Apologies if there are older threads that already comment on this, but how do well controlled T1s manage insulin doses to accommodate the gluconeogenesis resulting from protein digestion?

I'm on MDI and trying to get back on the very low carb wagon which means in practice most of my current boluses (novorapid) are aimed at protein intake, not carbs. At present using rough estimate that 50% of protein gms will convert to glucose, so calculating bolus insulin dose to cover 100% carb gm + 50% protein gm.

What do others find works for you?

I'm not IR so use 1/2 unit of insulin for 1 oz (28 grams) protein along Dr Bernstein's guidelines.

When I used to go really high on protein I remember I used to bouls for the carbs as usual and then 3 hours later I was doing 2-4 units of Novo Rapid to cover the protein.

Sounds like my ratio is roughly right, but I will need to work on the timing for protein bolusing.
