2 Months in and still no control

Hi everyone :)

First day back at work yesterday- 2 months since Type 1 diagnosis... not going well.

I have suffered with multiple hypos after even a ten minute walk since diagnosed and some days worse than others. Nor.ally a 10 to 1 ratio is fine when doing nothing and 13 units of Glargine every morning.

Today I was at my desk all morning (work in finance) and by lunch 12.20 I suddenly dropped to 4.4 and after I treated it went down further to 3.8 so had to treat again. Even though through the morning o had a couple biscuits. Took some time to come up.

Is this normal while sitting down? Does anyone else have trouble like this- must still be in honeymoon phase?

Absolutely sick of feeling off balance and tired and can't concentrate at work. Possibly try halting my insulin amounts for food tomorrow?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions and help..

You may find starting a new routine will require tweaking your dosages - I presume you are in regular contact with a Diabetes Specialist Nurse (DSN)? Honeymooning can be a nightmare with unexplained lows - if not doing so keep a diary/log of all results, insulin, food, activity etc it will help you and your nurse understand how your diabetes 'works'. And it does get better!

My nurse has signed me over to the dietician to work out ratios which I thought odd .. Don't have to see her any more. I should ring and ask for am appointment? Dietician I'm seeing once per month. They've just said to cut it for exercise but not really helping and every day is different even though I'm writing everything down. I just want the honeymoon to end. Might just try less at work for my breakfast and correct at lunch if high. Only problem Is in worried about being high as have been getting pins and needles in my feet legs and hands x

As you've indicated you're in honeymoon but if you are dropping into hypo just from more walking or possibly anxiety of return to work, it sounds as if your basal (glyargine) could do with dropping by a couple of units on top of the very low carb/insulin ratio you need. It is such a pain to have to keep eating biscuits and/or worrying about when the next low might come along but you will find ways to get used to things and feel able to adjust without a nurse.
I would hope that you are on a list to go on some kind of newbie course e.g. Dafne (dietary advice on carb counting plus lots of peer support) and might also consider freestyle libre testing kit if you are needing to test more than x 8 daily.
Please don't feel bad if you are can#t get the hang of it after 2 months; I can't after 38 years+.

I was on 13 basal but I was getting higher waking readings and 12 seems to work well. I will speak to the team when next in as may need to drop it and take more fast acting to correct in morning?

Yesterday it was high 2 hours after- double figures and today it was way less with same routine. No pattern at all right now..

I have been put forward for DAFNE and Libre but before DAFNE i was told it is best to not be in the hoonymoon phase first.

I might ring and get an appointment with the diabetes nurse tomorrow and will take less Nova Rapid in the meantime.

Thank you for your help. :)

If you're not sure about anything ring your DSN in the first instance.

You're learning that everyday is different, doubly so when in the honeymoon phase:sorry:, and yes doing dafne in that phase is pretty pointless. Has anyone suggested reading 'Think like a pancreas' ? (you can find it on Amazon - well worth it).

Obviously we can't give advice about dosages, but as Nicole has suggested maybe dropping your basal dose a bit may help and then you can always correct highs with a small quick acting correction if needed. At this stage I wouldn't worry too much about hitting (low) double figures for short periods - avoiding the lows is the key (which avoids high rebounds and the rollercoaster ride after). If you're going to make changes to your basal dose remember you need about 3 days for the change to bed in properly.

Hi @Donna1984
Your DSN will be your first point of call on anything diabetes related, don't hesitate to give him/her a call. My dietician is a god send as well, helped me to get a pump and libre.
I have been type 1 for 49 years and still get it totally wrong every now and again....don't beat yourself up about it.

Hi Donna

I don’t have much in the way of suggestions or help and don’t want to takeover your thread but just to let you know that you are not alone.
I was diagnosed 4 months ago and having the same issues as you. I’m not sure why it is called the ‘honeymoon period’ as honeymoons are supposed to be enjoyable . I keep thinking that I’ve cracked it and know what I’m doing only to be back to square one the next day.
All I can say is that each day is a learning experience. We’ll get there (or so I am told). Hugs

As a previous poster recommended read the book THINK LIKE A PANCREAS. It helped me enormously when I was trying to figure things out after diagnose.... it will get better but never perfect.....

Hello I am a type one diabetic I was on injection until 14years ago when I went on the insulin pump until going onto the pump I was never under control. Their is no Wright or wrong way with how you deal with your diabetes each person is an individual and makes their own choices on what to eat and how much to eat.
I can go in the garden and my blood sugar can shoot up to 18 but be sat down and be at 3.5.
My HB used to be up at 98 and now is 52 which is excellent.
I would do some fasting to see what your blood sugar are running through the day and my have to drop your Glyargine slightly down but only slowly. If u also have a fast acting insulin with your meals also they may need to drop.
