Can type 2 in remission come back in pregnancy?

Hey so like the title says . Is this possible? And so its type 2 ( which allows me the type 2 acceptable glucose numbers) instead of pending gestational diabetes where they want my fasting glucose at 5.1or less and even as a type 2 in remission it was never that ! So its impossible for me to get it to that and I eat a healthy diet with reduced carbs anyway.

Hi @coleyd , I'm not completely sure what you're asking.
But if your question is if it's possible to get pregnant with higher blood glucose, yes it is!

Higher blood glucose doesn't work to prevent pregnancy or no diabetic ever would get pregnant.

My guess (and I stress that word) is that you should talk to your medical team before pregnancy (or asap when you find out you're pregnant) as they'll probably monitor you as a diabetic throughout (extra folic acid etc). Though you may or may not end up needing insulin they'll want to check you carefully.

And maybe you can score a libre on the NHS :)

Good luck.

No I'm saying i had type 2. Got rid with diet. Back to normal levels. Now I'm pregnant it's back. It cant be gestational diabetes as i have pre existing blood sugar issues ? Which means I have more wider range for testing.

My fasting numbers are above 5.1 but at this they will label gestational diabetes. I dont think I am that. I'm probably type 2 back acting up. My fasting will never be 5.1 even when my hba1c is 38 (last tested at 9 weeks pregnant)

So going on the type 2 thing my fasting would be ok in the 5 to 7 range. Which I'm usually in the 5s or 6s ( hormones in pregnancy have this effect)

I want to stay diet controlled as long as possible. I have more scope for that as a type 2. My question is can it return n act up in pregnancy while pre pregnancy I was in remission for type 2

In trying to get my facts right as I'm needing to call my consultant to chat about it and no midwife had been any help as I am not getting treated as a type 2

I'm pregnant now. 21 weeks.

Congratulations :)

My understanding is that GD and T2 are closely linked (most GDers have some insulin resistance before pregnancy and once you've had GD you'll be at higher risk for T2 in later life).

I am not getting treated as a type 2
So you're getting treated as a non diabetic who might be developing GD?

Honestly, it's not clear to me how much difference there is between T2 and GD as regards pregnancy. GD is just labelled thus because it is (hopefully) confined to pregnancy and occurs for the first time during pregnancy. But and am neither a doctor nor a T2 so I may well be misunderstanding.

Good luck with your consultant.

While the blood glucose range for T2's is higher than the range for people with GD, the range when pregnant is as low for diabetics as for non diabetics.
A pregnant T1 or T2 has as tight a range to aim for as a person with GD. So it doesn't matter what your exact diagnosis is, the aim is to stay as low as possible to give the baby the best possible start.

edit: And of course congratulations on your pregnancy!

Thank you both. It's just according to diabetes.org type 2 in pregnancy should aim for 5-7 fasting and 8.5 2 hours after eating. Which is doable.

I think (and please check this) that you may be confusing fasting blood sugar levels and Hba1c?

Well what it says there is

"Here’s an example of some targets to aim for:
when you wake up and haven’t eaten yet – 5 to 7mmol/l
before meals at other times of the day – 4 to 7mmol/l
90 minutes after meals – 5 to 9mmol/l."

So an FBG of between 5 and 7 would be fine and not much to worry about but as it says "these are examples of what to aim for" not hard and fast rules and that individual targets may vary also to discuss your individual circumstances with your medical team.

I would like to add my congratulations on your pregnancy.

@coleyd - I really think the label is unimportant. I think it makes sense to have a chat with the team helping you through your pregnancy and if necessary, as for specialist input.

In your shoes, I'd be trying to focus on keeping my numbers in a decent place, that on the label I might have to carry for the coming weeks.

If your fasting sugars are considered an issue, the team will have options, I'm sure. If they are not considered an issue, in the bigger picture, it'll be a load off your mind.

Let's face it, we're a bunch of people on t'internet - most of whom have zero experience of pregnancy, never mind the nuances of pregnancy with blood sugar dysregulation out to lay in the background. I'd urge you to talk to your team.
