Karen, don't want to overload you with information at this stage. There are hundreds of sites on the internet that have low carb recipes. Dietdoctor.com is a favourite. Anything you fancy put keto in the search.

If your husband has a sweet tooth, google fat bombs, something your daughter can help make.

We can point you at hundreds of sites when you're ready.

Pizza, google fat head dough.

Evening everyone. I am the husband of Karenb1410 (the starter of this thread) thank you all so much for the advice. I have been really struggling of late. Frustrated with what I was doing wrong and why I couldn't control my blood sugar levels. I've been struggling mentally and lack of energy and moody at times. Now I know why.
In my meetings with my diabetic nurse I have been telling her the type of things I have been eating and she has never commented on the fact I might well be eating the wrong things.
She has always encouraged eating porridge for breakfast, telling me it is a slow release carb and will help keep me fuller for longer.
After reading the thread this morning I had a fried egg, bacon and a sausage. For lunch I had a cheese and ham omelette. Must admit I felt a lot better later in the day. I did my bloods when I returned home and my reading was 7.1
Just had a bit of salad with mackerel and ham and some cheese. About to take my metformin and I am going to skip my statin.
I've no doubt I'll have a lot of questions to ask and I am sure I will get the right answers from fellow members.
Once again thank you so much for the advice and the encouragement.

Welcome to the forum pb0706. Lovely to hear from you. I am sure your mood will improve as you gain control. When you corrolate your readings with what you have eaten, things start to make sense. Ask as many questions as you want.

@pb0706 you are among kindred spirits here. All of us have been in your shoes at one time or another, and most of us also struggled trying to follow the orthodox advice from the alleged experts. You will only have to read the success stories forum here to get a picture of how much success many of us have had in shunning that advice.

You just took the red pill. Welcome to the rest of your life. Hopefully beating diabetes instead of running from it :smug:

@pb0706 welcome aboard. Glad that you have started on the journey towards a lower Hba1c. You will hopefully find pleasure in food again. In my experience the people on here know more than most surgery nurses and many doctors.

Sounds like you're well on your way, and seeing immediate results to boot! We have a winner! Mind you, with your blood sugars going down to more healthy levels this fast, it may affect your eyesight for a bit. If things get blurry, it's fine though: Your brain is used to compensating for the distortion in your vision (sugar in your eyes and tears muck things up a bit). It has to get used to not doing that anymore. It'll last about two weeks, if it happens at all, so don't run out and get new specs, you're probably fine just getting some 5 bob reading glasses, as it is temporary. Glad you decided to join! It does get better from here on in. And hey, I had two dieticians, "specialised" in T2, who told me to load up on bread, spuds and pasta, anything low fat... They just didn't have a clue. Even when my HbA1c came back drastically improved and in the normal range, they still said my diet was all wrong. *shrug* The proof is in your meter and in how you feel.

It does get better. Loads better.
Enjoy the bacon & eggs, you deserve them. :)

Thanks again for the kind messages and the welcomes.
Only taken the advice from this forum yesterday and already seeing some great results.
Until today my blood readings first thing in a morning were between 10.5 and 12, this morning I was 7.0
Because we haven't yet done our weekly shopping I had the same today at work as I had yesterday. That was a fried egg some bacon and sausage, for lunch I had an omelette with cheese, ham, onions and tomatoes.
Took my readings when I got home and I was 6.3
I feel totally different already. Seem to have more energy, in a good mood and I no longer feel lethargic
Can't believe the difference in such a short period of time
Onwards and upwards

@JoKalsbeek Thank you for your advice and guidance. No affect on my eyes at the moment. But I am already a spectacle wearer, I have been since a child. So I am not expecting to be affected.

Stick with the forum, read the posts, you will pick up lots of information. You might want to check out the low carb forum thread, what have you eaten today.

You may slip up from time to time. Don't beat yourself up, treat it as part of your education. There is no one style fits all. Your diet is unique to you.

I am thrilled to bits for you.

For breakfast it’s either porridge or weetabix. Lunch during the week will be flatbreads with cooked meat and salad plus some fruit and maybe soup. Possibly also some low fat crisps. Tea (dinner! ) we tend to have about 6:30-7:00 and is usually standard protein with a carb and veg. He will sometimes have yogurt and fruit after tea or something else snacky. We tend to go to bed between 9 and 9.30 as we are up shortly after 6 each day

I’ll see if I can get him to join - although not sure he is in the right mental place right now hence my cry for help
sadly most of that would have me ill too.

If your weekly shop has an online service, it might be an idea to check your shopping list against the nutrition. You want to check out the carbs per 100g. It might save you time, in the long run, you won't be hovvering in the aisles being tempted by bad stuff!

Enjoy the new lease of life..it's a lot to take in.
plenty of mistakes, along the way..,

but day by day YOU start filling in the pieces that Make up the JIG-SAW of YOUR T2D diets requirements..

Good luck on the Journey

Hi and welcome @pb0706

I am so happy for you that you have found the forum and that you have already seen such great results. It will be an in treating meeting the next time you meet with your DN and can show such a wonderful difference.

It's interesting to me that in many ways the blood sugars are only part of the equations- moods, energy etc improve- my severe asthma has gone completely (and we have had unprecedented smoky conditions here in Australia).

Congratulations and welcome.
