Hi Everyone!

Was just wondering if there was anyone out there to have a chat and be friends?

I’m 23 and have been Pancreatically challenged since I was 4

Was wondering how people have coped through 2020? I know personally I’ve gone off the rails a bit with my control (Doing blood tests like usual) and hasn’t been a great year in that regards but looking forward to getting back on track in 2021!

Would be interesting to hear other people’s stories

Feel free to reply to this or pop me a message always happy to chat

Hiya Dan
I'm leyla
I hope you've managed to jump back on the band wagon now? It certainly has been a rollercoaster for us all.

I've had type one since I was 4 I'm 31 now.

If anything i found covid gave me the kick up the **** I needed to get my bg back in control. I was an absolute nightmare! (And I'm a nurse! )
the best thing to be done (in my eyes) was to get as healthy as I could, so If I did catch it, I'd at least be giving myself some form of a fighting chance against it (I also have asthma and no thyroid, and work in the hospital - I'm nuts clearly haha)
I've loved lock down in the sense that I couldn't go out and socialise, so it gave me space and time to get this under control.

Its taken me a good couple of weeks but I'm getting there and looking forward to my next hba1c so I can do a celebratory dance

What's your story then

Hi Dan, welcome to the forum.

I’m not exactly young these days but wanted to say Hi anyway. happy to chat anytime

2020 was rough but somehow made it through home schooling, getting covid, diagnosed with T1, keeping my job & keeping up with my studies. Through all the difficulties there’s been lots of good moments too so I focus on the positive.

How was your Christmas & New Year? What are you looking forward to in 2021?

I'm so sorry you had to go through all that

How are you coping with the diabetes? That must of been a shock

Hi dan,

Im 26 & was diagnosed when I was 14. Personally for me lockdown hasn't been an issue, i work from home most of the time anyway so it hasn't been much different. Ive kept on top of my fitness goals, stripped more weight & started to tone up quite nicely. In terms of my bloods they haven't been the best so in November I decided to push my diabetes team into letting me have a pump & it came in the post yesterday.

I start training on the 7th of January so 2021 should be exciting.

Thanks Layla. I’m coping pretty well I think. Got myself informed, bought a libra & learned to carb count as quickly as possible. Brought my levels back down within a month & continue to keep working at it. Next goal is to keep in range & loose all the weight I put back on. I’m lucky I spotted the symptoms before DKA.

I have much respect and admiration for health care professionals during this unbelievable year. Well done on keeping healthy at such an impossible time. I can’t imagine being diagnosed as a child, i know it’s the norm but it would have in many ways been so much harder I think.

Hi Leyla!

Well I’m trying my best to do better this year and so far so good!

I think I’ve definitely struggled not having a usual checkup but I know that is no excuse as they’re always on the end of the phone willing to help. Just need to remind myself to do it

Yeah being healthy is probably good if it came down to it. I have to admit I did start eating a lot healthier in lockdown which is the one plus side to me Just need to crack on with doing more regular fitness and should be all good!

Fingers crossed your Hba1c is good and you can enjoy that dance!

Sounds like you really had it all last year

Glad you’re able to focus on the positives though and still going strong!

How have you found coping with T1?

Christmas and new year was certainly different this year but looking forward to 2021! I’d just love to be able to go on holiday again without having to worry about anything!

What about you?

Hi Maco!

Can imagine it must of been difficult being diagnosed older? Nice work on staying fit during lockdown and that! Did you ever get a trial run on a pump before getting yours? I’ve been on a pump since about 13 and absolutely love it! Which pump did you get in the end?

If you have any questions about being on a pump just ask

Honestly I’ve personally had worse years and I count myself lucky to be in a safe place financially & mentally when so many others are struggling. It’s possible I’m just far too busy with my studies (doing a PhD) & my kids (4) I have no choice but to cope with my diabetes too. Things may be different in a years time if my resolve waxes but at my advanced age (35) I’ve built up a hell of a lot of resilience.

I can honestly say we had a fantastic Christmas & New Year. The kids were a joy to be around most of the time, i accepted my figures would go a bit astray if I ate what I wanted but they’re under control today after hitting some highs last night.

What I miss the most is visiting my wider family. Zoom is good but it will never replace a hug from my Nanna & Mam. Soon though, my Nanna gets her first vaccination dose on Sunday.

What’s your idea of a great holiday? Did you travel much before 2020?

Hi Dan,

Yeah it was really hard to be honest, never really accepted it until my early 20’s but even still it was never under good control. I used to & sort of still do go through phases off testing loads and been really on top of things then the next minute no testing at all and completely guessing what my bloods are from how I feel. I’d say this last year has been one of my best & hopefully it’ll continue with the pump.

I was on a pump a year after being first diagnosed but because of how poor my control was & not staying in contact with the hospital it ended up getting chucked in the draw and not used. I still actually have my old paradigm veo laid around somewhere. From what I’ve seen the infusion sets etc are still inserted the same so it should be simple enough to get the hang of things.

I’ve managed to get funding for the new Medtronic 780G as well as the guardian CGM, been active and been out the house quite a lot I’m hoping the automatic shut off when going low and automatically insulin adjustment when high will give good results.

Which pump are you using?
