Re: i have bad control my hp1ca wat 14

Hi
I know ADHD and Diabetes is not the easiest thing in the world to deal with, but you must try and break it down into small achievable goals. You may be good at doing the same things at same times.if channeled, I'm sure, albeit in a bit of a frenzied haphazard way....you must try and channel this into being productive to getting yourself a good routine....one you can stick to..even if it is all consuming and rigid at first you will find a level. I have worked with people ASD/ADHD.
Try and channel the energy into productive exercise and monitoring of your BG and see if this helps. You do not give any information in your post in what way you are struggling, is it Low, high BG, are you off track with diet..do you not test at all, do you not inject..if anyone is to seriously help you, you need to give more info. I hope you feel you can ,as I know it is not easy having co morbidity which obviously make matters a whole lot worse, but people on here are very understanding and will try their best to help and understand you .

Please look for the help,it is all interlinked...but the help it there if you seek it.

Firstly, don't beat yourself up over the Hb1Ac result, mine has been all over the place since being diagnosed a year ago. It WILL get better. ADHD and Diabetes is a terrible combination for you to have to deal with, and losing your nan has also clearly impacted on the way you feel.

It's great that your specialist seems to understand what the issues are, however, he cannot really deal with the ADHD. If your current doctor isn't helping in this area, then I would suggest changing doctors. It will take a team effort to get you back on track, and this means working with your mum, doctor, and specialist. This may mean looking at controlling your ADHD through drugs. Due to the nature of ADHD, until it is brought under a degree of control, your diabetes can't be controlled as well as it could be. As fallenstar has said, everything needs to be broken down into small achievable goals.

You know what, it sounds like you have a great mum and a great diabetic specialist, but the best thing is that you CAN sort this, not because you have to, but because you WANT to - and that's half the battle won straight away! :D

Start here: bdec-e-learning.com

You need to

1. test on waking, test before food, test before bed
2. write down each BM measurement, each injection amount (including background insulin) and each carb amount eaten - I'm sure someone can come along with a link to something you can download and print off
3. over time, you will learn to work out what to inject based on your BM plus the carbs you're about to eat
4. your HbA1c will come right down

I've oversimplified it but you said you need advice on a routine. That is the routine. Register with the site and start learning. Best of luck and happy reading.

You are not carb counting as it is known among type 1 diabetics. You might well be working out what carbs you're about to eat, but with no blood tests, you have, as you stated, no idea what insulin to give yourself, and in fact, without knowing what you're doing, just knowing the total carb value of your meal is utterly useless information. Hence you are not carb counting as we know it. There's nothing more your nurse will tell you other than what you've heard here, and no, there is no 'better' option for people on a basal-bolus regime. Face it, you're not doing the things you should do to work out what to inject. Your nurse isn't going to follow you around all day every day working it out for you either, and without doing blood tests, you - and she - have absolutely no idea what insulin to give you for the carbs you're about to eat. I'm not sure how come you haven't understood this fact.

What did your nurse have to say?

I've found that in addition to carb counting I've had to make allowances for the exercise I also do. Because of your ADHD affecting your organisational skills, I think that getting to grips with testing your glucose levels and keeping a food diary is going to be your biggest hurdle. To help do these at regular times, you could try setting the alarm on your mobile to go off at mealtimes. At the same time you could write down what you're about to eat (providing that your ADHD doesn't affect your attention span or concentration). If it does, then perhaps your mum could help you out with these. Once you've got a few days worth of readings, your nurse will be in a far better position to talk about adjusting doses. The other great thing about getting your blood sugar lower is that it will IMPROVE your concentration and lessen the frustration you may be feeling.
