Hi i was type 2 but on insulin I had been vomiting not able to keep any food down and following doctors advice I had stopped taking apidra meal time insulin so then as I was saying I'd been vomiting I got very dizzy and had to grab my radiator to stop me falling out the window I don't remember what happened for that hour but the ambulance turned up I was already unconscious ànd taking away rushed straight to icu with ketones UK 10 and blood sugar off more than 40 and was told the next 72 hours were critical I had more fluids and put straight on pump having blood tests taking every hour blood gasses were off potassium levels and oxgyen levels so low to be honest with you I was in and out of conscious I don't really know much of what was going on after 72 hrs I was slowly on the mend and been transferred to diabetic ward slowly improving still them trying to get me to eat forcing me to have fortified drinks as was so sick well I was on the mend and they took me off DKA protocol 2 hours later came the crash again ketones shot straight back up again so few days later we up to Sunday now and if levels stay stable ànd insulin holds without the pump maybe discharge so Monday morning and doc rounds and I'm now a type 1 on novorapid 3 times a day Lantus background ozmepic once a week and metformin slow release and my blood sugars and I'm doing better my mobility is getting better it took its.toll and I'm very lucky to be alive and the doctors and nurses took amazing care of me and without them I wouldn't be alive today so my diabetic specialist nurse has me on little and often with the food and trying to balance the insulin as my tummy is still adjusting I can't get my around the fact I'm type 1 now and what this all means I'm so confused low carb and no diets are advised right now so today 5 days after been discharged from hospital from DKA I'm still at risk of a relapse but close monitoring and taking things easy I'm slowly getting stronger thank you all for listening x

Hi. I'm sorry that you've had to go thru all this but at least you are now recovering. Sadly the NHS is not good at understanding that T1 can appear at any age and looking out for the obvious trends and symptoms. After you have settled you will need to adjust the Novorapid dose to suit the amount of carbs in the meal; don't wait for the 'training' course that some are offered as the wait can be many months. By adjusting the insulin with guidance you will find that being on insulin is a nuisance rather than problem. Make sure you tell the DVLA for driving and you need to test within 2 hours of driving and every 2 hours whilst driving; all of this is to avoid a hypo.

Type 2
There have been reports of people with type2 having DKA when admitted with COVID-19. Remember the test for COVID-19 can give false negatives. Clearly having type1 diabetes is also a very likely option.

Hopefully once you are fully recovered and the NHS has recovered from COVID-19 you can get a CPeptrade and antibody tests.

Poor you! 40mM blinking eck, must have been like drinking sand.

But welcome to the type 1 club.
The good thing about type is with planning and dose adjusting, you dont have avoid any foods in particular. Of course we all have our personal goals for weight. Getting older :-/ , or less active, the weight stays on more easily, so i'm try limit my carbs or head to a carb free diet ( in general).
But although the concept of prodding yourself with injections seems a bit alien, you'll probably feel much better on them and they dont hurt, more or less. If i'm high, i really want to bring it down so the injection is welcome.

Ps Lada mentioned about driving rules. I always check before putting the keys in the ignition and carry a bottle full sugar coke in the drivers door pocket under a clean rag, glove box and boot. I've had experience where other people have drank the coke, if in the centre :-/. Also worth planning where you'll stop for a test and blood sugar correction if on long journey. One of worst places to drive must be city centres because your camera'd everywhere and cant even stop for a test without paying a parking fee. Ho hum.
