Hi and welcome. First to manage the high BS you need to have a low-carb diet to help gradually reduce any excess weight and BS. The nurse will hopefully prescribe meds such as Metformin but it can be contra-indicated with kidney issues. If you have a had a urine test recently the test results for that and hopefully any recent blood test will list aspects of kidney function that are our of range. Make sure you have online access to your surgery test results so you can look at the detail and discuss that with the nurse. At my review last week I was able on the phone to talk about my results e.g. Albumin level etc. and she said all was OK. There are different ways kidney function can fail and you need to know what the results show. At 60% I would expect you should be referred to the local hospital renal unit. My wife has Stage 5 CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) and the renal unit consultants can do more detailed tests. Can I ask whether you take any drugs for long-term use? It is believed my wife's damage was caused by that.

Ask for copies of the past tests and the current one, that way you can tell for yourself what the levels were and are.

Plus how long have you been type 2? How you ever been tested for being a type 1. An antibody test or a c-peptide test?

Hi to all,

No i have never been tested for c peptide test at all i have asked before if I could be type one which I think i could as I was very premature when born think it does play a part in diabetes somehow.
I asked diabetes nurse yesterday what do i need to do about my test results for kidneys she said nothing at the min
I would rather have a referral.

I thought that sounded strange.

Hi @Sparklebrightisright First of all I agree with @Daibell about bringing your BS down. I started to pass protein in 1973 and yet I kept working kidneys for 40 years. The fact that I had a BS level between 5.6% and 7.2% from 1980 - 2013 played a vital part in their survival. I was also put on hypertensive drugs and since 2000 a low protein diet. Since then the only food I cannot eat is any form of grapefruit! So while you are waiting for medical reassurance and action, you could make your BS level a prime target.
Hope this helps!

If you are eating bread then that could push your blood glucose high. Most type twos don't eat bread or hummus as it is a legume. You are using medication to bring your levels down, but eating foods which push them up.

You have to be careful of too much protein when your kidneys aren't normal. (Unless you are on dialysis) You really need to push for a referral so you can figure out what the best path will be. In this case when something else is going wrong I would be tempted to get tested for being a type 1 also. Because you really need to know the best route to control your Bg levels to help protect your kidneys. Don't just ignore it and wait to get worse and then they pay attention.

I would add keeping your blood pressure under control is equally important. I was in similar situation being diagnosed with stage 4 CKD failure. My high blood pressure and being overweight was the cause of the problem. I would insist that you see a nephrologist they are better equipped to understand the results than a nurse. I understand that this is more than a little bit scary, but if you catch it early it can be resolved.

Best of luck

Dave

Hi Dave '

I havnt been reffered to the hospital at all yet i did ask the receptionist when I phoned up to change my phone number and all she said was they were going by what the nurse said to them which was change my diabetes med and increase my test strips so untill I get to see my gp they won't do anything anytime soon as you can't get an appointment at all it is so silly.

So i suppose I will have to wait i have lost some weight this week since starting new meds and eating heathily but its so very hard when I have a lot of weight to loose i want to loose about 25 to 30 kg last year i got down to 72kg but put it back on due to stress.

So i am going to try even harder this time and hopefully will manage to get to where I want to be.
Thankyou for your message i hope i won't end up on dialysis or new kidney i think the reason for my constant heath problems are from when I was born I only weighed 1lb 13oz at birth and went down to a pound and am still here so their is hope yet.

I would ring the surgery and ask for a gp to ring you, so that you can discuss this in more detail, and ask him/her for a referral to the hospital. You might have to stand your ground, with the receptionist, but as others have said, I would have though you need specialist advice. If you can't get past the receptionist, write a letter personally addressed to the gp you normally see, with a copy to the practice manager.

Having had type 1 diabetes since I was 2, I was put on to high blood pressure medication aged 40 something (can't remember exactly), to protect my kidneys, not because I'd get high blood pressure.[/QUOTE]

Don’t just give up about seeing a specialist!!! You do not want to go the route of getting worse and then they pay attention. You have to live with the results not anyone else. If these things are caught early enough you can change how you are doing.
