying to make progress with all of this, (going to a diabetic club in the new year!!) I was wondering how many of you feel terrible if your sugars go over say 8mmol? I have been trying to stay Carb free, a constant argument with my diabetic clinic -i have been kicked out now or they fail to contact me, is that I need carbs- here we go again or even smart carbs, so i have two thin 5 inch x 2 inch slice of sourdough bread and that's it, and i'm off my head, completely jittery, dizzy, nauseous, and i need to go to sleep or pass out for an hour or two, anything which takes me over 8-10 mmol and i'm physically ill and it is a horrible feeling, i become really ratty and abusive- tourettes at everything and everyone.

I'm wondering if it affects anyone else like this?

Hi, yes, I do!
But I'm not diabetic!
I am in ketosis as much as I can and whenever I go above normal levels, I have the same symptoms..

Mine is because of a weak initial insulin response, so the glucose derived from whatever carbs I have increase my blood sugar levels quicker and higher creating a much higher spike than a normal response should be.

I would be very ill, if I didn't keep control.
Dietary choices are so important if you want to beat diabetes.
It could be your meds, but as with a lot of people, the doctor has prescribed them for a reason, speak to your doctor about the meds, low morning readings and the symptoms you are getting.
A food diary is a useful tool and give you a good knowledge of what happens after meals, especially if you take readings at specific times before and after eating.

I suggested above that @miffli tested for the same effect.

I'm T1, so don't produce any insulin, and my blood sugar has to go quite high (teens) before I notice symptoms, but I used to have a T1 friend who reported symptoms as soon as he got over 8, so some people are sensitive to it. (Note he wouldn't have been on any medication other than insulin, he was very fit.)

When I go to the gym and I feel ill I have to do a blood test because there are 3 likely reasons
1) I'm just exhausted from exercise
2) stress from exercise has pushed my blood sugar high
3) cardio has pushed my blood sugar low.

But @miffli does seem to have been let down by her team. If you're going low carb and still have high levels I've got to ask how confident your team are that you're actually T2 and not another diabetes variant....?

(Edited to add, I usually do 3 blood tests in an hour's gym session, one at the start, one half way through, and one at the end :)).

I can't really say I've ever felt any adverse symptoms after a large rise in my blood sugar.

I'm type 2 and not on any diabetes medication. I have a binge eating problem which is not fully controlled.

For example. My fasting reading this morning was 7.8, which is normal for me. I had a mini binge about 10AM comprising a box of 25 chocolate covered rice crispy clusters, a packet of 4 yum yums and a family sized bag of cheese puffs. My current blood sugar level 1315 is 12.2. This may rise a bit during the rest of the afternoon before falling back to around 6.0 by bedtime.

The thing is I don't feel any different now compared to how I felt before the binge. And if I had a full binge, my level could rise to the high 20s and I still wouldn't feel any different. In fact I'm more likely to feel the effects of overeating than I would from high sugar levels.

OMG, if i ate any of that i would be unconscious for the afternoon- absolutely without fail, i'm on 10.5 now and my breakfast was 2 eggs, some olives and two slices of beef-yuk but it was all that was non carby in the fridge, i even have lactose free milk in beverages.. i just got home and have had a small portion of nuts because i am so hungry.

Hi miffli,
We can't give medical advice in here, but it seems to me that at least some of the symptoms you describe in your other thread are likely to be due to the Empagliflozin/Jardiance. And your current healthcare professionals don't seem to be treating you as a whole person - just one symptom/side-effect at a time
e.g. use of Cranberry Juice to treat the urinary tract problems (probably) caused by Empagliflozin when you are a T2D.
Wikipedia says that empagliflozin only has a moderate effect on Blood Glucose - around a drop of 0.7% in HbA1C. So if it was not for your bad reactions to moderately high BG levels it might have been an easy decision to come off it.

All I can say is that you desperately need a healthcare professional who is open to Low Carb or other dietary means of controlling your T2D. Perhaps other members know of one in Norhtamptonshire for you.

As if 1630, my blood sugar is now 14.4 and I still don't feel any adverse effects.

it was said somewhere about someone having a stir fry which i never usually go near, last night i had one, home made with chicken breast pieces, spring onions, broccoli, red and green peppers, a little mange tout and some bean shoots, literally a dash of soy sauce. some time after i was 10.3 before bed and 11.4 when i woke up with snow white urine i might add. i won't be trying that again. :(

I get woozy on a high-carb hit (word 'hit' chosen especially), and feel something akin to.... high!

I was very surprised by this physical/brain response, maybe a few months post diagnosis, when I couldn't resist an ice-lolly loaded with sugar, the way they are loaded. Now I know that this is normal, to feel so abnormal, if you like - to feel woozy and off my head. My physical response doesn't last that long, and I feel for you re how long your not at all pleasant sensations and response is!

To be honest, I don't know how medical professionals are going to sleep at night with all the studies and evidence out there, not to mention plain old common sense re us and lowering carbs (and raising healthy fat in tandem) - with recommending high carb food to people with blood glucose probs. The fact that carbs are not essential to eat is easily accessible information - can't they look it up online? (And get a hit for this forum first of all - good one!)

Not sure if i'm answering OP original question but yes, i do notice 'symptoms' if i'm higher then normal.
i either feel awful, then test to find it's high (been a while since that happened)
OR i find like you, that i feel a little tipsy and off the wall.

My responses are ...i chat anyway, but when 'high' i chat ..a LOT,,nonstop chatter for a good 30 mins or more.
and the thought process is completely off the wall..funny but also worrying at times, that loss of reality and conformity

then i crash and feel awful.
an apple is almost guaranteed to set me off.

and FULLY agree with how can they sleep at night... knowing that what WE know is SO readily available to read and research.online....:watching:

it's not an just an outrage...it's criminal..

This is so definitely me, completely off the wall and then passing out... I'm shocked and also grateful for your response and every one elses for that matter, now i do not feel so alone but i am also quite angry that the 'professionals' that i have seen have promoted using carbs- that was from Kettering General Hospital diabetes clinic and I hope you're reading this, where she said she was making it her goal this year to get me eating bread and carbs again... (@F"!!!£@ lots of swear words) The same said one that said type II's always end up taking insulin- no flippin wonder. And to Corby diabetic nutritionist team who's out of college specialist who with no disrespect is barely out of nappies looked down upon me because I was NOT going to follow their 'Healthy Diet' which had carbs in it and tried to make me looks stupid into the bargain.

This IS criminal, what are they trying to do, finish me and us all off?

May i say that in another thread i mentioned that taking the Empagliflozin is actually the only medication that has brought my sugars down, i cannot remember the dosage of insulin i was taking every day but it did not lower it to these levels, I realise I have gone back up due to listening to the professionals whom clearly have not clue as to what they are doing. I'm returning to what i was doing when my Hba1c was going down at a fast rate. I do get the thrush symptoms with this medication. Taking this medication and having these symptoms are actually somewhat better than the terrible feelings i get taking the Gliclazide? and the Metformin- at least i don't feel like my hips are a cheese grater and having seizures.

I dun think a little over 8mmol will have any symptoms that can be felt. But over 10mmol may cause frequent urinations.

Well we are all very different and I am just stating what I find and hence why I asked here, others have similar so it must be felt by others too, my step mother regularly used to go to 28 and 30+ and she did not feel a thing, it is all quite bizarre.

Hi Miffli, Ive just registered. therefore a Newbie. Im wondering what the daily fluid intake is recommended to help keep blood glucose levels within normal range.

different people get different symptoms and different levels of awareness.
I don’t think there are any hard and fast rules that apply to everyone.

personally, I get energised at above 8mmol/l (classic sugar high) and floppy and apathetic over 11mmol/l (or thereabouts). I have never had the excess peeing, even at levels well over 15mmol/l for several hours.
Then I get unsafe-to-operate-machinery drowsiness with rapid bg drops, and rip-yer-throat-out-blind-rage at low hypo levels - assuming I didn’t fall asleep when the bg was dropping.

another situation where we are all different.

I'm not sure, i drink an awful lot of spring water anyhow, someone with more knowledge should be able to answer, i know it helps to bring them down if you drink a lot in a short period of time, or at least it works that way on me.
