My sugars have always been between 9 and 11 so I have recently started lantus however this morning after having the same breakfast I normally do my reading went from 9.3 to 20.1. I have never gone that high before so was wondering if the lantus could be causing it.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Hi Mark - That would have been a bit of a shocker! Did you wash your hands and re-check the reading? I'm wondering if you maybe had something contaminating your fingertip when you tested. It would be unusual for insulin to increase your blood sugar. But that said, I'm not an insulin user myself.

Hi yes I washed my hands and tried it on 2 machine, I also have the libre on at the moment so get a constant reading from that. It is still at 20 now and not really coming down at the minute. I'm currently exercising on the stepper at the moment to try and bring it down lol.

Hi,

Lantus is essentially a long acting basal insulin. In theory it should be dealing with background levels with stuff like liver dumps & wot not.
It's more likely the breakfast as the culprit pushing up the BG?
I use Lantus myself, but I also cover any meals with a fast acting insulin.

Hi. Yes, Lantus is a 24 hour insulin. If you are 3c and possibly have very low insulin output I'm surprised you aren't on the Basal/Bolus regime? Perhaps you do still have some insulin output?

I use a fast acting with meals... the back ground insulin (In my case, Levimir) just won't cover a meal. This sounds like you need to discuss a fast acting one with your doctor and soon. You just can't be hitting highs like that each day.

Dear Mark I sympathise ,,please check with your specialist ,as usual I think it could be either of a few things ,
Your insulin model , your bodily requirement ,has changed ,your insulin could be a cheep type ,your breakfast type may have had additional sugar .Remember that in these times diabetics are at the bottom of the health chain ,government looking to Reduce costs . Good luck ,hope you solve it .
Myself I have been injecting fo 55 years , this year more insulin problems this year than ever befor e
I have developed large lumps ,top of fist side ,at all injection sites ,Fiasp ,quick acting ,now takes up to 2 hours to kick in ,if at all ,resulting in having up to 8 injections per day instead of normal 4 . Plus more .
Spoke to specialist on phone only , told to pay more attention to my dosage / asked if injecting properly .
?
Mark ,I know it’s not much help ,but if we keep talking it may help ,Good luck ,
Wjo
