Diet drinks - the artificial sweeteners taste vile.
Having to forswear foods I have loved all my life.
Trying to find low carb meals when eating out.
Following on from some discussions about low carbohydrate bread (or similar) products.

I was getting interested in the rolls because they looked very like Lidl rolls.
https://lizza.net/collections/all/products/prebaked-rolls

However I started to do the sums.

The pack is two rolls, each 75 grams.
3 Euros 49 or 1 Euro 75 each.

Shipping is 7 Euros 90.

So 11 Euros 39 for a trial pack.

Free shipping above 35 Euros, so I would need to order 11 packs of rolls to qualify.

That still leaves the rolls at 1 Euro 75 each.
Lidl were IIRC £0.89p

It is only money (!) but I am wondering if it is good value.
I recall saying that I would pay more for the Lidl rolls, just wondering if twice the price is what I had in mind.

Hoping that someone who has bought Lizza products will be along to comment.
Especially someone who used to eat Lidl rolls and has now tried the Lizza rolls.

Hi there

Not very helpful, but pretty sure the Lidl protein rolls were 29p! I’m sure there’s a cottage industry there for someone in Germany/ Ireland / other European countries that still have the Lidl ones.

I have heard good things about the Lizza mug bread, but can’t speak from personal experience.

I think my memory has falsely inflated the price.

THose rolls seem to be a luxury.

First test.

They come sealed in individual pouches.
They look very, very like the Lidl rolls in their general colour, texture and composition (lots of seeds).

I treated the roll as I would have treated a Lidl roll.
That is, run under the tap to moisten then pop in a warm (100 C) oven for a couple of minutes to freshen up.

There is a very different smell from Lidl rolls, but not unpleasant.
Split the roll in two and buttered.
Nibbled a corner and found it quite salty (more than the salted butter).
Made into a cheese sandwich.
Now eating it, and it is, for want of a better description, not unpleasant.
It seems a little more dense than my memory of the Lidl rolls, and certainly takes a lot of chewing.

Overall impression is that it is not unpleasant, and a worthwhile source of bulk to help fill one up.
We shall see what this does to my BG levels.

I like the rolls sliced into 3 or 4 lengthways and toasted. I especially like the burnt bits!
I haven’t had chance to make up any of the breads yet - I’m waiting for room in the freezer so I can slice it up and freeze it straight away. Got some of the toasties and I must say, they’re excellent! Toasted under the grill and topped with cheese- I’m addicted!

Second roll.

This time I split it and put it in the toaster.
This worked well; came out hot and soaked up loads of butter.
I had slices of Feta cheese on top making two open sandwiches.

Mmmmm.........very nice and much nicer than the first attempt with a closed sandwich.
More moist, and much more tasty.

So there are only two downsides:
(1) Price (which is a big one).
(2) Small form factor which limits what you can fit into/onto one. For example the UK roll is big enough to get in two slices of back bacon and a fried egg. More on that in the other thread.

Update:
I bought a mixed selection for my latest order.
Rolls
Toasties
Pizza bases
Bread mix.

So far I have tried the pizza bases.
The instructions are "interesting" as they say to use top and bottom heat in the oven (which neither of our fan ovens has). Possibly reflecting different standard ovens in Germany, but I thought most brands were universal these days.
We are used to cooking real pizza on a baking tray or just on the oven shelf.
The instructions say to cook on baking sheet (a.k.a. greaseproof paper) which I have never tried before.
It worked very well, and I have left overs wrapped in the paper to keep in the fridge.

Results; the pizza was covered in home cooked tomato sauce, grated cheddar, sliced mozzarella, sliced tomato, tinned tuna and some Parmesan flakes.
I cooked for 10 minutes (instructions 8-10 minutes) in the fan oven.
Topping was cooked through and the edges of the base were very dark brown.

The cooked pizza was "acceptable".
That is, it had a lot of good pizza things about it but it wasn't like the real thing.
There is also a strange after taste from the base although it is mainly masked by the flavours of the topping.
It is also OK cold, again with the reservation that there is this after taste which is unusual and probably not unpleasant but may take a bit of getting used to.

Tentative conclusion is that it was an OK experiment but isn't likely to be top of the future eating list.

As a possible aside I am seeing strange things with my BG levels after eating this.
They are stable but higher than expected over night.
I am also tracking this with the Seriously Low Carb rolls.
All a bit of a puzzle.

Update:
the more I eat of these the less enthusiastic I become.
What is left from the above order is still in the freezer and I haven't been motivated to take any of it out.

I've reached the conclusion that if it isn't the slightest bit "moreish" and I can't be motivated to take it out of the freezer then it is not a long term success.

Not a patch on the Lidl rolls, certainly.

Probably a dead end anyway.
I haven't tried to order and from Germany since the end of the Transition Period but ordering from the EU is likely to be fraught or impossible for some time.

Hi I am a big convert to lizza toasties which I split put in the toaster and then top with eg. Egg Mayo, pate, cheese, etc. I find lunch a problem in cold weather in warm salads are great. A toastie is 1.7g carbs so split and topped with something tasty solve a problem for me. I think I will continue ordering toasties though I admit they are expensive but they are very efficient and have a 6 week life.

Has anybody had any luck ordering Lizza? It seems they cannot deliver to my address in the UK. It may be just a glitch or most probably Brexit.

Brexit seems to have caused our small income from repairs to knitting machines to be drastically reduced as there were quite a few sent from the EU. The concept of something travelling to be repaired seems to be beyond the scope of the new regulations.
Maybe I should start to produce bread rolls for those still mourning the Lidl triangles. I have just sent off for some ingredients to experiment with for myself.

Thanks Resurgam. Good luck with your own”Lidl” rolls and let me know how it goes :)
I make my own flaxseed crackers and they are not too bad!
I ordered some of my favourite Italian coffee back in December but have yet to see a delivery date. Seems Brexit has been done but not delivered. Doh.

Me too. It seems UK is not on their list of countries they ship to right now. Very disappointing but thats what people wanted!

For anybody who is interested, this is the reply I received from Lizza.

thanks for your message.
Unfortunately, we have to inform you that we can't deliver to the UK until further notice. This is because customs requirements have changed at short notice due to Brexit. Unfortunately our system cannot handle these requirements but we are working hard to solve the problem. We are deeply sorry that we are not able to deliver to UK at the moment and hope to have more positive news for you soon.

We wish you all the best and with a heavy heart we say goodbye for the moment.

Best regards
Tina

They now have to register to collect UK VAT so that they can send it to the UK.
They also have to pay for this privilege.
I do wonder how many non-UK businesses will even bother.
