Hi only posted once on here so still quit new, I am looking for a bit of advise I posted on here when I first got diagnosed in April, since then took some of the advise I was given on here about lowering my carb intake.

I lowered carbs to 80g a day which is low for me ( bodybuilder for 25 years on 600g carbs a day ). The advise I am seeking is when I was diagnosed in April my hba1c was 95 the finger prick reading at hospital was 19.7 that was 3 months ago recently had another hba1c test result was 91mmol the diabetes eye clinic nurse was a bit concerned it had not come down either diet I am on and medication.
My medication which I have been on for over 3 months now is 2000mg metformin 120mg of Gliclazide slow release. I am still getting reading of high teens mid twenties.

I had a reading of 25.5 yesterday and was thinking of going to A&E I test before food and 2 hours after following the advise on here the carbs I do eat are the same everyday I get the same spike now of only .07 mmol.

Just confused if my diagnosis is correct I’ve still got all the symptoms of diagnoses thirst absolutely no energy I look absolutely terrible lost over 3 stone in a matter of a month as was diagnosed feel absolutely horrible. The good news is I’ve finally got referred to a specialist because my dr is absolutely rubbish just not listening and just wanting to push more meds on me.Also found out from my Dr I had some bloods done in January and I was diabetic or prediabetic then.

Any input would be grateful appreciated.

Regards
Karl

Ps I don’t know what would have done if I’d not found this forum.

You could've reduced your carb intake further, but honestly? Going from 600 grams of carbs to 80? That HbA1c should've been glorious. I think it's a good thing you're going to see an endo. Ask for a C-peptide and GAD test and go from there. Don't let this go. If at any point in time you feel ill, go to A&E.

Quick weight loss and high bg are a good reason to question your diagnosis, please get it looked into.

Echoing Jo, yes, don't hesitate to call 111 to ask for advise, and if you feel sick get yourself to A and E.

Hi Antje77

Thank you for the reply that’s why I’m questioning the gps diagnosis and especially with her saying my bloods where all normal in January so I’ve gone from January to April and turned diabetic which felt to to me like over night with my eyesight going blurry and the dramatic weight loss.

GP's often don't know very much about T1, sometimes they aren't even aware adults develop T1 as often as children.

Agree with the above. If it goes that high again then seek help promptly. You do not want to be a heap on the floor being blue lighted in for life saving treatment (In DKA) whilst waiting weeks or months for an endo appointment

Hi. I hope the two tests do resolve the issue as T1 seems likely. I managed yesterday to get my lovely DN to ask the diabetes clinic for a C-Peptide to be done by the NHS. My previous private ones indicated, as suspected, late onset T1. My nurse did say that knowledge has progressed a lot since my diagnosis 15 years ago when I was declared T2 without any tests. Then it was thought that T1 was only a condition of childhood and only caused by antibodies. It's now known to occur at any age and caused by viruses as well as antibody action.

Hi Daibell

Thank you for the reply I am hoping to hear from the diabetic clinic this week. I am hoping I can get a bit of help from them regarding diagnosis I fell as many people say on this forum we all get pigeon holed certain age weight put them in type 2 box regardless of symptoms most of the time.

My main concern was how quick it as come on and the really fast weight loss, also my bloods all been ok on January then in April I’m diabetic with a hba1c of 95.

Again thanks for the reply and hope you are well.

Hi everybody,

Hope everyone is well just an update of sorts to this post, still waiting to see diabetes consultant, I think unless you have covid you might as well give up.

My bloods are still really erratic still high teens to mid twenty’s bit concerning still, plus I use the my sugr app after the advise on here and it as given me an hestimated hba1c 128.7 that’s an increase of nearly 30 mmol since the 11th June.

Any advise would be great fully welcomed.

Diets is still the same only 80grams of carb high protein and fats.
Still losing weight as well I’ve lost 3 stone now, the medication did slow the weight loss down but I am still losing it unintentionally.

Regards
Karl

Hi Karl - this must be so frustrating for you. Do you have the name of the diabetes consultant? You should be able to contact them/the secretary through the hospital and ask for a more/MOST! urgent appointment. Alternatively you can go to A&E every time your blood sugar is over 20 until you annoy the clinicians enough to expedite.
Are you checking ketones? With levels that high, you really should be and if you have high blood sugar + ketones you need A&E.

Hi Bodewhin,

Managed to track consultant down but to my surprise is secretary is on holiday for 2 weeks , so I got myself of to a&e bloods at hospital was 24.4 nothing to eat since 7 am tested at 3 pm, managed to get a really nice and helpful diabetic nurse give me a basal insulin to start with got to go back tomorrow for c peptide and gad test. Hopefully I will know what type I am for definite on the good side my ketones were only at 0.4 so that was a big relief. Hopefully things are going on the right direction with getting this sorted.

Thank you for your reply.

I am so glad you are getting some help! Well done you for going to A&E as you obviously needed to. Keep safe and don’t worry if the insulin doesn’t bring you down much at first. They will want to titrate it slowly so you don’t hypo and give yourself even more trouble. Hope you are feeling much better in yourself very soon.

After so long being high you will really feel it if you drop down to lower levels too quickly.
I don't need insulin, but having been reading the posts on here far some time just thought I'd mention that.
When I went low carb after being encouraged to eat carbs 'to lower cholesterol' I had a few distinctly wobbly moments - luckily all I needed was a drink of water and a few grapes to stop the brain having a tantrum at being denied the warm sugary bath it was used to.
Well done for getting it sorted, and I hope you are soon feeling a lot better.

Hope you'll get your answers soon. I think you already know what's probably coming, bit it'd also mean getting a handle on this before it gets completely and utterly out of hand. And I'm sorry I didn't see your replies earlier. Then you want to talk to someone, you put an @ in front of their name, so they get a notification you're talking to them. You got a bit lost in the shuffle. ;)

You're headed in the right direction, and getting those tests done will provide more clarity about treatment and whatnot. Hang in there eh!

Thank you Resurgam for the reply for the first time yesterday I actually felt like someone was listening to me and how I felt, instead of my gp just pigeon holing me because my age and weight just wouldn’t listen feel a lot better this morning. Go for my anti-body and gad test today.
