Good afternoon,

I have been finding sugar in my 4 year olds wee over the last couple of month more and more over last 2 weeks which is what prompted me to test his glucose ( his half sister is diabetic) I've had highs of up to 17.2 1 and half hour after food . I took him to hospital the other day because he went from 14.5 to 2.2 in an hour . He was 5.3 at the hospital so they wernt concerned until they found sugar in his urine . I've been told to keep checking him but if he goes down just note his numbers . Does anyone go this high without diabetes ?
I'm noticing behavioral changes , he has started drinking alot more . He seems really Ill and wobbly when he is high and low.

I'd suggest you ask for an hba1c test, and also test fasting levels at home with a blood test in the morning, also before food and 2 hours after eating. Blood tests will give a much clearer idea of what's happening. The fact you're finding increasing levels of sugar in his wee, and he's drinking a lot more needs more checks done. You know your child, don't be fobbed off by one dr.

I would book an appointment given the family history and symptoms.
He could have gone high then low after a meal depending on what he ate. Or you could have accidentally tested him with something sweet on his fingers (paramedics did this to me when I was hypo with honey on them!).
Ask for hba1c as well as c peptide and the test for antibodies to see if he is making enough of his own insulin or is producing antibodies which are destroying his beta cells.
When you say that you tested his wee for sugar did you mean ketostix such as you have for your daughter?
With the symptoms you are right to be concerned but it needs diagnosing though if those symptoms get worse you will need to take him to A&E.
Best of luck and I hope you get some reassurance either way.

Remember what a doctor knows is not holy grail. Just because they are not concerned doesn’t mean there’s nothing wrong.

They should just do a simple HbA1c test but there may be something wrong with your glucose meter. It might be the case that he is a type 1 diabetic and his beta cells are under stress from the immune attack so the pancreas may be churning out more insulin than need or less insulin than need at different points of the day.

He had a HBA1C last week and came back 5.3% I didn't expect that to come back abnormal as he has alot of time in range , over the last week or so I am getting more abnormal numbers and they are getting higher. Most of his fasting levels are in range but I have had 7.2 , 8.2 and 9.8 . I've requested antibody test and glucose tolerance test but they just dont seem to think anything is wrong.

Hands definitely clean , and there are a lot of numbers in range which is why I think they are not listening. He is seeing on of his consultants for his other health issues next week so I will mention it and keep a close eye on him. I have dip sticks that check for lots of stuff , hasnt had ketones at all so that's reassuring

The doctor at A&E said hes a bit old to be developing type 1 and his numbers are not consistent so it wont be that . How some doctors quality I do not know. They are so used to people going in when seriously poorly instead of checking before it gets to that stage . I've 2 monitors and I've also done my own and his is in range alot of the time I am aware the monitors are not always accurate but I'm noticing a pattern of certain behaviours when he is low, high and in range

Something like around half of the people who develop type 1 do so after the age of 30...
It really doesn't have anything to do with age. According to Google the peak age of diagnosis is about 14.
I would conclude the doctor at A&E hasn't paid too much attention when the lessons on diabetes were happening.

A Libre sensor would give a detailed 2 week history of what is happening.

You could buy a Libre sensor without prescription and use your phone to report results. You will then be able to take a detailed history of what is happening to the doctor or diabetes clinic.

Have a look at childhood Hypoglycaemia.
Some children go through a stage of having highs and lows, similar to what you are describing.
Most of the time the child will almost certainly grow out of it.

It is a wonder the hospital didn't mention it!

Ok I didn't know that. I will have a look tomorrow thank you
You can download the Libre app. If it is an Android phone, it needs to be NFC enabled (Near Feild Communication), which most modern smartphones are. Otherwise, you will need to get a a Libre reader too.

Well a HbA1c is a 3 month blood sugar review, if your son developed diabetes recently then it might not show since he might’ve been healthy for 2.5 months and only for 0.5 months he developed symptoms. Disease progression is different among people, I had symptoms of T1 diabetes for a year or more and didn’t go to the doctors because I just got used to it, other people go into DKA in a matter of weeks or months which is how they find out. When I went I was still producing some insulin, in fact it was slightly more than what other T1 diabetics make (what my dietitian said).

What I don’t understand is how your son got as low as 2.2mmol/L? Like I use insulin and the lowest I went to is 2.4 mmol/L and I felt really bad, nearly about to die.

Your doctor is absolutely confused. I don’t know how they qualified to be a doctor. Childhood and adolescence is the prime time to develop T1D and apparently there are two peaks: one between 10-14 and the other 17-20.

I'm really puzzled about the numbers I'm getting. He went to 2.1 yesterday, you can tell he is low but he still talks and you wouldn't think he was too low. My step daughter is really really Ill when she drops lower than 3.
I just hope they do all the tests and find out what is going on

If your son has childhood Hypoglycaemia and your daughter has Type one diabetes, then the conditions and symptoms are different, but treat both the same with a quick acting sugary drink.
Just to clarify that Hypoglycaemia of any type needs to be acted upon.
Doctors should do tests to see what is going on.

I would be phoning the doctors to get a referral to a paediatric specialist in Hypoglycaemia.

Have they given you any information yet?

His numbers have been all normal for last 3 days. Well blagging my head. Still not had an appointment through, seeing his consultant for growth hormone test results in 2 weeks so I will bring this up with them since no one seems in a rush to see him about this

Hi,

Not all hypos (or the symptoms) are the same for everyone.
I can still talk. (I can still hold it together to treat too.) Esoteric rubbish is my "specialist subject" when low?
Your 4 year old probably has a vivid imagination.?
Lol, when you're a grown adult. It don't quite cut "it."
