Hi all.
I know this is probably unusual but last week I had to have a bowel operation, since then have been in agony with pain in colon and chronic diaorrhea which is typical symptoms after bowel surgery.
However my BG levels have gone wild... was low on day of the 'op' reading only 6 , due to lack of food was starved 48hrs pre-op. [op was done last weds]
Normal BG levels with me are on the high sides, 10.3 morns fasting to 14-19 rest of the day n evenings. High I know despite insulin/victoza therapy!
Since the 'op' am on tramadol pain relief and anaesthetic creams, lotions, potions for my colon etc...
BG's are all over the place swing from normal to mega high, despite not eating much due to post op pain and nausea.
For 2 days I was unable to use/take my insulin and victoza, [was too ill] am wondering is it this - that has knocked me out of synch due to not keeping to treatment and diabetes therapy routine?
Anyone else been in same situation or similar?
As its the first time ever I have been too ill to inject.
Anna.x :D

Hi Anna

Pain that would probably put your BG up. The operation and the fasting before it may be affecting the absorption rate when you do eat. Also if your medication includes steroids, they normally raise your BG. Haven't taken them myself, but I think when oral steroids are taken in the morning it's usual for BG to rise considerably in the late afternoon.

Sorry I don't have any real answers, hopefully someone who's been in a similar situation will be along shortly.

Oh Anna29 - poor you :(

Its probably all due to the after effects of the operation, your body needs to settld down again, bg levels do go wild whenever we have stress, illness, ops, etc

You need to be patient with yourself and hopefully you have others around you to give you a bit of tlc and pampering, and cook you fresh, healthy meals, even if you cannot eat much, perhaps just a bit of good nourishing soup?

Dont hesitate to call your doctors/DN if you have any concerns, this is a time to get things off your chest as we all know that worries affect our health and bg levels on top of it all. This is a time for you when you need reassurance.

A big comforting hug for you (((((Anna29)))))

Anna

I would start taking your levimer again, as this is a background insulin which is helping out your pancreas and really shouldn't be stopped because your not eating... I know that you are T2 so your pancreas with be producing enough insulin to prevent you going into DKA but you still need it to maintain a resonable fasting BG..

As because of your operation it's likely that your BG is raised as the body heals itself, and the flucating will be based around the pancreas catching up every now again, so by starting the levimer again this should help stablise your bg.. Just keep an eye on things with extra BG's as it maybe that you might have to lower the dose slightly..

Hi Anna
Not unusual at all for you BG to be all over the place after surgery, your body will be in a state of shock , you know what was going on but it didn't  ....Elective surgery is a real shock to your body, your hormones will be in fight or flight mode trying to heal you as quickly as possible. Cortisol is released in big amounts to aid inflammation and healing at the wound site this alone will increase blood sugars...also some medications will raise blood sugar.
Try not to worry too much it will settle in a few days, but I think Jopar is right maybe get your Basal back on board as soon as you can..this will help and if you have raises after the bit of food you can manage then I would not worry too much. If you get really high blood sugars when you are back on your full insulin regime then watch out for any wound infections..this is the first intimation with me that there might be a small infection starting if my BG goes up when things have settled.

I'm sure you will be fine though :D Get well soon and happy healing.

Hi all,
Many thanks for your help, advice, thoughts and the lovely hugs too... [needed them!]
Fallenstar your angle was so bang on - I am indeed with inflammation and am sure my body has been releasing huge chunks of cortisol too.
My BG levels are yet erratic , today I also had an fasting HbA1c done , am seeing my DSNon weds at 4pm [had my 'op' last weds] so we will be discussing it all.
Am still very sore and in pain with colon, downing the co-codamols and script meds for my bowel conditions.
It is getting a little bit easier each day thankfully but am not yet painfree , be bliss when it happens!
Have got back on the insulin therapy though, can only do it when my guts settle and stomach relaxes.
My usual routine and therapy times are still haphazard due to the attacks of pain and frequent trips to loo.
Still early days and will settle soon I hope?
Thanks again for all your help, thoughts , advice and the lovely hugs .
Much love, Anna.x :D

Customer helplines that use recorded menus that promise to put me through to the right person but never do - and being ill. Oh, and did I mention customer helplines :)
Anna, sorry to hear of your troubles, sometimes diabetes has to take a back seat while you deal with other stuff.

Wishing you a speedy recovery :D

Hi All.
Just an update, today I saw my DSN was thrilled to hear my HbA1c results in at 7.2% [56] the new number system dont make any sense to me! Far prefer the % .
Bowel pain and spasms still with me, [still knocking down the meds!] awaiting follow up appt from the hospital. Will see specialist then.
My BG levels will eventually settle down hopefully, but for now like sid says, my focus entirely on the diabetes has to be done when am both better and stronger.
My DSN is allowing some flexibility now with the insulin as to keep me " safe " from the dreaded hypo's...
Dont want these on top of everything else!
I can play the insulin according to how much - I intake [food] which isnt much , given the digestive problems I experience.
Yesterday I was sooo tired, today bit brighter. :) It will take time to settle and overcome.
Nice to hear and know my HbA1c is starting to go in the right direction now - DOWN !!! YAY....
Am chuffed with myself... :D :D :D

Hi Anna, glad you're feeling a bit brighter today. As Fallenstar said your HbA1c was just what you needed, heading in the right direction at last, long may it continue! Hopefully your appointment will be soon and you carry on improving.
