I'm new to this forum but not to diabetes.
I was diagnosed in 2008 as a type 1 but after 3 year's on insulin they decided I was type 2.
I was 50 in July but 2 days before my birthday myself and my 19 year old daughter tested positive for covid 19.
Thankfully both recovered at home.
It wasn't easy seeing the daughter have symptoms, tough as a dad that was!
Being diabetic 106kg prop forward and old wasn't brilliant.
I am due to donate my plasma so hopefully this will help.
I was 133kg so am going in the right direction.
I am a welder by trade, still play rugby union and have been a Special Constable for 25 years.
I am currently undergoing training to go on to the police motorcycles.
Also I am looking to join the bloodbikes as a volunteer.
Just thought I would say hello.
Stay safe. Simon

Hello Simon,

I'm so sorry you went through Covid together, but glad you both got out alright on the other end. https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html <-- that might help a little with the weight and the diabetes, though i don't know what medication you're on. You'd be fine on that diet with metformin, but anything like gliclazide could make you face-plant with a hypo, which isn't good on the road. Or anywhere, really.

Anyway, welcome, and I hope this place'll be of help to you as much as it's been to me these past years. :)
Jo

Hello and Welcome! Thanks for sharing, it is re-assuring to hear that you managed COVID at home, as it is mainly less positive stories we hear from the press and media. Any questions, ask way, everyone is friendly and helpful on here. Take care.

Thanks for all of the replies.
I am an uncle but I look like the character from the Adam's family!
I never furloughed but was very careful, I didn't go into a shop or supermarket for months.
The daughter brought the virus home.
My wife didn't get it even with 2 of us in the same house.
I think the media like to shout out about the negativity not anything positive.

Hello and welcome,

Must have been a bit of a shock to have your diagnosis changed. Are you on any mediation? Are you trying to manage your condition with diet?

It's good that you've both recovered from the virus and were able to manage it at home.

Anyway you have found a great site for people with diabetes. Let us know if you have any questions or share any successes or just vent.

Good luck and welcome.

I am on medication.
I have been on metformin since 2008.
I have been taken off blood pressure tablets which is good.
Losing weight is helping.
I hope me recovering from covid gives other people hope.

Hi there and welcome. Now that's an unusual story, it's normally the other way round. Do you mind telling us how they diagnosed type 1 in the first place and now, 3 years later they have diagnosed type 2? x

In 2008 when firstly diagnosed I had rapid onset.
There was no family history of diabetes.
My doctors said I was a type 1 so started out on insulin.
After roughly 3 years they decided I was a type 2, so off insulin I came.
I've been on metformin since day 1 amongst other medications.

Thanks for replying, did you have any specific tests done that you know of at the time, ie a C Peptide test or antibody test? Sorry for all the questions, I was just wondering what they actually said and why. x

If I remember correctly the only tests I had were obviously blood sugar levels which were 36!
I spent one night in hospital and had daily visits from nurses to check on me.
Within hours of taking insulin my vision returned to normal.
I was told I was close to coma glad I swerved that one!
Having no family history of diabetes I never suspected it.
